Tryouts
Ottawa Middle School teams have a no-cut policy. Each player will have
the opportunity to participate on either the Varsity/Junior Varsity team or the
Instructional Team; however playing time will be at the coach’s discretion. In
volleyball and basketball, Varsity/Junior Varsity will consist of 16-18 players and
the remaining players will be on the Instructional Team. The Instructional Team
will not play in league games and will instead play intra-squad games on Fridays
and attend a non-league tournament at the end of the year.
Student/Athlete Conduct


After-school detention: Coaches will determine how playing time will
be affected.
In-school suspension during an athletic season:
 One day of ISS--Coaches will determine how playing time will
be affected unless the ISS falls on a game day. In this case, the
athlete will not be allowed to compete.
 Two days of ISS--Student will miss the next competition day.
 Three days of ISS--Student will be dropped from this sport.

Student suspended out-of-school will immediately be removed from
the sport they are currently participating in. The athletic director will
determine if the student will be allowed to participate in other sports.
Absences
Missed practices are not excused unless the student communicates with the
coach in advance or right after school. The coach will determine if the reason for
missing a practice is legitimate. Students must attend a majority of the school day
in order to participate in practices or competitions. The administration may waive
these requirements.



1st unexcused absence--Coach determines how playing time affected.
2nd unexcused absence--Student will miss the next competition day.
3rd unexcused absence--Student will be dismissed from the team.

Grades
Athletes will follow eligibility guidelines found on page 7 of the student
handbook.



The first week an athlete shows up on the F list, he/she is given a
warning.
The second consecutive week an athlete shows up on the F list,
he/she will not compete in games or contests. The athlete may still
practice.
The third straight week an athlete shows up on the F list, he/she will
not compete in games or contests and cannot practice. The athlete
will be required to report to practice and do homework.
Athletes will remain on the third step until all grades are passing. Grades
will be checked every Monday at 8 A.M.
Away Games Transportation
All students are to ride to and from away games on the bus. If parents go to
away games, they may take their own son/daughter home, as long as they inform
the coach prior to leaving.
Participation on Athletic Teams Outside of School
Kansas State High School Activities Association states that a student who
is a member of a school athletic squad may not participate as a member of an
outside team or as an independent competitor during the season of the same sport.
Sportsmanship
If a player, coach, spectator, student, or parent is observed acting
inappropriately, the administration expects it to be stopped. That individual may
be asked to leave by an official, school personnel, administrator, or police officer.
If the person resists leaving, the police will be called and he/she will be escorted
out. The individual may forfeit his/her privilege of attending future contests –
home or away. If removed from a game, the individual will be required to meet
with school administration to discuss the issue. If the individual shows up at
future contest without resolving the issue, he/she may be charged with trespassing.
-3-
Parent/Coach Communication
Be supportive of the coaching staff in front of your son/daughter.
Encourage your child to discuss the issue with his/her coach first. If you would
like to visit with your child’s coach please call him/her to arrange an appointment.
To reach a coach, call the main school number (785-229-8030) and leave a voicemail message with your name, number, and the reason for your call. Additionally,
you may contact the coach by email. This is on the school’s website under the
staff directory.
Please contact the athletic director, Kyle Kost, at any time by phone at
(785-229-8030) or by email at [email protected].
Injuries
If an athlete is injured at practice or during a game, the coach may require a
note or verbal confirmation from the parent indicating it is okay for the athlete to
resume physical activities. If an athlete is injured and is taken to a doctor, the
athlete will not be allowed to resume practice or game participation until the coach
is given a note from the doctor indicating the athlete can resume physical
activities.
Uniforms
Uniforms will be checked out to athletes. Athletes will be required to pay for any
lost or damaged uniform.
Dual Sport Participation
Student athletes may participate in two sports at the same time. The student must
declare a main sport to take precedence in the event two sporting events are
scheduled at the same time. The student athlete will need to attend practices biweekly with the secondary sport in addition to normally scheduled practices with
his/her main sport. A meeting will be held with the athletic director, coaches,
parents, and student athlete prior to participating in both sports.

GUIDELINES FOR PURCHASE OF FOOTBALL EQUIPMENT BY
PARENTS/GUARDIANS
The district purchases various models of equipment, which all meet or exceed all required safety
standards, are approved for us by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic
Equipment (NOCSAE) and are regularly used by high schools across the United States. The
District maintains and reconditions its equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s
recommendations. The district also purchases new equipment on a regular cycle. With that said,
a parent/guardian may purchase alternate equipment under the following guidelines.
1)
The equipment must be NOCSAE approved for use at the high school level.
2)
The parents/guardian will make a donation to the school for the full price of the
equipment.
3)
The equipment will be purchased by the school and will become part of the school’s
inventory for the duration of a player’s career at the school.
4)
During the duration of the player’s career, the school will assume the responsibility of
reconditioning, inspection, etc. as they would for any other school-purchased football
helmet. In the event, during reconditioning, a piece of equipment is rejected or found to
be defective that equipment is not returned to USD 290.
5)
The school will check the equipment out to the player for any use at summer contact
camps as they would for any other protective equipment provided by the school. Once
again, the equipment is part of the school’s inventory.
6)
Athletes currently using personal equipment must provide proof of date of manufacture
or recertification prior to the start of the 2013-14 football season. The helmet will then
be considered part of the school’s inventory and will be reconditioned on the USD 290
schedule. The equipment will be re-issued to the owner in subsequent seasons of
participation.
7)
At the conclusion of the player’s high school career, the parents/guardian would have the
option of keeping the equipment or donating it to the school.
My signature indicates that I have read and understand the policy and will adhere to its
guidelines.
