PURPOSE?
Currently young men of color are the lowest groups pursing post-secondary education; while this is
attributable to many factors, the result of educational inadequacy among this population is clear:
“…. The fastest growing populations in the country are those minority groups with the lowest levels of
male educational attainment. If present levels of education and current population trends hold, the
United States will see a decline in the educational attainment of the country…. The goal of ensuring
the future global competitiveness of the U.S. cannot be met without the full participation of our nation's
young men of color…”
College Board Advocacy and Policy Center
Through volunteers; Expect More, BECOME MORE (EMBM) addresses the educational barriers of these
youth by giving them a space to reflect, plan, and network for their future self. With each story told the boys can take
further ownership for their academics and forthcoming careers.
STUDENT EXPERIENCE
The Expect More, BECOME MORE (EMBM) conference is a community invested event that networks young
men of color to professional men of color who were once boys like them. Guest will participate in a college
and career fair, hear from a keynote speaker, experience a half time show, and participate in three career
development workshops. Here, the students will listen to the obstacles the mentors have overcome and
the challenges set before them to earn their current occupations.
After, the students, will partake in hands on activities to understand the mentor’s skill set, become aware
of education required, and see the various path(s) of the specified industry. During the workshop, the
students are awarded raffle tickets for participation, behavior, and effort; at the end of each session, the
facilitator will raffle off prizes. The purpose of this experience is to encourage these young men to require
more out of self and aspire to become more than the generation before.
ADULT EXPERIENCE
The work of supporting these students does not begin and end at EMBM, we recognize this, and value
the power of relationships. Separately, adults can participate in tool kit workshops that show the many
pathways to post-secondary education, join a community forum, or participate in trainings on how to
generate buy in within the community. Participants are awarded raffle tickets, at the end of each
session, the facilitator will raffle the prizes.
2
AUDIENCE
EMBM targets (400) young men who identify as minority in grades 6th-11th, however, we provide equal opportunity without regard to race,
color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual preference, age, or disability.
COST
While EMBM is a unique experience, long term success necessitates the schools, and community based organizations attendance.
Students who register individually must be accompanied by an adult 25 years or older for the entire conference. We ask schools and/or
community based organizations to provide a bus, pay a $175.00 registration fee per bus (about 40 students), and provide staff
to chaperone.
