The Sentence
Subject - names whom or what the sentences is
about.
My brother’s friend
The waffles for breakfast
Predicate - tells what the subject is or does
eats a big breakfast everyday.
smell delicious.
Sentence Fragment
a group of words missing a subject or predicate.
(an incomplete thought)
A complete subject - includes all the words used
to identify the person, place, thing, or idea (noun)
that the sentence is about
To find the subject, ask yourself either who or
what is doing something? or About whom or
what is some statement being made.
The heavy fish on the end of my line does
not want to be caught. (who or what does not
want to be caught?)
The turtle at the bottom of the pond is huge.
(What is huge?)
Simple subject - the main word in the complete
subject
That big black cloud on the horizon means
rain.
Sports Authority in the mall has a sale on
shoes.
Marianna danced in the rain.
A complete predicate includes all of the words
that tell what the subject is doing or that tell
something about the subject.
The cat purred loudly in the quiet room.
A simple predicate, or verb, is the main word or
phrase in a sentence.
My father cooked Italian food last night.
