Pupils respond well to the high standards required of them and understand the need for good behaviour. Although fixed term exclusions are used, the number of pupils falling into this category is low. The working relationships between staff and pupils are very good and reinforced through extra curricular activities such as sporting events, school productions and trips, which are an important aspect of school life. The uniform policy requires pupils to wear a blazer and adhere to the full school uniform. Many of the pupils live in the local villages of Crowthorne and Little Sandhurst and are able to walk to school. However, we have a school bus that brings pupils from the South Bracknell area. Pupils are encouraged to adopt high standards of concern for others and take personal responsibility within the school. Committees operate for each Year and a School Council exists as a forum for pupils’ ideas. ACCOMMODATION The school buildings were erected at various times between 1959 and 2005. There are six permanent buildings, situated in pleasant wooded surroundings. There is a Sports Hall, which is used by the public in the evenings and at weekends, and substantial playing fields. Specialist accommodation is generally good, and every department operates in their own area. A new Business Enterprise Centre was completed in 2005. A new build of a Sixth Form Centre begins in Autumn term of 2007. TEACHING STAFF The staff at Edgbarrow are an experienced team of professional teachers who do everything they can to support the life of the school in terms of high quality teaching in the classroom and support for extra curricular activities. Teachers appointed to the school are expected to make considerable personal contributions to the academic work of their department and to take the opportunity to develop their own personal career. INVESTORS IN PEOPLE As a school we are very proud of achieving and maintaining our Investors in People status. We are committed to the ongoing training and development of all our staff and offer a full and varied in-house training programme. The Performance Management process is firmly established within the school for both teaching and support staff and time is given to support this programme. During the day the school is fortunate enough to make full use of these facilities. The local Scouting organisation has premises on the school site and these are used on a weekly basis by young people from the Crowthorne area. The local authority runs a Youth Centre which is attached to our Sixth Form Centre, and the school is also used each week for Adult Education offering a variety of courses. Therefore, the school site is being used most evenings and enjoys fruitful and long-term links with the Crowthorne community. SPORTS FACILITIES As part of the school site we are fortunate enough to have the Edgbarrow Sports Centre. The pupils, staff and school benefit enormously from these facilities and make full use of them during the day. The artificial pitch is an ideal surface for hockey and tennis, while the sports hall enables badminton and basketball to be taught. The health and fitness room and two squash courts are part of the GCSE and Post 16 options. The school has been awarded the National Sportsmark by Sport England in recognition of our PE curriculum and the wide variety of extra curricular opportunities provided for our students. SPECIALIST SCHOOL STATUS As a school we were awarded Business & Enterprise Specialist Status in September 2004. We currently offer specialist courses in Business Studies at GCSE and in the 6th Form and ‘A’ Level Accountancy. Our plans for the future include Leisure and Tourism as well as more vocational courses in other subjects. All the staff in our Business Studies Department have extensive commercial experience as well as excellent teaching credentials. We also have a dedicated Business and Enterprise manager. LINKS WITH BUSINESS Links with local and National business continue to be very important to us. Many companies supported our bid for specialist status and have continued their links with the school. These links include pupil mentoring, providing work experience placements, involvement in Enterprise days and site visits to name but a few. PRIMARY SCHOOL LIASON We have excellent relationships with our feeder schools and our extra funding has enabled us to send teachers from Edgbarrow to support primary staff and pupils to make the transition from Primary to Secondary much smoother and easier.
