Mollie Rose Trail and Ji Hyun Ryu started with the paper in 2013 and have successfully published nearly 20 articles combined and both received an award at
the Student Awards Banquet last year. Both are starting their second year in
editor positions in the HCC Times.
We are here to help you with
writing for the HCC Times.
So, you’re interested in writing
for the HCC Times? Relax. It’s
not as hard as you think. The
following are information,
guidelines, deadlines, and a list
of available resources. We, the
editors, are here to help you, but
let this be a guide for you
when we are not around.
All we ask from you is two
things: Communication and
Commitment. Keep in touch
with us through the process of
writing your article and if you
say you’re going to write the
article, please commit and do
write the article. Be honest with
yourself and us if you can write
the article or not.
CONTENT
These are the sections of our newspaper.
Your article should fit somewhere within
these categories.

DEADLINES!
Deadlines are important and meeting those
deadlines means a better finished product and a
greater chance at publication.
Second deadline: send either an
outline or draft to our email.
March issue
2/9/15
First deadline: fill out our assignment form, which confirms
what you will be writing your
article about or what other content you will be providing, such
as a photo or piece of creative
writing. This assignment form
can be found on our Canvas
page.
March issue — 2/4/15
April issue — 3/4/15
May issue — 4/8/15
Checklist
- Does it relate to HCC and its
students?
- Do you have a credible
source that is an “expert” in the
field or has prominence in the
organization, etc. for your article?
- Do you give credit to your
sources and information?
- Does it have “meat”, a unique
perspective (something that
you might not find on 1,000
blogs on the internet)?
- Does it stay on focus or stray
from the main idea?
- Does it include pictures?

PLANNING :
Experience vs.
Discipline
Final deadline: send a completed article to our email.
BECAUSE THE DEADLINES
ARE NOT TOO FAR APART,
ALWAYS BE THINKING OF
YOUR NEXT ARTICLE AS
SOON AS YOU FINISH ONE.
March issue
2/13/15
April issue
3/13/15
May issue
4/17/15
Be aware that we may contact you sometime during the week after
you submit your article as we go through the editing process.
Because the deadlines are not too far apart, always be thinking of
your next article as soon as you finish one.
Don’t wait until that last moment to work on your article.
Take steps here and there to
get everything you will need
for you to actually write your
piece. Email anyone you
need for sources right away
and do some research in the
mean time. Some people will
respond quickly to your request for an interview or answer some questions, others
will not. Plan for that.
Meetings and Resources
There are ways to get help. You are not in this alone!
This will be where you turn in
your outline/draft (newspaper
meetings fall on the deadline for
in person article submission), but
also time to sit down and discuss
what we’re doing and what you’re
doing. This is a time for questions
and answers.
