Basketball is a very important sport in my life and that is something I love to play.
It’s been in my life for about ten or eleven years now and I still have the same feeling for
it. Over the years, the game has been changing and new rules have been established. The
topic I am choosing is the rule changes the NCAA made this year in college basketball.
Three that are very important and can change the game drastically. Those three are the
shot clock is reduced from 35 to 30 seconds, refs will be allowed to use replay reviews
for potential shot clocks violations on made baskets throughout the game, and no more
five second rule while the dribbler is being guarded closely.
With the clock being reduced from 35 seconds to 30 seconds speeds the game up
by a lot. Five seconds in a basketball game is a lot and a lot can happen with those five
seconds. For the offensive team, it means they have to get their plays off quicker and take
better shots with shorter time. I can see it now that there is going to be a lot of shot clock
violations because the time got reduced. No team is used to the shorter time because it
just became a new rule this year. I like the rule though because the game is faster and
more possessions in a game. With a fast pace in the game, it is more interesting because
more things can happen.
The other new rule is refs being able to look at replays for potential shot clock
violations on made baskets throughout the game. Sometimes when the shot clock is going
down and it gets to zero, the player that is shooting may not get the shot off in time but
the ref cant see it clearly so the basket is going to be good. Now with the new rule, the
refs can stop the game and check to see if it should count or not. I agree with this new
rule one hundred percent because its fair and the NBA have already made that change as
well.
The last new rule they changed this year that I think can make a big impact is no
more five-second rule while guarding closely. The dribbler has nothing to worry about
anymore while dribbling but besides taking care of the ball. If you were guarded closely
for five seconds before the new rule change, then the other team would get the ball and it
would count as a turnover. I honestly don’t know the reason for this rule but I also don’t
agree with it. I think the rule should still be in effect because the defense should be
rewarded if they are playing great defense and it is closely by a defender.
Basketball is going to be different now because of the new rules. There are more
rules then three that they changed but I chose those three just because I thought they will
have a huge impact in basketball and would change the game. With the shot clock
reduced, refs being allowed to review plays, and no more five seconds is really just
getting college players ready for the NBA. The shot clock is the NBA is 24 seconds, the
NBA can already review plays, and There is no five seconds closely guard in the NBA. I
like the way they are changing some rules and I think it will make the game of basketball
better and more interesting.
