VSSB hosts its first Annual General Meeting
On 5 March VSSB hosted its first AGM where MD, Melanie Sharland,
delivered her Vuleka report for 2015 and introduced the strategic plan for 2016 –
2019. Headmistress, Mrs Lizbé Pieters, took us through the highlights of 2015 at the high
school and Finance Manager, Petro Du Plessis, went through the audited financial
statements and budgets for 2015. We would like to thank all parents who attended the
AGM and all the new parents who are now part of the Parents’ Association.
Pupil News and Events
In February the FundDza Literacy Trust hosted a writing workshop for 20 selected pupils.
Facilitator, Maia Marie, engaged with the pupils teaching them how to write
autobiographically and also introduced the technique of free writing. Some creative
pieces were heard from promising young writers. Thank you to the FunDza Literacy Trust
for this initiative.
Pupils had a marvelous time exploring various career opportunities when the Rocking
Futures Roadshow came to school. It’s important to encourage our pupils to think long
term about their career aspirations so we are always happy to welcome the roadshow
to VSSB.
Well done to Gr 11 pupils: Thato Siwela, Khonziwe Sibanyoni and Benefactor Mokoena
were selected to take part in a GIBS programme called the Spirit of Youth Leadership
Programme. This is a forum in which pupils critically engage on relevant South African
issues. Pupils are selected on the criteria that each has distinguished him or herself as a
leader in their school community. This is a wonderful opportunity to network with other
learners and important decision makers.
Geleza Nathi is a TV programme on SABC 1 that hosts some of South Africa’s best
teachers giving lessons to help pupils across South Africa to prepare for exams. VSSB
Accounting head of department, Mr Steinmann, has been featured regularly on the
show. We were privileged to have some of our pupils taking part in a few episodes that
aired between 5 am and 6 am during the second week of February. It is brilliant to
have such excellent representation by our pupils and teachers.
In March a few pupils attended a Scholar Day at Norton Rose Fulbright, a global legal
firm in Sandton, to learn about various career opportunities in the legal field. A superb
day was had by the pupils who gained first hand insight into the daily life of a laywer.
Later in March our Gr 8 and 9 pupils attended the National School of Arts’ Annual
Festival as part of our Creative Arts curriculum where pupils need to see theatre
productions. We were able to take our pupils to this wonderful event where they not
only had fun but were exposed to an array of wonderful theatrical talents.

Vizier Maths Sponsorship
VSSB was offered a sponsorship from Vizier Maths to use their computer
based programme for the teaching of Mathematics in Gr 8. Vizier Maths is a world class
e-maths solution and the programme will be used by our team of Mathematics
teachers as a tool to enhance the teaching of Maths. The programme has tutorials on
all the topics of the Gr 8 curriculum as well as practice questions. There are many
benefits to Vizier Maths as learners will have access to it from any device that has an
internet connection. In this way pupils can practise the topic that they have done at
school as well as watch the tutorials to better understand concepts.

Staff Training and Development
In February our Gr 12 teachers attended various meetings relating to the subjects they
teach. The meetings are aimed at consolidating information drawn from 2015 final
exam experiences across the region. Our teachers brought back valuable
information and suggested improvements to apply to their subjects where applicable.
Also in February, a few of our teachers attended a cluster meeting on iPad training
and how to use technology in the classroom, specifically iMovies. Pupils embrace
technology as it is an everyday part of our lives, and with that comes focus and
natural learning. At VSSB we believe it’s important to embracing technological
advancements to improve on learning taking place in the classroom.
Special Guest Visit
In March we were honoured to receive a visit from
Senator Philip Ozouf of Jersey in the UK. He was
accompanied by Andile Dube (Programme manager
of the Zenex Foundation) and Gail Campbell (CEO of
the Zenex Foundation). The Senator met with our Gr 11
Business Studies class and some ISASA Zenex scholarship
pupils.
