PE Newsletter Spring 1 2017

Sporting Achievements –
Please encourage your children to share their sporting
achievements with their class teacher.
School Games Values –
The six School Games Values - Passion, Self-Belief, Respect, Honesty,
Determination and Teamwork - were developed by young people to recognise
how the experience of sport should be epitomised and embodied within
schools, and to reflect the 'spirit' of the School Games.
At Oakley, we encourage all children, teachers, coaches and spectators to
adopt and demonstrate the values within all PE lessons, out-of-school clubs
and during playtimes. We are continually looking for children who show any of these
6 School Games Values whilst involved in physical activity and these children will be
mentioned on our School Games Award page.
Early Years PE News –
In our Multi skills lessons we have continued to develop our fundamental movements
skills of agility, balance and coordination. We have been learning how to balance on
different body parts and how to throw with control to a partner. We also have been
learning to underarm throw at a target at different distances away.
For the last 6 weeks, Acorns have really enjoyed learning football skills with our
coach, Mark. Each Tuesday, in our PE lessons, the children have looked forward to
playing one of their favourite games, ‘Tom and Jerry’. This game was all about
dodging, quick foot work, and keeping a look out for those who were trying to catch
their ‘tails’. The children often worked as a team, talking together about what they
were going to do to achieve their target of collecting as many ‘tails’ as they could.
The children have shown some excellent dribbling skills and have learnt how to keep
control of the ball, keeping it close to their feet at all times. It has been great to
see the developing confidence of some of the children from week one through to the
final week. The children were always very keen to show Mark their skills, always
striving to improve on the previous week.
KS1 Sports News –
KS1 have spent this term dancing, particularly focusing on their rhythm and
movement. In line with our topic The Great Fire of London, we have been thinking
about how fire moves and replicating that with our own bodies. Juniper created a
dance that involved being somebody from 1666 or being the fire itself. Cherry Tree
and Willow created their own routine to Katy Perry's Firework, it was explosive!
All classes showcased their dance on Tuesday afternoon to each other.
KS2 Sports News –
In PE this term we have been taught gymnastics by Mr Etherington from Premier
sports. We have been learning lots of skills such as jumps, leaping and shapes. We
have been getting out the apparatus including the wall bars and bench tops. On our
own we have been doing some routines which have had to include different ways of
travelling. We always start with a warm-up and end with a cool-down.

Street Dance Club –
The Street dance group has been busy preparing for the Creative Arts Festival in
March at Sharnbrook. We are choreographing a dance to the old film theme
Cleopatra and trying to include some of our learning from our classroom topic of
Egypt.
Change for Life Club –
This term our Change 4 life club members have been enjoying games from our new
equipment bag. We now have the Adventure bag which contains games that
encourage the children to work well as part of a team, as well as solve problems.
Premier Sports Club –
At ball skills club we get into 4 teams and play games with the benches. The game is
called ‘Bench-ball’ and the aim is to get the ball to your person on the bench. We
pass it to the players on our team and the opposition try to defend their goal. We
also play a game where there is a ball in the middle and each team has lots of foam
balls and they try to hit the target. This game is called ‘Battleships’. We all really
enjoy this after school club and look forward to going each week.

Basketball Club –
This term some of us have been going to an after school club doing basketball. In
basketball we play different games and at the end of the lesson we have some
matches. We all have learnt different passes such as over-head, bounce and chestpass. Our games have helped us get better at shooting and passing. The thing I have
enjoyed most about the club is the shooting games because I like aiming high and
focusing on the net.
