THE CALVARY SPIRIT “Sharing God’s Love in Worship, Fellowship and In Service to our Neighbors.” Church Staff Rev. Linda Kozlowski, Pastor Margaret Curry, Organist & Choir Director JoAnn Longacre, Church Administrator Linda Himeback, Treasurer June 2017 Calvary United Church of Christ 1231 Route 100, Barto PA 19504 phone #610-652-5023 Pastor Linda’s phone # 484-529-2241 [email protected] www.calvaryuccbarto.org NOTES FROM PASTOR LINDA O God, out of all the world you let us find one another and learn together the meaning of love. Let us never fail to hold love precious. Let the flame of it never waver or grow dim, but burn in our hearts as an unwavering devotion and shine through our eyes in gentleness and understanding on which no shadow falls… Teach us to remember the little courtesies, to be swift to speak the grateful and happy word, to believe rejoicingly in each other’s best, and to face all life bravely because we face it with united hearts. --Walter Russell Bowie (1882-1969) How easy it is to grumble and to complain. How easy it is to find fault in others. How easy it is to forget to be grateful for what we have right now in our lives. How easy it is to focus on our own wants, our own desires while forgetting or neglecting the needs of our sisters and brothers. Surely this is not how our Creator wants us to live. Surely this is not the way Jesus showed us to live. Surely this is not how the Spirit moves within and around us. Our God’s very nature is love and this love binds us together—in relationship, in community. This love, which is freely given to each of us, allows us in return to be there for each other in times of joy and in times of sorrow. This love, which is never-ending, reminds us to be grateful for what we have, to be thankful for the way God watches over us, the way God forgives us, the way God walks with us. As a community of God’s children, we are called to grow together. Sometimes this means listening to each other; sometimes this means letting go of what really doesn’t matter in the long run; sometimes this means asking questions for clarification. None of us have all the answers but together we can ponder the mysteries of this wonderful and amazing gift of life. In his prayer/poem, Walter Russell Bowie reminds us to remember the little courtesies…this we should do for our sisters and our brothers. To believe rejoicingly in each other’s best…this we should do for our family, our friends, our neighbors. To face all life bravely because we face it with united hearts…this we can do because we have each other. The Calvary Spirit 1 Life is so very hard to face alone. We won’t always agree with each other yet God calls us to love each other. As we move into the summer months, let’s try to let go of past conflicts. Instead, let’s start afresh. Let’s try to put aside past differences, and instead look for the good in each other. Let’s move forward together as a faith community following the teachings, the ways, the word of Jesus. Let’s allow the Spirit of Christ to blow through our faith community, to transform each of us, to soften our hearts, to lead us to gentleness. Let’s live together as the Body of Christ…knowing that each of us has a space, that each of us has a gift, that each of us is wanted, welcome, and loved here at Calvary United Church of Christ. Peace, love, and blessings, Pastor Linda PASTOR LINDA’S SUMMER OFFICE HOURS Beginning, June 12th, Pastor Linda’s summer hours will be Mondays 3:00-4:30 pm and Wednesdays 1-3 pm. The Calvary Spirit 2 CONFIRMATION CLASS UPDATE Calvary’s Confirmation Class extends their thanks and gratitude to all who donated items so they could make lunch bags for Main Street Ministries in Pottstown to hand out to their homeless clients. Jesus calls us to feed those who hunger for then we are feeding him. So often we have refrigerators and pantries filled with food while our sisters and brothers have no idea where their next meal will come from. Thank you for sharing and feeding those who have little. THEME SUNDAYS IN JULY Once again our Worship Service during the month of July will include themes. We invite you to dress in the theme of the day as the Spirit moves you. July 2nd—Red, White & Blue Sunday July 9th—Crazy Hair Sunday July 16th—Camp Fire Sunday—Service will be held outdoors under the pavilion July 23rd—Christmas in July Sunday July 30th—Slippers, Socks, Shoeless Sunday FELLOWSHIP PADS After conversation on the pros and cons, Consistory has agreed that we will begin to use Fellowship Pads at Calvary UCC. What are Fellowship Pads? There are pads in each pew for everyone to sign on Sundays. There is also a space for prayer requests. If you should see someone new sitting beside you, please fill in your address/phone number in addition to your name as it has been proven this encourages the guest to also offer their full information. What are the benefits of Fellowship Pads? Pastor Linda can better be aware of who is worshiping with us and who is missing. This will allow her to be in touch with folks who may miss a few weeks of worship to see if they are in need of a visit, a conversation, a prayer. We will no longer have a need for Communion Cards as our Church Administrator will know who was present on Communion Sundays Guests worshipping with us will be able to share their information more easily and also let Pastor Linda know if they would like to be contacted to learn more about Calvary. There is a space for prayer requests for those who would rather not lift up prayers and concerns during the service. If you have been sitting beside someone and do not know their name, you can easily find this out by looking at the Fellowship Pad as it is passed on a Sunday morning. Please take time each Sunday morning to sign them as we try to become a church which is continually seeking ways to be welcoming and hospitable. The Calvary Spirit 3 CONSISTORY NEWS The days finally seem like they are long enough to accomplish work both inside and outside of the house. Funny how we equate daylight hours to more hours in a day. We only have 24 hours yet it seems like many more when the sun doesn’t set until 8:30 or 9:00 PM. I don’t know about most of you but I like this time of year: spring, summer and even fall when its nice weather outside and I can go outside and just enjoy the beauty of the earth. In June, we celebrate Fathers, and those who play a father figure role or Moms who play a dual role as Dad and we thank God for all of those who help to guide and shape our kids. We celebrate Graduates, those who will graduate High School and go on to College in the fall or those who will go out into the work place, wherever life takes you remember to take God with you. For those College graduates who will begin a career, best of luck to you and congratulations. May God always be with you. The Calvary Spirit 6 GENERAL CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS THANK YOU to all who helped with the Spring Flea Market, the profit was $2,550.58 USAGAIN Many of you have dropped off clothes, shoes, and other items in the USAgain bins located on our property. Thank you for helping us and USAgain recycle these items and also take action against climate change. According to USAgain, the company fights climate change in two ways: 1. We extend the life of clothes and shoes and save millions of pounds of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. We all know that burning coal, oil, and gas creates greenhouse gas emissions, but few people realize that as much as 10% of the greenhouse gases come from manufacturing clothes. 2. We plant a tree every time you fill a USAgain bin with clothes. Planting trees is a very effective way to reduce the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, along with many other benefits. This is why USAgain has planted more than 720,000 trees since 2013. Each one of these trees absorbs 50 pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere per year, for a total of 30 million pounds! With your help we will plant another 120,000 trees in 2017. The company also offers: We would like to thank you for being a part of a solution. By hosting a clothing bin: You help provide good, affordable clothes to people who need them around the world. You make it easy and convenient for people in your community to dispose of clothes and shoes they don’t need. You take care of the environment so that it can continue to take care of our children, our children’s children, and us. You cool the planet and save resources by promoting clothing reuse and planting trees. Many thanks and let’s continue to recycle what we no longer need so those who have little can be clothed and more trees can be planted. Thank you GRADUATES If you have a graduate in the family or are a graduate yourself, please let the church office know so we can recognize and celebrate you at our upcoming Graduate Worship service in June.
