INSTRUCTIONS

Thank you for your purchase of the GREEN
MACHINE. This is great for a recycling
program but can also be used as a TIME
MACHINE. Make sure to constantly check the
website for ideas and discussions with other
customers. http://www.axtell.com/gm.html
You have received 3 parts to the GREEN MACHINE:
1. Green Box lined with Felt with the Blue Spinner.
2. Orange and Yellow Tube with protected edges.
3. Black Gimmicked Can covered with felt.
(Sound effects for the spinning are available free on the web)
CARE
Care should be taken not to scratch the box or paper tubes. Protect them
during travel. Keep them in the plastic bag. Replacement parts can be
sold if something gets damaged over time.
The audience will never see the black can. This is the Gimmick that does
the magic for you. When inside the felt lined box, the black can will never
be seen by the audience.
Here is a Routine Idea. A video of this can be found on the website
above.
ROUTINE
This is a trash can. (Holding up tube careful not to reveal bottom.)
Everyone has one in their house and probably in every room. How many
of you have one in your room? How many of you have seen one of these
at the park? How many have seen one at the mall? Yes, they are
everywhere. (Set it down)
Here are a few awful facts about trash I was reading in the paper... (take
newspaper and read. You can copy these facts and tape them inside the
paper if you want a cheat sheet)
Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour! (dosomething.org)
Every month Americans throw out enough glass bottles to fill up the
Empire State building!(dosomething.org)

American's throw away enough Aluminum to rebuild all of the US
Commercial air planes 4 times over! (recycling-revolution.com)
The Average American uses 650 pounds of paper every year.
(dosomething.org)
Did you know that when you throw away trash it never goes away? It only
goes somewhere else. It gets hauled away and dumped into a landfill.
So when you throw your trash away like this newspaper... (crumple and
throw away) it doesn't really go away in the trash can.... it's just like you
throw it directly into the Earth. (lift the trash can)
It's as if it doesn't even have a bottom in it (show empty tube, set it down
next to paper).
Now you kids are smarter than that and you know that you shouldn't just
throw all your trash away into the trash cans.... what should you do with
some of it?
Recycle! Right!
Now, this funny looking box is going to represent a recycling facility. It's
even got the recycling arrows on the front of it. I call it my "Green
Machine". (pick it up with gimmick can Set it down next to tube).
I'm going to put our empty trash can into the recycling factory so it is now
a recycling can! (put can over gimmick inside can.)
The box is also empty so our factory is ready for some recycling business.
(lift box off of tube showing it empty, then set it back down over the can.)
Now, let's take this same piece of paper and instead of just throwing it
away in a landfill, we put it into a recycling can. Let's see how good you
are at recycling... Now on the count of three lets all yell really big
“RECYCLE”.... ready 1-2-3... RECYCLE!!!! (Spin the spinner forward)
(look in) Wow look at this! You just recycled our old newspaper into a
new newspaper! You are great recyclers! (Set paper inside case)
Lets try it again... first I'll make sure the box is empty....(show box)....
and the trash can is empty....(show tube, set it down beside).... I like
everything to be really clean. Just like Recycling helps keep the earth
clean.
Okay this time let's try this old aluminum can. Now if we throw it away in a
trash can... (throw away...) remember it never really goes away. It's just
like you threw it right into the ground, like your trash can doesn't have a
bottom in it (lift tube off aluminum can show tube empty.) But now let’s
recycle it instead. (put tube into box)... I'll put this trash can into our Green
Machine and ready? 1 -2-3 RECYCLE!!! (spin spinner & look in) Wow!

You did it again! You turned the old junky can into a brand new can full of
a refreshing drink! That is refreshing to the environment too. Recycling
just ONE aluminum can can save enough energy to run your TV for 3
hours! (recycling-revolution.com) You are really good recyclers! (Set drink inside
case.)
Now, one more time. Let me make sure the Green Machine is empty...
(show box)... and lets make sure our trash can is empty... (show and set it
beside box.) Now let’s do it again. This time let’s use an old plastic
bottle. How many of you have ever thrown away a plastic bottle? I know I
have. Big mistake! When you throw away an old plastic bottle, it never
really goes away. It goes right into the landfills... It's just like your trash
can had a hole in it. (show tube empty set inside box). But if we throw
away the old plastic bottle into a recycling can it will be recycled. Ready?
1-2-3 RECYCLE!!! (Look in). Wow! You did it again! (pull out full water
bottle). A new clean bottle of water! You know, I'm thirsty. (take a
drink). Yum... water is another thing that we need to keep clean. Did
you know that one can of motor oil that gets thrown away wrong can
contaminate 2 million gallons of water! (recycling-revolution.com)
Congratulations Recyclers, (show box empty and show tube empty, put
tube back into box) you have made the world a cleaner place, absolutely
empty of trash that should have been recycled. But I've often thought to
myself, “Okay, if everyone recycled it would make the world a cleaner
place but just recycling one news paper, or one can, or one bottle isn't
going to make a difference is it?” Well, let's try something. Let's go back
in time and UN-RECYCLE what we just did. In just a moment I am going
to spin our arrows backwards the wrong way...and on the count of 3 let's
say the word “UNRECYCLE!” Ready 1-2-3 (Spin arrows backwards)
UNRECYCLE!
(Look into tube). Just as I thought! (lift tube and gimmick can together
rattling the trash to make sound) All of the trash is back and it's just like
you never recycled it in the first place. It just gets dumped into our
landfills! Oh this is terrible. (pour out trash into case and ditch gimmick
under cover. Place tube back into box).
Let's never let that happen! Everyday we need to think about recycling
instead of just throwing it away in the trash. If we do this, together (show
tube empty and lay it down) we can keep the world a much cleaner
place. (Show box empty lay it down on its side.)
Thank you and give yourselves a big hand for Recycling!
