THE two people killed in a
horror smash just outside of
Barrow Creek were a husband
and wife in their 70s from Tasmania.
The pair was killed instantly
when the Land Rover Discovery, towing a caravan, came
off the bitumen and the driver
over corrected.
It caused the 4WD and
caravan to jackknife before
colliding with a Fiat Ducato
motorhome.
The 4WD, that was travelling north towards Darwin,
caught fire immediately after
the crash and was completely
destroyed.
The two people in the motorhome were another husband and wife aged in their 70s
from New South Wales and
were travelling south towards
Alice Springs.
Once they were freed from
the wreckage they were flown
to Alice Springs Hospital.

The woman suffered serious head injuries and was
flown to Adelaide for further
treatment yesterday.
The man was in a stable
condition in Alice Springs
Hospital and was being treated
for a broken leg.
Detective Acting Superintendent Darwin Traffic Operations Janelle Tonkin said
investigations were ongoing
but at this stage excessive
speed was not considered to be
a factor in the crash.
“We don’t believe speed was
a factor although there is no
speed limit in that zone we
don’t believe they were travelling at a speed that would be
deemed to be too fast for the
vehicles,” she said.

Russian balloonist breaks record
RUSSIAN adventurer Fedor
Konyukhov has broken the record for the fastest circumnavigation of the earth in a hot

the same spot.
He beat the late Steve Fossett’s round the world record
by two days.
He is now looking to make a

Mr
Konyukhov’s
son,
Oscar, said his father had already travelled 34,000km, but
would not celebrate until he
was safely on Australian soil.
“He’s still up in the air, he
needs to be down on the

said yesterday morning.

A LEBANESE court is set to
hand down its verdict on
whether a former Australian
soldier charged over 60 Minutes’ botched child abduction
attempt is allowed to lift a ban
preventing him from leaving
the country while on bail.
Australian-British national
Adam Whittington is expected
to hear the verdict at a Beirut
court today after the father of
the children at the centre of
scandal successfully placed a
travel ban on him.
Mr Whittington, who acts
as a child recovery agent, was
last week granted bail on charges of kidnapping the children
of Brisbane mum Sally Faulkner from a street in Lebanon in
April while being filmed by a
Nine Network 60 Minutes
crew.
Mr Whittington’s lawyer
Joe Karam said his client was
being held to ransom by the father, Ali Elamine, who he accused of applying the travel
ban after demanding money in
return for dropping charges
against Mr Whittington and
his colleagues.
Mr Elamine’s team allegedly asked for a “huge
amount” of money from Mr
Whittington’s family.
While Ms Faulkner and the
60 Minutes crew were released
from jail after two weeks because Nine reportedly paid
$500,000 to the children’s
Lebanese father, Mr Whittington and his three colleagues
were kept behind bars.
Mr Karam said he has presented evidence in court of a
$500,000 cheque paid to Mr
Elamine’s lawyer for the release of the defendants.
