CHESS CLUB
There will be a make-up lesson this Friday, 23rd June at
lunchtime for all students in the Chess Club. This is to
cover the missed lesson due to the recent curriculum day.

2016 YEAR 6 REUNION
Last Thursday the Year 6 Graduating
class of 2016 attended their reunion at
Serpell Primary School. Excitement and
energy filled the room and it was
wonderful to hear all the stories and progress everyone has
made at Secondary School. All the students were
presented with their Alumni badge and were reunited with
their Teachers and friends. The 2016 School Captains did
an amazing job speaking in front of their peers and were
very grateful for the wonderful memories Serpell Primary
had created for them.

CHICKEN POX
There have been more cases of Chicken Pox reported in
the school. An infected person is contagious for 1-2 days
(possibly 5 days) before the onset of the rash and remains
infectious until the blisters form scabs (usually around day
five of the illness). If your child develops a rash please see
your GP. Children with Chicken pox must be excluded from
school until the sores have completely crusted over.

canteen foyer.

PARENT’S ASSOCIATION NEWS
We are delighted to announce that collectively we
exceeded our target for the biggest fundraising event on the
year. A profit of $10,000 was made through this year’s
School Raffle! This equates to more than 400 raffle books
being sold.
Our huge gratitude to Raylyn Christou, who was the
driving force for this project and without whom this great
result wouldn’t have been achieved.
Thank you and well done to all those families and kids who

CLASS REPS
As the term draws to an end, could all Class Reps do their
best to ensure that something has been organised for your
class catch ups. It’s a great opportunity for the families to
get together with their class at least once a term. Please
contact Melissa Tung (Class Rep coordinator) should you
require any ideas or assistance.
NEXT PA MEETING
Our monthly meeting will be held this Friday 23 June at
1.30pm in the Staff Room. Please joins us for a mixture of
serious planning as well as some light hearted socialising!
ROTARY SPEECH CONTEST
2017 Templestowe Rotary Speech Contest
On Wednesday night, 14th June, Templestowe Rotary Club
held the 5th Annual Speech Contest for Year 5 and 6
students in the Templestowe area, held at St Charles
Borromeo Primary School. Charan Sukumar from Year 6
and Darcy Mitchell from Year 5 were selected to represent
Serpell. Rotary members, sponsor representatives, the
Mayor of Manningham, teachers and parents attended the
evening, along with contest judges from Toastmasters
International Clubs. The 12 contestants from local Primary
Schools all gave speeches of a very high standard on a
variety of topics. Darcy and Charan both presented very
confident speeches on the topic, “It’s OK to Be Different”.
Both the boys had created very engaging speeches with
thoughtful content and presented extremely capably. The
audience really enjoyed their speeches. At the end of the
evening, Serpell not only won the contest, with the
Toastmasters judges awarding Darcy Mitchell first place,
but Charan Sukumar took out second place as well! The
school will be presented with the perpetual trophy at
assembly soon. Congratulations to Darcy and Charan! We
are extremely proud of both of you. Well done on your
dedicated preparation and rehearsal and thanks to the
parents for their assistance with the boys’ participation
also. Thanks to sponsor, Bendigo Bank, for the $300, $200
and $50 vouchers presented to the boys.

TOURNAMENT OF THE MINDS
Tournament of Minds
Last Tuesday afternoon, 13 students participated at the
Divisional Cross Country Carnival, held at Yarra Glen
Racecourse. In fields of 50-60 participants, we competed
against Maroondah Division for coveted places at the
Eastern Region finals being held today, the 20th June. The
children have been training hard, running about 10kms at
school every week since the start of the term. Well done to
all the children, regardless of whether they have made it to
the next level or not. Be proud of your achievements thus
far and your efforts to get there. Three children will run next
week - Sienna Rowe U10 (2nd); Olivia May U10 (3rd) and
Anita Birchall U11 (10th).
Remaining places are as follows Samuel Niemes (15th); Miranda Chu (17th); Julian Ene
(28th); William Morrison (29th); Ry Cantwell (31st); Logan
Cox (32nd); Adam Halabi (38th); Olivia Kwei (41st); Lia
Nikolouzakis (41st); Anthony Himing (43rd).
Recognition must also go to Ayan Mohammad, Montana
Basile, Yee Yuan Lim and Matthew Sabiston who qualified
as emergencies. Even though they were not called upon to
run, they still trained hard with the others all term.
Thank you also to the parents who came in support and
also assisted with transport.

This term fourteen Year 5 and 6 students have begun
working towards the Tournament of Minds Regional
competition for 2017.
This competition involves a great deal of dedication, hard
work and enthusiasm from the students and allows them to
build their profiles as learners, thinkers, collaborators and
leaders. Our students are working with long term
challenges that involve planning and creating, as well as
training for a Spontaneous Challenge to be completed on
the performance day.
The regional competition is undertaken by approximately
500 teams across Victoria and Serpell is proud to have two
exceptional teams working towards this challenge.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE
Wow only two weeks of school until the holidays are upon
us. This week we are continuing our art program of shapes,
maths and colours, the children have been enjoying
creating the different art.
Winter weather is with us, we are heading out side to play
games on the basketball court and when weather permits,
we head to the oval as well. The children have been
having fun with soccer, footy, two square and four square
and down ball, plus much more.
Inside there has been dodgeball, skittles, group circle
games, some fun running games, dress ups, card games
and so much more.
School holiday club bookings are now open. There are
so many fun and exciting activities. We will be heading to
the movies to see the Despicable 3 movie and creating fun
items to take home. There will be sports games, art/craft,
quiet activities, imagination activities, science and cooking.
Each day will have many activities on hand. Please log on

each day. Don't forget to book!

Saturday 17th June
The Jets played in the semi-final on
Saturday and had a good win so will be
playing in the grand final next Saturday.
We wish them all the best. The Meteors
played their final game and finished on top of the ladder in
their section, after a draw with the second placed team.
The Comets have shown great progress this season and
had a lot of fun, and we congratulate them on their
sportsmanship. Thanks to all the coaches for their efforts
on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The players and families
appreciate your contribution. Finally, thanks to all the
parents for their support. The final training for this term is
on Tuesday and then training will resume in Term 3 on the
18th of July.
