Judson ISD Organizes First Special Olympic Flag Football Team
If you want to see athletes that play their sport with unmatched passion and
enthusiasm, then it’s time you watched the inaugural year of the Judson ISD
ThunderRockets flag football team. Their first game will be October 13 th at the Fox
Tech High School football field. They will participate in a round robin type tournament
with teams from other schools starting at 9 am through 4 pm. The Thunder-Rockets are
special education student athletes from Judson and Wagner High Schools as well as
Kitty Hawk Middle School and have been practicing since last October. This is a first not
just for our district, but this is the first year the state has sanctioned the sport for Special
Olympics with players participating in it last year as a demonstration sport. They’ve
already played one scrimmage with the NEISD team (the San Antonio Fire) and are
looking forward to testing their skills in tournament play.
The ThunderRockets team was organized by Special Education Coach Ed Waring with
help from Johnny Gonzalez. The games are played with adapted rules for the athletes’
skills and offer a unique brand of sportsmanship and play that will warm your heart.
They will also play three regular season games before they play in the state Special
Olympics tournament in December. Come out and experience the ThunderRockets
season!
