The special "steak-cutting" ceremony isn't until Tuesday (Nov. 1), but the doors opened today at celebrity chef
Kelly English's namesake steakhouse at Harrah's St. Louis Casino and Hotel in Maryland Heights.
The menu is described as half seafood and half steaks, flavored with a blend of French-Creole and Southern
influences. Specific dishes include a New York strip steak stuffed with stuffed oysters and blue cheese; a salad
of fried oysters on a pool of blue cheese dressing, topped with a small local green and blue cheese salad; a pork
chop stuffed with dirty rice; and rosemary-, thyme- and sage-roasted prime rib. Steak prices range from $33 for
an 8-ounce filet to $42 for a 22-ounce porterhouse; both come with a salad and side dish.
English was one Food & Wine magazine's 2009 Best New Chefs, was a semifinalist for a regional 2010 James
Beard Award, and owns Restaurant Iris in Memphis.

Tuesday, Nov. 1, is opening day for J. Gilbert's Wood-Fired Steaks and Seafood, in an outbuilding tucked against
the west side of West County Center in Des Peres. It's part of a small chain that also has restaurants in Hartford,
Conn., Washington, D.C., Kansas City and Columbus, Ohio.
As do many restaurants, J.Gilbert's held a preopening dry run. They invited people for dinner Friday and
Saturday at no charge, although tips were accepted and alcoholic beverages were available for purchase.
I ate there Saturday night and enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Although the staff was still in training, we
noticed few missteps. We were able to select from four entrees and each opted for steaks (a filet and a New
York strip). The steaks, all prime grade, were tender and flavorful, and the wild mushroom coating on the filet
really enhanced the flavor. The price of an steak with two sides ranges from $29 for a 6-ounce filet to $48 for a
24-ounce porterhouse.
We also ordered the crab bisque , creamy and infused with the sweet flavor of blue crab, and the wedge salad, a
classic combination of iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes, crumbled bacon and chunks of blue cheese, on a pool of
Maytag blue dressing.
The dining room was decorated in browns and golds, with rustic wood siding on the walls, making for a
comfortable atmosphere further warmed by the unflagging friendliness of the staff.
