COMMITTEE REPORTS
PRESIDENT ’S REPORT
For me, season 2006/07 kicked off at the Senior Presentation evening way back in March last year. During that
evening it was very gratifying to witness the wonderful sense of Club spirit in evidence. Several trophy winners
spoke unprompted about the Club and how much it means to them to play for Emu Plains. I could not have
been happier, for it is this type of spirit that this committee is striving to engender. Even more pleasing is that
this sense of Club pride continued throughout this season resulting in some much improved on-field results.
In season 2006/07, the Club fielded 7 Junior and 7 Senior sides, equating to approximately 170 registered
cricketers ranging in ages from 7 through to the mid 40’s. As well, the Club conducted its ‘Have-A-Go’
programme for some 35 children under the age of 7.
The seven Senior teams was an increase on the six sides of the previous season (remembering we only had
four in 2004/05), which was a great result for the Club, bringing many new faces into the Emu Plains family.
st
th
Four of these sides qualified for the semi-finals, and two (1 and 7 Grades) made it into the Grand Final.
Unfortunately, both were defeated in the Final, but the whole Club applauds them for their efforts. In 2005/06,
th
only our 8 Grade qualified for the semis, so our success across the grades has improved dramatically. To all
the Senior sides well done. This Club is on the up and up!
st
I am an unabashed believer that the success of any Club ultimately emanates from the strength of its 1 Grade
side. It is with great pride that I have seen this team evolve from a middle-of-the-table side three seasons ago to
one that finished half a game clear on top of the ladder as Minor P remier. This was a fantastic effort. We have a
side with a wonderful mix of experience and youthful talent and we will be looking for them to go that one step
further next year.
Likewise to our Senior results, our wonderfully talented Junior sides also showed great improvement this season.
The U/11s made the semi-finals, the U/13s were Runners Up, and the all-conquering U/14s provided the sole
Premiership success to the Club. Particular congratulations to the U/14s for a terrific season, well done. To all
the boys and girls who participated in our Junior ranks I sincerely hope that above all you enjoyed your cricket
and are looking forward to building on your skills and experiences again next year.
To all our Junior coaches, managers and parents, a sincere thank you on behalf of the Club for your selfless and
untiring efforts throughout the year. I sincerely hope that season 2007/08 will see you all with us again in some
capacity.
This committee wants the Club to be seen as an enterprising, welcoming place for young children and men (and
their families) to come along to enjoy a good game of cricket and benefit from the added camaraderie in a Club
that is proud of its present efforts and history. As President, I can only try to impress upon everyone involved in
the Club that the committee will continue to work hard to provide its players with every opportunity to be
successful.
To that end I would like to thank our dedicated committee for another fine effort in the administration of the Club.
Our finances have remained stable, new equipment and clothing has been purchased, and several successful
fundraising activities have been conducted. None of this happens by itself and the professional approach of the
committee should be recognised.
A final thank you to the Board of the Emu Sports Club for the continued fruitful liaison we have enjoyed. We
have developed a very good relationship with Emu Sports and I encourage all cricket club members to use Emu
Sports’ facilities as often as you can.
Congratulations to all the trophy winners and the playing body as a whole for a fine season. Let’s all continue to
strive to make Emu Plains the best Club in the Nepean District.
Martin Bowerman, President
JUNIOR REPORT
After a slow start to registrations in the U/8 & U/9 age groups, we managed to field full teams. Thanks to the
efforts of Mark Arnold & Miles Anderson and their assistants, the game of cricket was introduced to these young
boys and girls. Looking at the statistics from these age groups, I believe we can look forward to a strong player
base in the years ahead.
The U/10's saw several players who had not played cricket before, and some "established" players from the
U/8's & U/9's. The season was very satisfying - the boys genuinely improved their skills with each game. The
running between wickets, catching, fielding, bowling & batting all improved considerably as the season went on.
The U/11's were hampered all year with only ten players, but despite this were one of the most consistent sides
in the competition. The season ended in disappointment, being eliminated from the semi-final due to a washout.
The boys were confident they could have gone past St Clair in the semi and given the title a good shake - no
doubt this will give them extra incentive for next season.

Page 5
Congratulations to the U/13's & U/14's who both reached the final. Unfortunately, the U/13's were outplayed on
the day by their close rival Penrith RSL, who bowled & fielded exceptionally well. The U/14's, however,
dominated the Cranebrook team with both bat & ball, running out convincing winners to take the district title.
Both sides earned their place in the final by their consistency over the whole season. Well done to both teams.
The U/11’s, U/13’s, & U/14’s all did well in the 1-day competition, reaching the final. Unfortunately, all must have
been distracted by holidays, as each was pipped by the opposition on the day.
The U/15's are a great unit playing in the difficult division one competition. They earned a lot of respect from their
rivals by taking it to the opposition in each and every game. I applaud every one of the boys for their strong
efforts. Let's beat Glenmore Park next season!
Each of the coaches and managers volunteered to look after their teams this year, which indicates to me the
great enthusiasm and spirit within the club.
•
Mark Arnold was only too happy to take up the challenge of U/8 coaching, and looking at the team statistics
& results, has achieved a very high standard.
•
Miles Anderson approached the club before the season and offered to coach, despite already completing an
8-year U/9 to U/16 coaching stint a few years ago.
•
Billy Ellis offered his coaching services to the U/10 team, despite his commitments to playing seniors in the
afternoon and having another child playing in a different age group.
•
Ben Jenks also approached the club during the off-season and offered to coach - again he has commitments
in the afternoon with seniors, but was only too happy to look after the kids in the morning.
•
Tony Robson volunteered once again, and took the team to a new level, reaching the 1-day and premiership
finals. Tony was also burdened with the problem of having too many players to choose from at finals time.
•
Chris Longhurst, assisted by Andrew Luzzi, approached the club and offered to coach the boys again. Chris
& Andrew's commitment allowed the boys to reach their full potential in going all the way this season. Chris
and Andrew also faced the undesirable task of having to leave players out of finals due to player numbers.
•
Martin Romer has just completed his 7 consecutive year of coaching the boys, and has already signed a
contract for next season. Martin's dedication to the team over such a long period is very much appreciated
by the players, parents, and the club.
th
Again we saw some of the older juniors rolling up for duty in the afternoon to fill in for seniors. This is a great
confidence builder for the boys - they realise they can mix it with the men. Well done to Ben McGovern, Jon
Philliponi, Brendan Hoolahan, Tom Romer, Bill Watson, Luke Fitzpatrick, Jacob Thomas, & Cameron Dantier.
Junior & Have-A-Go Player Numbers
150
Players
Disappointingly, junior player numbers were down on last
season. There has been a steady decline in junior numbers
in recent years, which of course is not sustainable. One of
the challenges facing the new committee is to work to arrest
this decline - if any players or parents could offer some
suggestions on how to achieve this, please let the committee
know. The ideal situation would be to field two teams in each
age division, allowing players to be slotted into either division
1 or 2, depending on their capability.

1ST GRADE C APTAINS REPORT
We had a very successful and enjoyable season. We led the competition from round 1 through to round 14,
finishing up minor premiers. This was a huge improvement on our previous seasons and the first time we had
made the semi finals in 5 seasons.
Unfortunately we probably saved our worst performance of the year for the grand final but it was fantastic to see
the red caps (some pink) out there in a grand final again.
Our team was a blend of great young players with a few old heads mixed amongst them. We bonded well as
team from round 1 and we all looked forward to playing cricket on a Saturday afternoon together. As a player
you knew if you did something wrong during the game you had the support of your mates for about 20 minutes,
then they turned and took the mickey out of you for the remainder of the day. It was my most enjoyable season
for some time and I hope every player returns next season to go one better.
I would like to thank Martin Bowerman and his committee for your great support throughout the season and your
nd
efforts on the Back to Emu Day and the support and barbecue on grand final day. Also, thank you to the 2
graders who helped us out during the season. I hope to see you all back next season pushing us again for a full
time spot.
A special thanks to our die hard number 1 supporters “The Huffies” who attended every game. We will get you
that premiership next season.
A big thank you to all the current players, and ex-players who showed up and supported us on grand final day. It
meant a lot to us. We are just sorry we couldn’t give you more to cheer about. Probably the best way to finish
my report is a brief description of each player and their season.
Emu Plains Cricket Club
Season Report 2006/2007
Page 11
Andrew Williams - A good young player with plenty of potential. Scored a brilliant 145 and will learn a lot from
this season. Will be a good player in years to come.
Mal Sheens – First Emu player to openly admit his homosexuality. Once this weight was lifted from his
shoulders seemed to improve immensely. Will be a force next season.
Andrew Pesle – Unfortunately alcohol, late nights (with Mal Sheens), and a sore bum the next day limited his
success this year. Nothing an off season in rehab shouldn’t fix. Announced similar confession to Mal and should
be a big improver next season.
Brett Campbell - Scored a great century earlier in the season and is a brilliant wicketkeeper. This selfconfessed lady killer never really delivered in this department. Maybe he needs to spend time with Mal to find his
inner self.
Matt Jones - Had a great season with the bat and has potential to be a star of the future for Emu. Unfortunately
his 85 year old back mightn’t handle too many more summers and may be resigned to a coaching role in years
to come.
Martin Romer – A favourite with player’s wives and girlfriends. Won a great toss in the grand final. Unfortunately
the team didn’t back it up.
Jim Micsko – Another young player who showed potential and will be an asset to the club in years to come.
Enjoyed the grand final drink, winning the quickest drunk of the evening. Seemed to bounce back to life after
being taken off suicide watch after his batting innings in the grand final.
Craig Sheens – Enjoyed bowling full tosses at the batsmen’s head during the season and taking the mickey out
of his newly proclaimed gay Uncle. If he can get to the game before 3 o’clock he will have a big future in the
game.
Ben Sheens – Built like a tank and will bowl uphill into the wind all day. Had a great season. Another young gun
with plenty of potential. Scored more runs and took more wickets and catches than his old man Greg did this
season. Unfortunately caught going through Customs with Sylvester Stallone recently but hopefully has learnt
from his mistakes.
Karl Sayers – Our star with the ball this season. Ripped the top order out of most sides. Unfortunately, his job
as a male escort at St Marys Leagues club, where he is paid to dance and entertain older ladies, left him flat
some Saturdays. Watch your wives around him.
Jason Shandler – A fantastic opening bowler with a big heart. A favourite with the younger players in the side
due to his combi van and Cheech and Chong tapes. Won best and fairest on the end of season drink for
constantly bashing Andrew Pesle and resisting his advances.
Hope to see you all next season.
Marty Romer
2ND GRADE CAPTAINS REPORT
The year has been a mixed one for the 2nds. We were happy to move players into the side, and all players enjoy
the opportunity of stepping up into 1sts. Over the year we had 6 players enjoy competing in the top grade.
Hopefully some more of us can keep pressure on the 1sts and force our way into the side permanently.
We used 28 players in the team this year, which in some way explains the lack of cohesion in the batting unit.
This is indicative of a bright future for the club as more of the juniors and lower graded players come through.
I would like to mention Jon Philliponi, a 14 year old junior who turned up to almost every game, and filled in for
us whenever he was asked. I would also like to thank the rest of the juniors that filled in, and would offer a little
bit of advice to Cameron Dantier, the 15 year old who I believe has a bright future in cricket. Cameron, some
good shots will not make it to the boundary, you will have to run sometimes….
nd
Unfortunately there is not a good story to tell on the performance of the team, we ran 2 last, beating Penrith
RSL into last place, who forfeited the season. As mentioned, the batting unit did not perform, though catching
and general ground fielding was good this year. The bowling was very good, with the team dismissing the
opposition for less than 150 four times.
A lack of wins, a lack of coin toss wins, and a couple of unlucky results due to rain took some of the fun away,
though overall we enjoyed the season. We look forward to being more competitive next year.

4TH GRADE CAPTAINS REPORT
At the start of the season, I was asked to take on the role as 4th Grade Captain. I was quite pleased to accept
the offer, after playing 13 years with this Club, 5 of them in seniors.
Emu Plains Cricket Club
Season Report 2006/2007
Page 12
The year was a great challenge for all of us, for myself it took me about 3 games into the season, before I
stopped looking around for the Captain's advice, not realising that I was supposed to be the one making all the
decisions.
When I looked at the team, I was given at the start of the year, I had only played less than a handful of games
with these guys, so for everyone it was a great challenge getting excellent team morale together as quickly as
possible, so we could press ahead & try to have a successful year.
Our 4th Grade team, was built up from the youth of the Club, having nearly half of the boys still attending High
School, I was very happy to have had these young players in the team, they made us all feel like juniors again. It
was such a great mix of age, which brought a lot of energy & experience together, for an enjoyable year.
Our team was a team full of batters & bowlers, but what impressed me the most was our fielding. The fielding
was outstanding, clearly the best in the 4th grade competition, by the end of the season, everyone was on top of
the fielding, taking great catches & run outs, which is where a lot of our success came from.
What we had this year was quite special as a team - everyone got along on a regular basis, we had a laugh, a bit
of sledging, always competitive & were always on the improve.
I could go through the team & write down the list of achievements for each player this season. But to be fair I
believe we all played as well as each other & you can't make these achievements without a full team on the field.
In saying that, I would like to mention the other players from this club, who have filled in for us this season, with
great success.
From 2nd Grade: Chris Longhurst, Greg Bottrill & Luke Stanowski. 6th Grade: Peter Gibson. 8th Grade: Andrew
Luzzi, Shaun Wood, Anthony Morrissey, Nathan Debono, Todd Barron, Daniel Foster, Stuart Ericson & Pat
Cromie. 9th Grade: Billy Ellis & David Adams. U/15's: Tom Romer & Jacob Thomas. U/14's: Ben McGovern
Retiree's: Jamie Large & Pete Hennessey haha, don't worry they'll be back next year! Probably umpiring instead
of playing after their 1 game 1 duck efforts (clearly a joke boys).
Thanks heaps to all these players from the grades above, for filling in when we really needed players, well
appreciated. To the Committee, thanks for the support all year, not only for the club in general, but in also giving
myself a start as captain of 4th grade & supporting my decisions throughout the year. Thanks to the supporters,
who came & watched us week in week out - it really does make a difference having people their cheering us on.
And thanks to Mat Hunt, our vice captain, you played an important role. Mate, thanks for the support & advice,
also for putting up our results onto the computer every week.
To the boys, you all should be really proud of yourselves, we really gave this competition a shake, although we
didn’t make the finals, I know for a fact the teams who did make it were glad we weren't part of it. We just
needed a couple more rounds & we would have been sweet.
All the best for the off season, I hope to see you all back next year, playing for the Emu's of course, thanks for
your support & well played!
Patrick Anderson
6TH GRADE CAPTAINS REPORT
This season for 6th grade had many challenges. We are mostly a young side with a few exceptions (Richard and
Stan). We also had three new players in Brett, Jack and Marc. We started the year poorly with a loss but it all
went up hill from there.
A few highlights with the bat were Joel Guilfoyle's 66,119 and a handful of 30's & 40's. Also he averaged 41.7.
Stephen Sargent's 48* and a few 20's helped the team. Sir Slogger Sam Weymouth's effort doesn’t come
undone with plenty of spins and trips while at the crease. He did manage to block but he got quick runs. Daniel
Ross hit a few sixes and some quick runs. I did alright as well with a 93 (closest I’ll ever get to the ton). I got 7
the next game so there’s my ton. I also hit 53 and lots of 20's & 30's.
Now for the bowling. Firstly I want to say we have 6 full time bowlers. By the end of the season only 4 bowled all
the time. Brett and Jason bowled and we needed them most and it counted. Dan, Matt (Squeek) and Steve all
got 5 fa's (Dan-1, Matt-2 and Sarge-2). The boys all got hammered during the season but all bounced back.
Now to wrap this up, a quick thanks to all the boys that filled in for us - Tonks, Woods, Little Woods, John, Tom.
Cheers fellas. Now to end the end of season report. We managed to hold 3rd place even after a 9 point penalty
for playing Alan MacGillivray. We were washed out by the council not the rain.
So thanks and this is the 6th grade team - Joel "Head" Guilfoyle (Captain), Peter "Gibbo" Gibson (Captain most
of the time), Brett "Bman" Eichorn, Jack "Softie" Checkley, Jason "Jas" Guilfoyle, Stan "The Man" Duckett, Sam
"Mullet" Weymouth, Stephen "Sarge" Sargent, Matthew "Squeek" Sutherland, Ryan "Gimp" Graham, Daniel
"Rossi" Ross and finally Richard "Rich" Barnes.
Cheers and till next season.

7TH GRADE CAPTAINS REPORT
th
2006/2007 has been a great year for 7 Grade. Although we lost the Grand Final after having the opposition on
th
toast at 5/24, it has been a year that I personally will not forget. Every one of the 7 grade players should hold
there head high and be proud of the achievements we had this season.
th
There have been many highlights for the 7 grade team this season. It is hard to narrow it down to a few, so
apologies to the boys who think their highlights are better than the ones I am about to mention. Just remember, I
only have 1 page to do this in!!
Josh Wood’s 100 not out was a definite highlight for our team. At 14, Josh is our youngest player and has a big
future in cricket.
Chris Tonks batting average of 98.75 is by far the highest in the grade. Chris also holds the highest average for
the Club.
I had an OK year myself this year with not one, but two centuries to my name. The highlight for me was definitely
nd
sharing a 2 wicket partnership of 213 runs with my son Chris. The partnership is the highest for the grade and
the club, so I am pretty proud of that one.
rd
Our team also holds the highest 3 wicket partnership of the club with 134 from Thomas Jackett and myself.
Jackett’s 41 was a definite highlight of the year. Jackett stealing the page out of the scorebook for keep sake
was also pretty memorable.
Not to be outdone, Dave Lee’s quick fire 21 off a handful of balls was an exciting innings with an exceptional
finish. Dave finished by blocking the last ball of the innings to preserve his average. The team scored an
impressive 327 runs for the match.
th
We also have the equal highest 5 wicket partnership for the club with 95 from Mat Tonks and Shane
McPherson. Shane had a great year. He took the wicky gloves for the first time ever and had a great year behind
the wickets with 7 catches for the season.
Our bowling highlights are definitely dominated by Mat Tonks. With the most wickets for the Grade, Mat took 40
wickets this season including two 5 wicket innings and a 10 wicket haul in a match. Chris Tonks, James Wood
and myself also had 5 wicket innings this season. Jake Sultana took a 4/14, which was pretty impressive
considering he has trouble hitting the pitch when he is bowling (just kidding Jake).
th
7 grade have a father/son (Anthony and Chris) combination in the top 6 batting stats for the club. We also have
an uncle/ nephew (Matthew and Chris) combination in the top 6 for bowling.
A big thanks goes to a few of the younger players who helped fill in this year. Cameron Dantier, Patrick Cromie,
Luke Fitzpatrick, Anthony Morrissey and Bill Watson all did exceptionally well for us this year. Luke’s 4/26 in a
washed out game was one of the best bowling performances of the season.
th
It has been an honour to be associated with the 7 grade team. We won 10 games, drew 2 and lost only 2 to
th
finish Minor Premiers for 7 Grade. Unfortunately this year we did not win the Grand Final, but hopefully next
year will be able to stick together and bring home the trophy.
th
A big thanks to all the 7 grade players – Jake (Skipper) Sultana, James (JW) Wood, Josh (Sledgeman) Wood,
Kyle (River 8) Siczak, Mat (Bluey) Tonks, Chris (Statsman) Tonks, Dylan (Dildo) Reeder, Regan (Reg Regan)
Rist, Brett (Who is the skipper of this team) Daley, Dave (Brett’s older than me) Lees, Shane (Golden Gloves)
Mcpherson and Thomas (I’m never on time) Jackett.
I’ll see you all next year.
th
Anthony Tonks (off-field captain 7 grade)
8TH GRADE CAPTAINS REPORT
th
This year has been a great one for the 8 Grade Emu side.
We set ourselves some goals at the beginning of the year and managed to meet most of them. We had a great
core group of players and played with a team spirit that I hadn’t seen or been part of before.
We had a few standout players and milestones, Shane Richards, scoring the first 100 of the year, and later
following it up with an incredible 9 wicket innings (9/28). Todd Barron scored an unbeaten 150, bringing up both
his 100 and 150 with 6’s. Todd also made the most runs of any grade, 545. We hold the club record for the year,
opening partnership of 0/153, held by T. Barron and A. Luzzi, and we have players in the ten for Batting Bowling
th
and Fielding in the district for 8 grade. I personally had my best year, with 32 wickets and 350 runs. This was
the story for many players, who had a personal best year.
We also had three 16 year olds in the team and they fitted very well into the team, getting their first taste of
senior’s cricket.
As a team we shared a few BBQ’s after games, we also spent many happy hours after the games at the Emu
Sports club. That’s is the essence of our year, not only were we happy to play on the field together, but all
players, partners and families were and are happy to socialize out of game time.
Emu Plains Cricket Club
Season Report 2006/2007
Page 14
At the end of the year we won three of our last four games, with the last game ending in a draw because of rain,
th
even though we were on top. To finish 5 is the best result I’ve been involved in with the club and I couldn’t be
prouder of the way the team conducted themselves on and off the park. I hope to lead the same group of guys
next year and with any luck get ourselves a flag.
th
As we say in 8 grade,
Go The Bird!
Andrew “Lou” Luzzi
9TH GRADE CAPTAINS REPORT
th
This year was always going to an interesting one for the 9 grade side. Many of our players had not played any
cricket since the end of juniors, many had never played cricket before! We went into the start of the season not
knowing how strong the competition would be and not quite knowing how we would fare. We were pleasantly
surprised how quickly we found our feet and were able to be competitive.
We had quite a few standout players this year. While all the guys obviously gave 100% every week there were a
core group of players that made major contributions every single week. Guys like Stace Parker, Dean Franshaw,
Billy Ellis and Dave Adams were all standouts this year.
There were many highlights throughout the season, a couple of them were: Stace Parker’s 139 against Henry
Lawson on a stinking hot afternoon, Billy Ellis with 7 wickets in the first innings and 3 in the second for a 10
wicket match and Dave Adam’s 5 wicket haul. Dean Franshaw’s bowling efforts in the last few weeks of the
season was simply outstanding. He took 16 wickets in just 3 weeks. Josh Alderson’s brilliant runout against
Panthers and Gareth McKeown’s catch that just had to be seen to believed (had to include this one or he would
have annoyed me non stop!!!) were other memorable moments.
We entered the team this year to go in and have some fun – have a few drinks after the games etc. But it didn’t
take long for all of our competitive sides to rear their heads and we started playing a little more seriously. Still
there were plenty of drinks either at the ground after the game or the pub afterwards.
A lot of laughs were shared during the season – mostly at our feeble batting order. It didn’t seem to fire too many
times, a classic example of this was losing 9 wickets for no more than about 35 runs taking us from a
commanding position in the match to well losing it. While we couldn’t put many runs on the board we did have
one of the better bowling attacks with Dean Franshaw and Billy Ellis saving us from complete embarrassment a
couple of times.
Special note has to go to a couple of the guys who improved out of sight this year. Gareth McKeown had played
only 1 season of cricket when aged about 11. He started the season rather shaky in some departments but grew
in confidence to be an excellent first change bowler and a devastating lower order batter. After playing state level
softball as a catcher Mitch Lalor finally got the hang of a bouncing ball and did a great job behind the stumps.
At the end of the season we had managed to climb into third position on the ladder after hitting our straps in the
previous few games before the semi-finals. It was a very disappointing end to the season with not being able to
have a crack at making the grand final in our first year. But that is all over now and we’ve something to aim for
next year!
Thanks to all the boys in 9th grade – I had a great year with a lot of laughs along the way.

MILO HAVE-A-GO
The MILO Have-A-Go programme was of mixed success this year. Disappointingly, Have-A-Go numbers were at
their lowest in many years – 30 players (down from 66 the pervious year). This reduction was due to our failure
to send a mail out to previous players, instead relying on school newsletters and word of mouth for advertising.
On the positive side, we gained the services of Geoff Sullivan as the Have-A -Go coordinator. Geoff is a qualified
coach, & has many years coaching experience. Thank you to Geoff for your excellent and professional coaching
this year. Thanks also to a handful of parents who assisted Geoff regularly, allowing things to run smoothly.
The children who participated seemed to really enjoy the Have-A-Go experience, and most indicated they would
return next season. Thank you to Martin Bowerman & Will Watson who put on a BBQ for the parents & kids at
the end of the season.

UNDER 8 OPEN DIVISION
Coaching the under 8’s this season has been a very fulfilling and enjoyable experience from my perspective. All
players came into the side with varying degrees of skill and experience. Some had taken part in MILO Have-AGo in previous years while others had only experienced games in the backyard or at the beach.
We started the first game with only four players and won the match in convincing manner. We picked up five
more players in the next few weeks and developed into a very competitive and difficult team to beat.
In all 18 matches our team was only beaten twice by a side scoring more runs. Although this is not how the
results are formulated as wickets taken are divided into total scored. On this premise the side won 10 and lost 8.
It was very pleasing to see each player develop skill levels in batting, bowling, and fielding but also gain
confidence in wearing all the protective gear required in a game of cricket. We were very good at scoring runs
and one special feature the side developed was their running between wickets. We scored more than 100 runs
in at least 4 matches - a very good effort in 16-over matches. Each player gained skill and confidence as the
season progressed. Following are the special attributes each player developed over the season.
Jack Ashcroft – Jack could be relied upon to give 100% every game. His highest score was 3 not out and best
bowling performance was 1/9. Jack improved his skills markedly throughout the season. Bowling was very good
by the end of the competition and was unlucky not to have taken a few more wickets (the whole team needs to
improve catching skills).
Kaleb Fairbrother – great striker of the ball scored 119 off the bat, with a highest score of 20, and he took 5
wickets and had two run outs (outstanding throwing arm), with best bowling 2/6. Kaleb is still improving with
consistency and accuracy with his bowling. Kaleb has natural talent and is a player of the future for the club.
Ben McCarthy – our opening batsman who has developed outstanding defensive techniques. Scored 112 runs
with a highest score of 18. Capable of playing strongly in front and behind the wicket. Bowling was erratic at
times but by the last few matches was bowling an excellent line and length at pace. Best bowling performance
was 1/2. Nearly took two fantastic catches and is a very talented player who will improve in years to come.
Samantha Arnold – developed into a very formidable bowler taking 14 wickets at an average of 7.79. Best
performance 2/7. Scored 124 off the bat and was outstanding running between the wickets, had some excellent
partnerships making many more runs because of her anticipation and how well she could read the game. One
catch and one run out. Highest score 20 not out, another player of the future.
Vinod Karunasinghe - great ball striker who was only out four times in 16 innings, scoring 82 at an average of
20. Vinod’s bowling developed through the season - best bowling 1/2 and he took a total of 4 wickets during the
season. One catch and one run out - his bowling technique improved markedly – he has the speed and his next
step is improving his consistency with line and length.
Laurie Ellis – was one of the original four players at the start of the season. Had some success early in the
season opening the batting with Ben, setting up the team with some good scores. His highest score was 8 not
out and best bowling 1/5. Showed some good skills and initiative as wicketkeeper late in the season. Laurie has
a happy and carefree attitude and is a positive team member.
Oliver Masters – season started with a game on the beach at Mollymook where the coach spotted his potential.
He developed into a great team player who understood how to get involved in the match. His bowling improved
dramatically and by the end of the competition he could be relied upon to send down six accurate deliveries best performance 1/11. His highest score with the bat was 4. I see him being capable of bamboozling many
batsmen with his bowling next year. Most improved player in the team.
Alex Mathison - an excellent team player, his best bowling performance was 1/5, and he had one run out and a
top score of 12 not out. Alex was very good running between wickets and he was a big part of many good
partnerships during the season. Alex was a great listener at training and greatly improved all his skills as the
season progressed. A great team player who gained more confidence with each match.
Nicholas Arnold – An outstanding season, amassing 233 runs. Genuine quick bowler taking 11 wickets
(including a hat trick), three catches, and four run outs. Highest score of 27 not out. A player to watch out for in
the future.
In conclusion I would like to thank Avril Fairbrother, the team manager, who scored on many occasions with no
experience of scoring previously, to Billy Ellis who scored for many games along with Steve Masters who
entered all the information into ResultsVault. A big thanks to all the dads and mums who assisted at matches or
came along to support the side.

It took a few games to get our bowling together, but with help from senior players - Patrick Anderson, Scott
Waterhouse & Shaun Wood - all the boys took wickets with run outs, catching, stumpings & bowling them out.
As time went on they started to jell as a team. At the end of the season we missed a couple of players through
sickness, families moving, but the rest of the boys held the team together, all improving in each match.
I hope all the boys come back next season & have some more fun. It has been a pleasure to coach these boys &
I would like to thank the EPCC committee & the parents for their support. Also to Shaun Wood, Daniel Carr,
Patrick Anderson & Scott Waterhouse for helping with coaching & umpiring.
Until next season, all the best.

Although the team’s efforts didn’t translate into many wins, the players can be proud of the way that they
competed strongly and improved their skills during the season.
All of the team excelled during the season with several players achieving their best scores with the bat, nine
players recording innings of double figures, eleven players taking wickets during the season, and eleven players
effecting catches or runouts.
Some of the individual performances were outstanding, but as cricket is a team game, I’d like to make particular
mention of the way that a couple of our players competed strongly in spite of physical pain. I’d also like to
commend several of the team on the way in which they displayed on-field leadership and encouragement.
Boys, if you can build on this, several of you will become outstanding cricketers. If you can contribute to a team,
the individual results will take care of themselves – the stronger a team unit is, the easier it becomes to make
runs and take wickets.
It has been a privilege to see our players develop during the season both as individuals and in the way that they
relate to each other and compete as a team. I am looking forward to seeing them improve further and become
an outstanding team.
Billy Ellis, Coach
The 2006/07 season saw the U/10’s blending together a mix of last years U/9, a few who were eligible to
remained from the last years U/10’s and a couple of new players to the team and a new coach.
Although we may not have won many games during the season, I would have to say the season was a
successful one. The boys were enthusiastic, keen and never gave up. (Isn’t that a sign of a winning team!)
Of the 17 games played (there was one bye and one wash out) we won three. However, there was at least six or
seven games where we lost by only 10-15 runs.
There were some wonderful achievements during the year:
•
In the batting department 8 players scored more then 50 runs during the season, two exceeded 100 and
two others finished in the 90’s;
•
As for the bowling, 11 players took wickets during the season and five of these took 5 wickets or more;
•
Our fielding was good all year and this resulted in 17 catches being taken and we affected 19 run outs.
Great effort.
All players contributed to the team’s performance during the year and whilst some may have improved faster
than others during the year, with training and commitment all could develop into good cricketers. As a great
sportsman once said;
“One important key to success is self confidence. An important key to self confidence is preparation”. Arthur Ash
Finally we would like to thank all the parents for their support assistance during the season, it was very much
appreciated.
Wishing everyone a very successful 2007/08 season.

UNDER 11 DIVISION 2
Firstly, I would like to thank all the boys for their efforts this year. We had a very successful year only losing in
three games during the season, a terrific effort considering we only played 1 game with a full 11 players. We
finished runners up in the one-day final, were semi-finalists in the competition & were desperately unlucky to
have rain end our season. I was extremely proud of the way you all got in and gave it your best shot in every
game. The most pleasing part from the coach’s point of view was seeing that everyone contributed in every part
of the game, as seen by the fact that everyone took a catch, everyone shared in a partnership of 20 or more
when batting, and everyone took wickets - that is a sign of a good team and I’m sure that all the boys will
Emu Plains Cricket Club

Page 19
continue to improve next year as well. Also I would like to thank the parents and supporters, your help was
amazing and made my job that much easier throughout the season. Enjoy your off season, it was a pleasure
coaching you - well done boys.
Cameron Johnson: A terrific season and the success was fully deserved because this is a young man who
nd
rd
works very hard on his game. Finished in the top ten performers in the division for batting (2 best average & 3
th
th
most runs) and bowling (9 most wickets and 6 best average, not including his one-day final bowling). A
genuine all rounder and one of the most talented young players I have seen. Well done Cam, keep up the work
and the results will continue. Also took 4/24 in the 1-day final.
th
Matthew Hughes: In his first season, Matthew has done fantastically well. Finishing 9 in most runs for the
th
th
division and 6 on averages and 4 in the bowling averages. Also hit double figures for catches with an even 10
nd
(equal 2 in the district). Blessed with a great technique and terrific enthusiasm. If you continue to work hard,
and enjoy yourself you will continue to improve.
Jack Waterhouse : Our teams ENFORCER, whether it is with bat or ball, Jack does everything at 1000 mph. Is
blessed with tremendous pace when bowling & is beginning to learn to harness it, which will see him take a lot of
wickets in coming seasons. Said at our first training “I’m not much of a batter”, but put a lot of work into it and
th
was rewarded with the teams first ever 50. Jack, 37 (6 in the district), is a pretty good average and nearly 150
runs is pretty good for a guy who didn’t think he could bat! If you learn to focus & concentrate on training as
much as you do in games, you will improve rapidly. I for one would love to see how good you can really be.
Mitchell Peachey: Honestly the most frustrating part of coaching Mitchell is he has the talent to be the Adam
Gilchrist of this competition, he just hasn’t realised it yet. Started the season in tremendous form with the gloves,
did have a slightly disappointing finish to the season however. My advice to you Peach, is lose that helmet you
started wearing halfway through. You have the ability, you are one of the best catchers of the ball I have
coached. As a fellow keeper, if you watch the ball & get yourself into the right position you don’t need a helmet,
you won’t get hit, & you are good enough to not need it. Patience will see your batting take that next step from
making 10’s & 20’s to making 50’s & 100’s. Did hit the teams only 6 for the year, in a Peachey special first over,
first ball, coach’s advice is to be patient, nothing silly, bang 4. Ok nothing silly, concentrate on the next ball, bang
6. Well that’s just how he plays. Also took 8 catches as keeper, the most in the division.
Clayton Chantler: Another first year player who is coming along very nicely. Very solid technique with bat & ball
and a regular contributor with both. Works hard on his game and has great enthusiasm for the game and I am
sure will really blossom into a fine cricketer in the next few years. Clay, learn how to score faster, without trying
to slog, because this is the one weakness in your batting but it was a very good first year. Great work Clay!
Trent Day: A very under-rated cricketer. Bowls a very good line & length, and is difficult to score off as our
opposition found out. A very good defensive batsman with some fine leg side shots, who got us out of trouble on
quite a few occasions. Trent, if you learn to play the drives with a straight bat & develop your off side shots, we
will see you bat regularly in the top 6 of most teams. During the off season, really work hard on your fielding - it is
the one area where your weaknesses get exposed.
Keegan Jones: Another very talented young man, he can bowl fast-medium or leg spin, can bat, & is an
rd
excellent fielder. Took 20 wickets in the season (3 in the district, had the best strike rate of all bowlers in the
th
district & finished 5 on the averages). Confidence with the bat took a bit of a battering mid season, but fought
very bravely to put on 50 with Jack against minor premiers St Marys in our dramatic tie. He has the ticker & has
a decent technique, don’t worry too much about your scores at the moment. With age and a bit of a growth spurt
this is sure to improve. Also wins fashion statement award for dying his hair bright blonde mid season. Well done
mate, a top season.
Jacob Landers: A developing leg spinner and batsman, the only thing that holds Jacob back is his own lack of
confidence. His bowling is as good as any first year leg spinner I have seen and with hard work I’m sure could be
representative standard within the next 2-3 years. A solid, patient batsman who, when he believes in himself and
allows himself to play the attacking shots, will find he is a very capable batsman and I’m sure will play some very
good and important innings. A good start Jacob, JUST BELIEVE IN YOURSELF MATE. In the one-day final took
the best catch by a young cricketer I have ever seen, it really was that good, easily catch of the year.
William Robertson: Joined the team midway through the year and really threw himself into the game. It was a
steep learning curve and a tough ask but William has done very well. Regularly chips in with an important wicket
or a catch and even achieved his life long ambition to hit a boundary. Will improve a lot next season having now
learnt the game and how to improve on it. Well done Will, keep enjoying yourself.
Thomas Watkins: A young man whose stats do not tell the whole story. Is always one of the first to training and
works very hard on his game. At the start of the year really didn’t have a technique at all in either batting or
bowling. Through sheer hard work and determination improved his game remarkably. Season highlights include
taking the first wicket in the one-day final (an excellent caught and bowled) against a fine player and batting for
30 overs against eventual champions St Clair, and sharing in some fine partnerships which ultimately won us
that game. Keep up the hard work Tom, the rewards will follow mate.

UNDER 13 DIVISION 2
The Emu Plains Under 13 Cricket team has had an outstanding year. They were minor premiers, but more
importantly, their on-field and off-field behaviour, and sportsmanship, was outstanding. As a team these boys,
and their parents, are a credit to the club. As coach, I am proud of all of the boys. They played their best as a
team and individually. I could not have asked for more.
It was pleasing to see the genuine improvement in all players from last year to this year. The skill level has
improved this season so much so that an unprecedented seven players were nominated for representative
positions. We welcomed three new faces this season, Matt Branch, Caine Waterhouse and Zac Butler, who all
added greatly to the team, and I hope they will all come back next season and build on what they learnt this
season.
I would like to congratulate all players, each player is valued and all have contributed to our fabulous result.
Special mention must be given to Josh Dowd, however, on his exemplary season as team captain. Josh led the
boys with the bat and with his fielding, inspiring them to lift in every game, his highest score was 65, with a
massive year total of 288 runs and 15 wickets. Other highlights were Joe Master’s 5 wickets for 15 off 5 overs,
(which included one maiden); Connor Finemore’s and Sam Devlin’s last stand partnership of 49 (in which Sam
scored his first 4), Fielding efforts from Zac Butler (2 great catches in one game); Hugh Arnold’s great catch in
the finals; Jake Robson’s 36 with 6 fours against RSL Gold, Luke Crebbin’s first 50 against RSL Blue and
partnership of 92 with Josh and 20 wickets overall, Jarrod’s outstanding catches and a high of 65, Jon-Luc
Griffith opening bowling against RSL Blue taking 2 wickets; James Devlin’s match turning 46 against RSL Gold;
Jack Minney’s grandfinal wicket best of 1 for 9, Matthew Branch’s 29 against St Mary’s and 14 wickets for the
year; the team effort of an outright win against Springwood, and many more; but not to forget Caine’s first ever
2 runs (almost got that $100 off his dad).
The team has supported one another throughout the year in an exceptionally positive way. The comradeship
between the parents has provided the highest of examples for the boys to follow. Each week Liz Dowd’s
management of the team has been outstanding. Her newsletters and organization are second to none. The
efforts of Paul and Liz Devlin, Liz Dowd and Greg Finemore in scoring have been invaluable and greatly
appreciated. Geoff Griffiths, Steve Master’s and others barbequed like Jamie Oliver week after week (but
thankfully weren’t Naked Chefs!). The umpiring efforts of Paul Dowd, Steve Butler, Steve Masters and Paul
Devlin were also extremely valuable. Louise Arnold managed the drinks for the team superbly, raising funds to
support our end of season celebrations. There is a lovely feeling about this group of people that is reflected in
the boys’ attitude and performance.
The team were winners all season, the finals were only one game, the season belonged to these boys. Well
done!
Tony Robson, Coach
UNDER 14 DIVISION 2
The season started out well, winning our first game with the help of the catch of the year by Nathan
Christensen. We lost our second game due to count back, but the batting display by Liam Hausfeld and Ben
McGovern gave us a fighting chance.
The next few games we won. Karina Gray got her season best of 3/3 and Jon Philliponi realised he had the
ability to hit four fifty’s in four games straight. Scott Perkins also got his personal best of 65. A game against St
Marys proved to be exciting when we hit 8/434, Jon hitting 95, Ben McGovern 130 and Liam 139 n.o.
Making it to the grand final, after losing a very close game the game before, was an achievement. However,
winning it seemed too much of a challenge. Captain courageous Matthew Large did all he could, hitting sixteen
off the last over and getting a couple of sensational wickets at incredible speed. A run out by Ben Thomas and
an opening spell of bowling by Josh Hoole and Matt Herring gave us a good chance to win, but unfortunately
we couldn’t hang on to the win over St Marys.
The next highlight was against Cranebrook, sensational bowling by Matt Herring with 4/23 (10 overs), Matt
Large 2/6 (7 overs) and a Classic Catch from James Hewitt helped keep the total to 200. The next week it was
a partnership between Jon Philliponi (76) and Michael Todd (50 no) of 104 helped secure the win & a place in
the final.
Losing one game against St Clair didn’t stop us getting the Minor Premiership for the season. This became very
handy as the semi final was washed out, but the big question was, who was to come second in the comp? It was
a tight race and Cranebrook needed to win outright to go from fifth to second, and would you believe it…
Grand Final Day Vs Cranebrook.
The skipper for the season, a few weeks before the game, decided that dislocating his shoulder, in a … lets call
it a fact finding mission to see whether Michael Todd was as breakable as we all thought, was more important
than playing in a grand final! The fill in skipper, Jon Philliponi, won the toss & sends them into bat. Richie
Benaud would ‘keel over’ if he heard that, but it was definitely the right decision, Matt Herring opened the
bowling and was unlucky not to snatch a wicket but was only hit for two runs off his five overs. Scott Perkins
Emu Plains Cricket Club
Season Report 2006/2007
Page 21
bowled a few screamers picking up a very handy wicket, an awesome catch from James Hewitt and sensational
keeping from Matt Suttcliffe were other highlights. It was the bowling of Michael Todd and the direct hit run out
he produced to get their best batsman out for 4, was what kept their total to a dismal 46. Toddy picked up 3
wickets for very few runs making it impossible for them to recover. Mick Lo Cascio sealed Cranebrook’s inning
with getting the last batsman out without conceding any runs.
We ended the first day 2/43 with Nathan Christensen and Jon Philliponi ready for the next day. Nathan hit the
winning runs and Jon declared after he hit his fifth fifty for the season and we were 2/110. Cranebrook agreed
there was no reason for a second innings.
All in all, our season was a successful one. Jake Cromie bowled very well for us, picking up well needed wickets,
and also added something else to the team, which I believe is most important of all. That is team spirit. I truly
believe it was the key to our successful season.
Special thanks to my managers John & Jenny Lo Cascio. Your help has been invaluable this season. To my
assistant coach Andrew Luzzi, your positive attitude, your love of cricket and your knowledge of the sport
immensely contributed to our success. You also helped me avoid many panic attacks during the season.
Ready for 2007-2008.
Chris Longhurst, Coach
UNDER 15 DIVISION 1
Our boys once again competed in the division 1 competition, remaining competitive in most games played. They
remained positive and seemed to enjoy playing cricket no matter what the outcome of the game. The boys are
great ambassadors for enjoying the sport they chose to play and do not take things too seriously. This can give
their coach a fair amount of grief at times (and their parents), but the boys seemed to enjoy that as well.
Some of the boys achieved some outstanding results during the season: Cameron Dantier scoring the team’s
th
first century batting through the innings and also ending 4 for the season in most runs across the district; Josh
Neal claiming 5 wickets in an innings in his first year of cricket; and Luke Fitzpatrick also claiming 5 wickets in an
innings as well as ending up equal first for most wickets in the season across the district. Cameron, Luke and
Tom Romer also played representative cricket for Penrith.
Thank you to Fay Love for looking after the results each week, and to all the parents for helping out with the
scoring and setting up the ground each week. Thank you Paul Fitzpatrick and the Emu Plains Committee for
your support as well. Also thank you to the U/14 players who came up and helped us out when we were short.
Last but not least, thank you to the boys for your efforts during the season; I hope to see you all next year for our
final year as juniors.
