BOGOTA AT THE US OPEN OPEN FOR BUSINESS DAY This year, the USTA National Tennis Center will not be available to players wishing to practice before its official “Open for Business Day” on Saturday, August 22nd, starting at 8:00am. Due to the nature of the ongoing construction on-site, the US Open foresees holding firmly to this policy and will not be accommodating the special, early requests for practice time that it has in the past. PREMIER PARTNER ROGER-VASSELIN/STEPANEK D. PAVIC/VENUS 7-5, 6-3 In their first tournament as partners, the Frech/Czech duo show off their doubles experience with a win over the rising Pavic and Venus. This is Roger-Vasselin’s 9th title and Stepanek’s 18th. SCHEDULE: SUNDAY FINAL, FIRST ROUND TO TAKE PLACE OVER TWO DAYS For the 2015 US Open, the men’s singles final will return to its traditional Sunday afternoon timeslot, which will fall on September 13th. The men’s singles semifinals will take place on Friday, September 11th. This new schedule will affect the whole tournament, most importantly the first round schedule. The first round will now take place on Monday and Tuesday (August 31, September 1) instead of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. As such, players who reach the final in Winston-Salem (to be played on Saturday, August 29th) should be ready to compete on Monday or Tuesday, given that a Tuesday start will not be able to be guaranteed. I refer to the ATP Code of Conduct, on-site violations, Best Efforts which in part states: “A player shall use his best efforts during the match when competing in a tournament. Violation of this Section shall subject a player to a fine up to $10,000 for each violation. For the purpose of this rule, the supervisor and/or the chair umpire shall have the authority to penalize a player in accordance with the Point Penalty Schedule.” Players may not use their best efforts (tanking) for various reasons, none of which can be justified. Some of this conduct is hard to confirm while others are obvious. Supervisors have been instructed to alert and inform the chair umpires that a “ZERO TOLERANCE” policy is in effect for any player not using his best efforts or tanking during a match. No prior “soft” warning is to be issued, as soon as it is determined that a player has not used his best efforts then a Code Violation is warranted. This behaviour has become more common at the Challenger level although it can happen at all levels. The credibility of the competition, and your tour, is damaged when players abuse the privilege of competing on the tour and this conduct cannot continue to be tolerated. Mardy Fish recently announced that the US Open will be the last tennis tournament of his career. Before the US Open, Fish will play the events in Atlanta and Cincinnati, partnering Andy Roddick for doubles in Atlanta. Juan Martin del Potro announced last week that he is no longer working with Franco Davin and Martiniano Orazi. Pablo Cuevas had a very interesting decision to make for last week’s competition – due to changes in the schedule around the newer, extended grass court season, he was defending champion for both Bastad and Umag. Cuevas decided to play in Bastad, the site of his first career title. Cuevas was repeating the exact same decision that faced Roberto Bautista Agut, when the Spaniard had to choose between Stuttgart and ‘s-Hertogenbosch, both events for which he was defending champion (thanks again to the grass season schedule shuffle). Bautista Agut did the same as Cuevas, choosing the site of his first-time ATP World Tour trophy and played in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Last week, it was reported that plans for a third stadium at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 event have been submitted and, pending approval of the tournament’s ownership, will go forward with seating for roughly 5,000 fans and an in-stadium tennis history museum. The museum would feature historic tennis memorabilia – focusing on the history of tennis in Southern California and specifically the Indian Wells tournament. Estimates have Stadium Three, after final approval, ready for play in 2017. The USTA last week announced expanded coverage for the US Open and Emirates Airline US Open Series across ESPN television and digital platforms. In an eleven-year deal starting in 2015, over 1,800 hours of live tennis action will be broadcast each year from all US Open Series Events and the US Open across ESPN platforms. Bastad Benoit Paire did not drop a set on his way to the trophy in Bastad, making him the fifth player to win an ATP World Tour title this year without dropping a set. OFFICIAL SUPPLIERS 27 JULY 2015 Earlier this year, Wawrinka won 8-0 sets in a row to take Chennai, Gasquet won 8-0 sets to win Montpellier, Nadal won 7-0 sets to take Buenos Aires while Roger Federer won 10-0 sets to snag Dubai. Tommy Robredo last week, in his 15th appearance in Bastad recorded his 10th quarterfinal and fifth semifinal. He finished the week with a 31-12 career record at the event, the most of the playing field. Last week Alexander Zverev made his second ATP World Tour SF, after advancing to the SF in Hamburg last July. Umag Dominic Thiem became the first Austrian since Thomas Muster in 1995 to reach the final in Umag and then followed Muster’s legacy (three-time winner in 1992-93, 1995) by winning his second career title there. Borna Coric enjoyed a fun activity last week for ATP Uncovered, visiting Istria Gourmet Festival on-site and taking a cooking lesson, whipping together a truffle pasta with assistance from the head chef. Gael Monfils also had a good athletic warmup with pre-tournament activities, deciding to extend a basketball activity from a photoshoot to a 2v2 pickup game with some locals for 15 minutes. Bogota Five players last week in Bogota won their first matches on the ATP World Tour. Four of these five players made good on their ATP World Tour singles main draw debuts: Qualifier Marcelo Demoliner, known for his prowess in doubles, took out Illya Marchenko in straight sets while Alexander Sarkissian, who also qualified and was the NCAA Singles Runner-Up for Pepperdine in 2014, defeated John Millman in straight sets. Two locals also locked in their first match wins on ATP World Tour debuts as Wild Card Daniel Elahi Galan of Bogota defeated Pere Riba while qualifier Alejandro Gomez of Cali, a former standout at the University of Kentucky tennis program, provided the biggest upset of the first round, defeating Marcos Baghdatis in three sets. Not far behind, Adrian Menendez-Maceiras won his first ATP World Tour main draw match (previously 0-5 career in ATP World Tour matches) over local favorite Alejandro Gonzalez.
