Peer coaching at St John Fisher Primary School 2017 parent meeting • Something new has been happening at St John Fisher Primary school as part of the Achievement for All programme ( AFA) which we began as a school in September 2015 • Staff have worked with three families from each class to have ‘structured’ conversations. These are like parents evening but last longer. They involve the children, parents and teachers as part of the meeting. We try to meet three times a year on strategies to help learning. • We are continuing to hold meetings and to use this as a tool to promote better outcomes for our children • Since September 2016 teachers at St John Fisher have been using another strategy along side structured conversations . It is called the Peer Coaching strategy and we are using this to inform our practice and improve learning outcomes for our children . • What is Peer coaching? • Peer coaching seeks to develop people, helping them to become ‘even better’ and more ‘consciously competent’ in their roles. • It is an approach which builds trust and confidence, focussing on solutions and personal growth. It enables improvement in performance to be generated internally with the school and easily shared with others • Why are we doing it at SJF? • We are maximising the potential of a strong teaching team at SJF to sustain improvement through building on personal capacity The role of the coach is to: How? • • • • Staff have worked in phases……. Early years team Key stage 1 team Key stage 2 team At St John Fisher we have pupil progress reviews for every child each short term. Sometimes children do not make the progress that we would expect. Three such pupils have been chosen to take part in the peer coaching approach to further identify barriers to learning. • Staff have looked at books and learning journeys • Visited classrooms and observed children • Analysed School attendance • Shared observations • Asked questions to each other help to unravel barriers to learning • What next ………………………… Discussions have lead to …… How have structured conversations helped …….. • Parents: ‘closer links with school’ ‘more confident to talk and be honest’ • Children: ‘I can ask for help’ ‘ People are hearing what I say’ • Teachers: ‘It is helping to build a trusting relationship with parents, parent meetings can be too short to do this’ • How has peer coaching helped so far ……. • Teachers/coachees feel supported when colleagues visit classes and are trusting each other in an honest, open way • Teachers are learning skills to further their own professional development by supporting each other in a very different role using questioning techniques to help their peer to find solutions. • The support visits into each other classes have resulted in an informal exploration to support colleagues • What next? • We would like to further our potential at SJF through working with the teaching assistant team in a similar way in order to continue to build capacity to over come barriers to learning for our children. • Any questions?
