They must be protected, advanced. TALKING POINTS The new paid sick days rule is a tremendous advance that will benefit workers, families, businesses and communities throughout the country in meaningful ways. The full effect of the rule will be significant for millions of people. More than one million federal contract workers and their children, partners, parents and other loved ones will be more secure and healthier as a result of this rule. Nearly 600,000 people who currently do not have a single paid sick day will no longer have to choose between a paycheck and taking the time they need to recover from the flu or other common and often contagious illnesses. Hundreds of thousands of other federal contract workers will have their existing paid sick days protections strengthened or expanded, so they can earn more time than they have now, or use that time without fear of discrimination for doing so or to provide care for family members. A growing body of evidence demonstrates the widespread benefits of paid sick days. Evidence from cities, states and employers that have adopted paid sick days policies makes clear that paid sick days promote healthier workplaces and communities while saving employers, taxpayers and families money through reduced health care costs and improved employee retention and productivity. But opponents continue to try and thwart progress and undermine essential paid sick days protections, despite strong and mounting evidence that paid sick days are low-risk, high-reward policies, and workers’ urgent need for the health and economic stability paid sick days provide. So as we celebrate the new paid sick days rule and essential protections and benefits it will provide for millions of people, we must also remain vigilant against efforts to take away this important policy advance and call out those who seek to obstruct further progress – at every level. In the months and years ahead, coalitions of workers, advocates, lawmakers and business owners will keep the country moving forward toward the day no one has to choose between job and family, while shining a bright light on efforts to roll back essential, much-needed, pro-worker and pro-family gains.
