parents and chaperones. Some teams were
just arriving and registering while others
were mixing and mingling. Groups of kids
were huddled everywhere, kneeling next to
each other, pouring over pins. One group
however wasn’t too hard to miss with girls
decked out in elaborately decorated purple
hats resembling sombreros and boys with
oversized top hats.
This is the first time for Team Super Crazy
Heroes from Monterrey, Mexico to compete
at the OotM World Finals. This group of 7
students plus their chaperones and coaches
are visiting the capital region of Michigan
from the capital city of the state of Nuevo
León in Mexico. Mariana Valdez, age 12, is
looking forward to competing along with her
twin brother Daniel and 5 other students. The
team arrived in Detroit with over 1,700 miles
under its belt. It was a long journey, but to be
able to compete in the World Finals is a dream

JIM MOUREY BRINGS FELLOW ALUMNI TOGETHER TO MAKE AN IMPACT
BY AMANDA VASAS
W
hether you know him personally or
as a charming co-host of the World
Finals Awards Ceremony, Dr. Jim Mourey is
no doubt a familiar face as a fellow OotM
alumnus. An assistant professor, marketing
consultant, author and performer, he’s
using his special talent connecting others
through OdysseyAlumni, the official OotM
alumni organization.
Jim volunteered to build OdysseyAlumni
and in just two years, it has over 1,000 alumni
from around the world registered and more
alumni joining at an exponential pace.
“I truly believe that the reason people
stay so active in the organization is that we
are a global family of like-minded people
who don't run away from problems but who,
instead, run toward problems and propose
several solutions,” said Jim.
Whether that’s finding other college
students to create a virtual Division IV team,
volunteering to serve as an official, making
financial donations or volunteering to help

INTERNATIONAL COMPONENT ESSENTIAL TO
FULL ODYSSEY EXPERIENCE
BY BRENDAN DWYER
M
ichigan State University campus is
buzzing with hundreds of unique
odyssey teams, each with their own unique
story to tell. What do all the teams have in
common? They’ve made it to World Finals!
It’s an amazing accomplishment and this
international stage is the pinnacle of the
Odyssey experience.
After all, at the heart of the OotM pledge
is better understanding of others through
innovation, creativity and team problem
solving. What better way to experience that
fully than with participants from not just
around the country, but around the world!
Consider for a moment the 186 international
teams coming to the U.S. for World Finals
this year. They will encounter a different
culture, written and spoken language, foods,
and many other needs and challenges. How
does OotM support its valued international
guests? Enter the OotM International Crew!
“We feel the international component of
Odyssey brings great benefit and fantastic
experiences for both the international and
U.S. teams,” said Linda Stevenson, part of
this year’s International Crew. “Through
programs like Buddy Teams and Homestay,
international teams get vital support and the
OotM program becomes a real global entity.”
The buddy team program was developed so
that each international team had a buddy team
from the U.S. or Canada to assist them during
World Finals. From lodging in the dorms to
exploring meal options, the buddy teams work
together, bond and many times form lifelong
friendships. The Homestay Program takes
that hospitality one step further by inviting
international teams to stay with U.S. Odyssey
families for a few days after World Finals to
make the very most out of their trip to the
United States.
“We hope that this year’s OotM teams
will be a ‘pebble in a pond’ at World Finals,”
continued Stevenson. “Meeting, playing and
working together can make all this year’s
teams see how the world can be a peaceful
place, and the ripples can spread to include
everyone in the world. Our future can have a
great start by what is learned at World Finals
by teams, officials, parents and friends.”
Is your team a part of either of these great
programs to support the international strength
of Odyssey of the Mind? If so, great! If not –
there’s always next year!
and save offending messages.
• Remember to keep your personal computers,
cell phones, wallets or purses with you at all
times when visiting about campus.
• Campus safety is everyone’s concern, but
ultimate responsibility is YOURS!
Fire
Halls are equipped with fire alarm systems,
fire-rated doors and hard-wired smoke detectors.
All halls have monthly drills and are inspected
annually. East Lansing Fire Department is
responsible for the suppression of fires on
campus and the fire department has a station on
campus.
Door Access
All residence halls are equipped with electronic
building access technology restricting access to
the exterior doors, living wings and elevators.
Living wings in residence halls are locked 24
hours a day, seven days a week. A valid MSU ID
card is required to gain access to living wings
and to activate elevators within the residence
halls. All guests must be escorted by a resident
for the duration of their stay.
Personal Safety
Residence hall rooms are equipped with
viewers (peepholes) and students are encouraged
to keep their room door locked at all times.
Public residence halls are locked at midnight and
residents will need their MSU ID card to access
the building. All guests must be escorted by
a resident for the duration of their stay. After
midnight, all guests must also be registered with
the night receptionist and entry is restricted to
front doors only.
Emergency Notification System
MSU has an emergency notification system
in place and emergency text messaging to
subscribing MSU community members.
Reverse 911 System
In halls with telephone land lines, MSU uses this
system to disseminate emergency instructions,
as well as to contact students with emergency
information. Voicemail must be activated for the
system to work.
Emergency Green Phones
Residence halls without landline room phones
have emergency room phones installed on every
floor. This will allow anyone with a safety risk
or concern to quickly get to a phone with one
button emergency capability, greatly increasing
emergency response time.

writers of tomorrow have this opportunity
to reach their fullest potential in the way that
Odyssey did for each of us,” said Jim.
His passion is rooted in his own Odyssey
legacy. As a child, Jim spent 10 years competing,
seven years at World Finals (placing as high
as 7th, 5th, 3rd and 1st), volunteering for 15
years, announcing at World Finals for 10 years,
hosting at the Awards Ceremony for five years,
and volunteering as board member for Creative
Opportunities Unlimited for the past two years.
“Odyssey was the first opportunity I had as a
child to have an outlet for performing – to learn
the process of creating something new with a
team of other smart, creative people,” said Jim.
“It allowed me to, quite simply, be me.”
World Finals brings the launch of the full
version of the Alumni database. This allows
people worldwide to join, explore and to meet
fellow alumni for educational, career, social,
and travel connections -- and, of course, to
volunteer for OotM!
