Odds vs. Probability


Probabilities and odds only differ in the way they
represent the chance of an event occurring.

In the end, using one over the other is just a
matter of preference.

Personally, I would recommend using
probabilities because as you learn more analysis,
you will constantly be using probabilities.
Suppose you have a fair 6-sided die and wanted to find the probability of rolling an even
number.
Outcomes
1
2
6 possible
outcomes
3
4
5
6
3 favorable
outcomes
Suppose you wanted to determine the odds in favor of rolling an even number.
Outcomes
1
3 unfavorable
outcomes
2
3
4
5
6
3 favorable
outcomes
Here both the probability and the odds in favor of rolling an even number are telling us the
same thing.
The probability tells us that the chances of rolling an even or odd number are equally likely.
The odds in favor of rolling an even number tells us that the chances of rolling an even
number is equally likely as the chance of rolling an odd number.
As you can see, they both mean the same thing, the only difference between the two is in the
way they express themselves.
