Any child from poor and marginalized urban, rural and tribal communities, aged 9–18 can become a member of CDK. To open an account in India, a child needs just one basic unit of currency – a rupee. A volunteer child manager is chosen or elected by the members and holds this position for six months. Child managers are trained by the Butterflies finance team and help them to maintain ledger, cash and pass books. Ms. Beena Rao What This Lady Has Done For Over 5000 Slum Children Has An Important Lesson For All Of Us. Beena Rao is a Lecturer at Sardar Vallabha National Institute of Technology, Surat. Social Activist in slum area. Founder, “Prayas free coaching class”. She has been immensely inspired by her father who is a violinist and teaches the blind students for free. Beena Rao is one such person who is changing the lives of thousands of slum children around her with her simple initiative. Beena Rao’s Mission – To give free education to underprivileged-children. Her initiative ‘Prayas Free Coaching Classes’ was started in 2006 and sought to bridge a gap in delivery standards of present-day education in deprived neighbourhoods and slums of Surat, Gujarat. Rao, with the help of various volunteers, conducts coaching for the students of classes 3rd to 8th at various locations for free. She pays Rs.1,000-1,500 to the volunteers out of her own pocket or some donations that Prayas receives. A batch has 30 students and classes are conducted in the evening from 6 pm to 8 pm. Apart from teaching basic subjects, she also imparts moral education, and encourages students to engage in various art and craft activities. Rao also started a Mobile Laboratory to promote the spirit of science in underprivileged kids and to identify those who have potential to pursue a career in the sciences. Rao and her team also distribute books to these slum children to inculcate reading habits in them. Around 5,000 students have benefited from this so far Beena Rao’s efforts have brought a great transformation in the children. Most of the children are now disciplined and far away from their slang and abuse lingos. Narayanan Krishnan is an Indian chef-turned-social worker He was born in year 1981. Madurai, Tamil Nadu in the Krishnan was an award-winning chef with Taj Hotel , Bangalore and was short-listed for an elite job in Switzerland. After witnessing a distressing incident in 2002, he quit his job and began feeding the homeless and mentally disabled in his hometown. He said, "I saw a very old man, literally eating his own human waste out of hunger. I went to the nearby hotel and asked them what was available. They had idly , which I bought and gave to the old man. Believe me, I had never seen a person eating so fast, ever. As he ate the food, his eyes were filled with tears. Those were the tears of happiness." •Krishnan founded the Akshaya Trust organization in 2003, which helps to feed the homeless and mentally-disabled in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. •He serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to 425 indigent and elderly people in Madurai. He also provides haircuts and shaves to give dignity to those he serves. •During the last 12 years, he has served over 1.5 million meals to India’s homeless, mostly people abandoned by their families, either suffering from mental conditions or too old to care for themselves. •He was selected as one of the Top 10 in "CNN heroes 2010" list.
