Presidents Address
By Lesley Hirst
Message from the president PCNIG 2011
I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year
and thank you for investing in the PCNIG. Our
membership has grown exponentially since we
formed and we are one of the fastest growing
interest groups RNAO has ever had. This speaks
to the commitment nurses have in palliative care
and demonstrates our worth as a voice to be
recognized. Your executive has been busy
communicating to RNAO the issues you face as
RNs working in palliative care and we have been
heard by our professional association. RNAO
recognizes the challenges we face and the value
we bring to healthcare as a group.
This acknowledgement brings with it the
opportunity to change and shape the healthcare
system. As we strive for pay parity for nurses
working in community and hospice settings and
the recognition of RNs as a vital part of the team
whose clinical intuition, knowledge, critical thinking
and application cannot be replaced by another
healthcare provider, our voice is heard and we are
able to collaborate with others to build on the
momentum.

Presidents address continued
We have also achieved much clinically. We developed a position
statement on palliative sedation and I would like to acknowledge, Kim
Marsh, Maryse Bouvette, Amanda MacLennan, Mandy McGregor, Karen
Johansen and Sandra De Costa and who were pivotal in getting this off the
ground and finally the core working group who brought it to fruition and all
those who provided feedback. Without the work of everyone involved we
could not have achieved such great results over a short period of time. The
CHPCA nurses’ interest group has embraced our document and it has
been circulated now across the province with the hope that it will be
adopted by others. We should be very proud of this work.
I have also been busy talking about the group and palliative care. I was
able to present at CHPCA about our group and also presented at the
RNAO assembly. I have created a practice profile page for RNAO which
can be used for nurses to review who may be considering entering the
palliative field. Upcoming events are the RNAO assembly in February and
the RNAO AGM in April.
It’s hard to believe that the group was initiated 2 years ago in June 2011
and we are 2 years as an official RNAO interest group in December this
year. Having said that, this also means that my term as President is
coming to an end. As I prepare to pass the torch to the President Elect in
September I would like all of you to consider a position on the executive.
We will be having our AGM at the provincial One Vision One Voice
conference in April and at that time we will be voting for the new executive.
It is a great opportunity to develop skills, meet new people, understand
how RNAO functions and really shape palliative care. If you are interested
please contact us for nomination forms or any member of the executive re
any of the positions.
Until that point I can assure you that I will continue to represent you to the
best of my abilities and strengthen the voice of palliative care nurses.
Lesley

Do you know who we are?
Just to let you know that our
President Leslie Hirst presented at
the national Canadian Hospice
palliative care conference in Ottawa
this past Oct. Her topic was how we
started our palliative care interest
group. Here are some highlights;
Inaugurated into an RNAO interest
group on December 2 2009.
Prior to this a small group of
people...just 5! worked together to
formalize a group
According to CNO registration self
reports (2008) there were approx 540
nurses who identified themselves as
their sole place of work being
palliative care
There was no strong voice
advocating for nurses working in
palliative care
What have we done so far?
We are the fastest growing interest
group to date approx 100
Formed a working group on
developing a position statement on
end of life sedation – target date Feb
2011
In the process of developing a one
day conference – Fall 2011
Communicated with the Health
Minister – June 2010
Recognized as a source of expertise,
