The claims that market participants want to make for their products (intermediate and final products) differ. Some might want to make a claim on greenhouse gas emissions, others probably on water consumption or details of biodiversity protection. Such a claim for a product is only possible if the respective information has been gathered and audited at the upstream elements in the chain. In addition, the various sustainability claims become more important for all types of biomass-based products. To satisfy these needs, ISCC system participants can opt for certain ISCC add-ons and extensions. Add-ons are additional modules of ISCC, which can be used on top of the ISCC core-requirements. The use of add-ons leads to a higher sustainability level as further requirements can be added (e.g. biodiversity plan, prohibition of certain chemicals, consumables of a production process). With the use of the ISCC extensions, ISCC can be applied to further biomass-based products (e.g. bioplastics, food, feed). The list of add-ons and extensions can be expanded and ISCC will consider the development of further add-ons and extensions if desired by system participants. The intention of this document is to describe how the system of add-ons and extensions works and how system participants and certification bodies can apply them. 2 Scope The scope of this document is the specification of the application of add-ons with respect to a higher sustainability level and with respect to further biomass-based products. 3 Normative references As a basic principle, all relevant ISCC documents are valid for the scope. The normative references display the documents whose contents are linked and have to be jointly considered. These add-ons can be used by supply chain elements to reach a higher sustainability level and to allow for additional claims for the product that is being sold. If for example at farm level the add-on “Biodiversity Plan” is being chosen, claims regarding these additional requirements can be made at the end of the supply chain. The respective information must be carried through the supply chain. The following add-ons are available within ISCC: Add-ons for agricultural production: • ISCC PLUS 202-01 “Biodiversity Action Plan” • ISCC PLUS 202-02 “Classified Chemicals” • ISCC PLUS 202-0n “Options to add further Requirements for agricultural Production” Add-ons for all elements in the supply chain: • ISCC PLUS 205-02 “Consumables of a Production Process” • ISCC PLUS 205-0n “Options to add further requirements for sustainability properties” A special case exists in terms of GHG emission requirements (ISCC PLUS 205-01). Here, the designation of GHG emissions is mandatory for the biomass production and must be available at the first gathering point. For all other supply chain elements after the biomass production it is not a prerequisite for successful certification to be audited against “GHG Emission Requirements”; however, they can choose it as an add-on. 5 Extensions to further products ISCC is a global standard, which in general covers all kinds of biomass and biomass-based products. For some products there are special ISCC PLUS provisions in place as special requirements or audit procedures are necessary. In addition to ISCC DE and ISCC EU which are widely used for bioenergy production, the following ISCC PLUS extensions are in place: 6 • ISCC PLUS 260-01 Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) • ISCC PLUS 260-02 Bioplastics • ISCC PLUS 260-03 Feed • ISCC PLUS 260-04 Food • ISCC PLUS 260-0n Options to add further extensions Mutual recognition of ISCC certificates ISCC PLUS recognizes ISCC DE and ISCC EU certificates. This facilitates the use of ISCC PLUS add-ons and extensions in the case of an existing ISCC DE or ISCC EU certificate. ISCC PLUS 255 ISCC Add-ons and Extensions 6 of 7 For the respective add-on or extension an additional ISCC PLUS certificate is issued. Please see ISCC 260-01 to 260-0n for extensions and 202-01 to 202-0n and 205-01 to 205-02 for add-ons. 7 Audit of add-ons and extensions 7.1 Initial audit The audit scope for an initial audit (first certification audit) or a re-certification audit depends on what type of add-ons and extensions has been selected during the audit registration process at ISCC in addition to the ISCC PLUS core-elements. This will also determine the scope of the ISCC certificate(s) in the case of a successful audit. Verification requirements of addons and extensions are provided in the respective documents (e.g. for feed within document ISCC PLUS 260-03). 7.2 Re-certification audit If during a regular re-certification audit the scope of the existing ISCC certificate shall be extended, the certification body must be informed about this prior to the re-certification audit. In addition, ISCC must also be informed via a re-registration that includes the respective addons and/or extensions. During the re-certification audit all ISCC PLUS core-requirements plus the chosen add-ons and extensions must be covered. In the case of a successful audit the respective certificate(s) must be issued. 7.3 Add-ons or extensions in between regular certification audits In the case that an entity already has a valid ISCC certificate and wants to apply an ISCC add-on or extension in between the certification and re-certification audit or in between two re-certification audits, the CB must be informed about this request and also ISCC must be informed via a re-registration that includes the respective add-ons and/or extensions. The CB must verify the additional requirements of the add-ons or extensions. The respective certificate(s) must be issued and the existing certificate must be withdrawn, if necessary. In the case of extensions, e.g. an oil mill with a valid ISCC EU certificate wants to claim also sustainable meal then the ISCC PLUS extension “Feed” shall to be chosen. In this case one can build upon the audit that has already been conducted and only the extension of the mass balance to the meal will need to be verified, as the other requirements are equivalent to the requirements of ISCC EU. An additional ISCC PLUS certificate for the meal shall be issued. In the case of an add-on, e.g. for consumables only the additional requirements resulting from the add-on would need to be verified. In both cases (add-on, extension) an additional ISCC PLUS certificate with the relevant claim shall be issued. ISCC PLUS 255 ISCC Add-ons and Extensions 7 of 7
