2013
SUMMER
NEWSLETTER
HELLO! Thought it was safe to forget about
hockey for a few months? Well think again!
We wanted to give everyone a quick roundup of last season and more importantly to let
you know some key dates and details of
what’s happening over the summer months.
Round up of last season
We’ve ended this season in a great position as a club.
Congratulations to the 1st team for securing their
place in the North West Div. 2 next season, and to
the 2nd team for holding a very strong position in Div
1 of the LCWHL. This is down to the continued
commitment from everyone involved with GLHC - so a
“big thank you” and lets build on this next season.
We are sad to see some players leaving who are
moving on to University or Overseas and we wish
them well in their respective futures. However we
have a great base of players to ensure we will field 2
teams next season, with strong plans in place to
continue to build on numbers.
The new Committee have been working hard behind
the scenes on a recruitment drive, as this is
absolutely vital for the Club to survive next season.
We are currently on with:
- Organising a CLUB DAY to be held on Sunday 4th
August at PSA to encourage people of all ages who’ve
never played hockey before, not played in a while or
who play for another club to come down and give us
a try. The aim is to build the profile of the club,
create a buzz around playing hockey for Garstang and
for everyone to enjoy a good day out.
This is a really important event for the club and we
need as many players as we can get down on the day
- keep checking the website for more details.
- Networking with UCLAN & local colleges finding points of contact, arranging meetings and
promoting GLHC on their social media pages as a
starting point.

- Continuing to build the South Ribble Hockey
Development Group, and looking to organise a
schools tournament in July.
- Identifying summer events which we can go along
to in order to promote the Club, including Myerscough
College Open Day, Preston College Festival &
Garstang Show - see key dates overleaf. Please can
you get in touch with Sarah Skelton (SJ) ASAP via
text, email or facebook to let her know which events
you are able to help out at – the more people we
have, the stronger the Club’s presence and it means
we can all share the efforts!
- Displaying the newly designed ‘players wanted’
posters around the local area. To achieve maximum
coverage we need your help - the poster is available
to download on facebook and the website.
We are confident that these plans will help the Club
attract a large number of new recruits, but for this to
be successful WE NEED EVERYONE TO PLAY
THEIR PART.
Keep checking the website, your emails and facebook
for more details. Thanks!

Summer league
We have entered a team at Longridge on Wednesday
nights and a team at Preston on Thursday nights.
The 2nd team have priority at Longridge and the 1st
team at Preston. Both leagues are underway but if
haven’t got your name down to play and would like a
run-out then you need to get in touch with Liz Sudell
(Longridge) or Josie Rice (Preston).
Sponsorship
The Committee is finalising details of sponsorship
opportunities for next season with a choice of
packages for different budgets. Attracting sponsors
will help take pressure off the Club’s finances. If you
know of a company that may be interested, or can
think of any local businesses we should approach,
then please get in touch with Sarah.
Pre-Season
AGM
For those who missed the AGM on 13th May here’s a
quick round-up of what was discussed:
- Club finances are fairly healthy due to two very
successful fundraising events – a big thanks
to Debs for all her efforts and to everyone who
came along to support the Club.
- To build on the success of this year it was agreed
to hold 3 social fundraising events next
season – to be decided at the next committee
meeting.
- A new committee was appointed. Sarah (SJ) is
the Club’s new Treasurer, Lyndsey H is the new
Secretary and Josie has a new role in charge of
Communications. Cleone and Caroline are standing
down – thanks to them both for their hard work.
- Annual Subs & Match Fees are staying the
same as last season.
- Thursday night training will change to 6.30 8pm for everyone (partly a cost saving exercise).
Taking on board feedback on this years training,
the plan is for weekly sessions to begin with joint
fitness followed by individual team coaching and
ending with match practice. This will allow both
teams to work on specific elements/drills/set pieces
etc to take into their respective games on the
Saturday.
- The coaches & captains will get together in
the summer to put a plan in place for next
season so that we have a clear and relevant focus
for each team. Dave will continue to coach the 1st
XI, with Charles managing the 2nd XI & coaching
the GKs. The Committee will continue to try and
find an assistant coach to help manage the 2nd XI &
run the 2nd XI training sessions. Dave will
endeavour to work with the 2nd XI whenever
possible.

people as possible over the summer supporting
our various events.
