•
2 year course (linear no AS)
Course divided into 4 components
3 theory areas worth a total of 70%
1 practical area worth a total of 30%
3 exams to sit at end of 2 years on theory areas
Theory or exam bit

•
Physiological, Psychological and Socio-cultural
30%, 20%, 20%
2 hour exam, 1 hour exam, 1 hour exam
Sections A, B and C in each exam
Final section C is either a 20 or 10 mark Q
Practical or NEA
• 2 parts
• Part 1 - Performance or coaching in 1 activity from a
strict list provided by the DfE
• Part 2 - The Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for
Improvement (EAPI) of a sport or activity from the
approved DfE list
• This does not have to be the same sport or activity that
was undertaken in part 1, although it can be.
• You will identify and justify the major area of weakness
within the performance to prioritise for improvement
and will propose a long term (2-3 months) development
plan to improve the area of performance identified.

Summer IS
• Set you some research on each of the 3 theory
areas
Today…
• Psychology of sport…GS area 
• Theme for today…Recent England performance!
• In June 2016 2 contrasting things have occurred in 2
of England’s national sports
1. Roy Hodgson’s side failed to qualify for the last 8 of
Euro 2016
2. Eddie Jones’s side historically whitewashed Australia
on their turf in the series down under
As a sport psychologist you now need to ask
yourself…why?
Some underlying theory - attitudes
• An attitude is…a learned behaviour linked to
personality and known to influence how we
respond in different situations
• An attitude is said to be made up of 3
components…
What you think – cognitive
What you feel – affective
What you do – behavioural
Together these are known as CAB statements
Example from GS (sporting and nonsporting)
• GS thinks she leads a healthy lifestyle (belief)
• GS feels happy when she exercises (emotion)
• GS therefore exercises regularly (behaviour)
ALL OF THESE CAB STATEMENTS AGREE 
• GS thinks her nails look nicer when long and
painted nice (belief)
• GS enjoys having her nails done (emotion)
• GS sometimes bites her nails so can’t get them
done  (behaviour)
ALL OF THESE CAB STATEMENTS DON’T AGREE 
Write down 2 CAB statements of your
own (1 agreeable and 1 not?!?)
What do we call it when CAB don’t
agree?
• The term used is cognitive dissonance
• We need to use theories to change attitudes
• Theories include cognitive dissonance theory
and persuasive communication theory
Before the start of Roy’s tournament or Eddie’s
series what do you think their CAB statements
would have said?
What do I think? (belief)
What do I feel? (emotion)
What do I do? (behaviour)
Findings…
•
•
•
•
Did you have Roy’s CAB statements as agreeing?
Did you have Eddie’s CAB statements as agreeing?
If not why not?
What factors might have influenced their
attitude?
• What do you think the teams would have said
about their managers attitudes?
• Would they have agreed with what you said?
Following the success/failure of these
two…
• There are different reasons for their
success/failure
• Have a go at listing some of them (don’t hold
back!)
• We are then going to use more psychological
theory to categorise them
Some underlying theory - attribution
• Attribution is…reasons given by performers for
success or failure
• Attribution theory aims to help us understand
when and why we should attribute our
success and failure to different things
Example from GS (sporting and nonsporting)
• The year 11 Netball Team qualified and performed amazingly
alongside predominantly private schools from all over
Worcestershire on 12th November 2015 because of all of the hard
work they have put in over the years and because of the
combined talent and ability of them as a group. It helps that they
get along so well and work so hard for each other!
• The reason why Miss Steward
cannot plait her own hair is
because it is just too hard to
do to yourself! I try and I try
really hard and I have spent
lots of time trying but I just
can’t do it grr!!!
• Of the reasons you gave for
team Eddie’s success and Team
Roy’s failure place them now
into 1 of these 4 boxes
Attribution
theory
Findings…
• Where did Eddie’s main reasons for success go?
• Where did Roy’s main reasons for failure go?
To preserve the dignity/confidence/selfesteem/pride of their teams…what box(es) should
they as managers focus the success/failure into?
•
Example from GS
(sporting and nonGS completed the half marathon in 2
sporting)
hour 3 min and 33 seconds because
she had trained hard and got up to
doing 10 miles with her friend
beforehand! She was determined that
her challenge 30 was not going to beat
her and she knew she had trained hard
to get around the 2 hour mark!
• GS did put petrol in a diesel car but she
was not to blame. It was pure bad luck
that she would go to the petrol pump
where all of the nozzles were black and
also she was very tired and was not
concentrating as a result.
Some underlying theory - Goal Setting
Goals should be SMARTER:
Set Eddie’s team and the England football team
some goals using the SMARTER principle
• Are they short, medium or long term goals?
• Do they address current areas for
improvement within the team?
• Do they relate to performance quality or just
results?
EXAMPLES
Long term:
Eddie’s team to win 2019 Rugby World Cup
England football to reach quarter finals of Football World Cup
Medium term:
Eddie’s team to repeat 6 Nations Grand Slam of 2016
England football to qualify for 2018 Football World Cup
Short term:
Eddie’s team to celebrate recent success and focus on maintaining and
developing fitness during pre-season with their club. An immediate focus will
need to be looking at how to use this momentum to strengthen their
solidarity as the top team in the Northern Hemisphere and how to build more
exciting ball carrying passages of play into their rugby.
England football to overcome the embarrassment of Euro 2016 and focus on
appointing a new manager to take the team in a new direction. An immediate
focus will need to be looking at how individuals/the team behave during big
games…embracing the challenge rather than choking under the pressure.
Plenary - ARQs
Active Recall Questions
Based on what you have learned in today’s
lesson set yourself 5 questions relating to the 2
areas of psychological theory you have studied
today.
