Identification of 2 issues:
Lack of quality umpires emerging at national
level
Insufficient female umpires officiating in
hockey
Attracting junior umpires into the
sport
•
Commitment to having junior umpires
officiating at junior age group tournaments
Domestic tournament v age of
officials

14 - 16 year old officials
16 - 18 years
19 - 21 years
20 - 25 years
• In 2009, over 250 umpires between the ages of 14 and
21, umpired at national tournaments
Attracting female officials
• For all Hockey NZ flagship tournaments from U13
through to the National Hockey League the umpire
appointments are gender specific
Additional considerations
• There needs to be adequate support, coaching,
assessment and reporting to validate the process
• Together with the 250 umpires, were 40+ technical
delegates and umpire managers
• An entry point is needed for ‘late bloomers’
• Eg Championship tournaments, school
tournaments and masters
Success stories
•
•
Its not coincidence that trained officials end up
‘head boy or girl.’
