Round 8: Silverstone 11th to 12h September 2010 Radical UK Cup 2010 Introduction As happens every year, the final race arrives and no one can believe how quickly the season has gone. It seems like only a month or so ago when the season kicked-off at Rockingham and everyone was wondering how the year would pan out. 360 Racing had all five cars in the last round of the UK Cup, with Ray Woolhead teaming up with seasoned professional, Nigel Greensall in his Insight/Vawtex sponsored SR3 RS. Ross Kaiser and Terrence Woodward came into the weekend needing just 3 points from either of the two races to secure the Masters Class title. Surely, luck would be with them this year. Page 1 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing Derek Johnson paired up with his old driving partner, Stuart Moseley, a potent combination at the Northamptonshire circuit. Mark Smithson was piloting his Marks Electrical sponsored SR3 RS, competing with Sami Suominen and Luigi Gatti in the team's SR3 RS, rounding off an excellent first year for the Italian and the Fin. There was disaster at the start of Saturday’s race, when Kaiser’s SR8 had to be pushed into the pitlane. “It had started OK but there was a hold up and I switched off and couldn’t restart. I couldn’t even radio to the crew as there was no power in the battery. So I joined from the pitlane and just kept my head down,” he explained. Page 3 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing Team mate Stuart Moseley had made a good getaway initially, “I was on unscrubbed tyres and went wide at Abbey, so had to play catch up,” he said. Moseley’s advance took him past the SR8’s of Callum Lockie and James Swift and into second place by the end of lap five, pitting to hand to Derek Johnston with the overall lead after Jamie Patterson’s SR8LM had pitted a lap earlier. Kaiser had also charged through to pit in second place, and with Patterson unable to rejoin, it became a 360 Racing one two with Johnston heading Woodward. But once again, fortune didn’t favour outgoing UK Champion Johnston. “I couldn’t believe it when the safety car came out, after that I just lost out on braking,” he said. Page 4 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing With three laps remaining, Woodward had the lead out of Becketts. It should have been plain sailing from there on, until Jordan Grogor, some three laps down, made an attack into Brooklands on the last lap. “Ross had driven like a man possessed. I had gone as fast as I could and was catching Derek when the safety car came out. I led and then got hit in the side by the backmarker and just limped home with a blown rear tyre,” Woodward explained. Johnston took the flag in fourth behind Manhal Allos and Shaun Balfe/Roger Bromiley. In the SR3s, 360 Racing’s Mark Smithson was delighted with seventh, having run solo for the first time . “It was really good, but I missed Stuart’s feedback,” he said. Page 5 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing Sami Suominen/Luigi Gatti were 10th, “It was ok but the safety car messed it up for us again,” said Suominen. Having teamed up with Nigel Greensall for the weekend, Ray Woolhead retired after six laps when the cambelt broke. “I was really enjoying it and keeping up well,” said Woolhead. It was an early start for Sunday’s race and Johnston’s luck ran out within yards of the start. “I made a good start and then had to brake hard at Copse. I got tapped and then hit in both sides and that was that,” he explained. Woodward had also got away well, “I went from third to second and managed to stay with Jamie Patterson for a short while, before concentrating on a safe second to hand to Ross,” he said. Page 6 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing “But I was nearly caught out by oil at Copse and Per Staaf got me just before the stops.” The second half developed into a three way fight, with Kaiser mainly in third, chasing down the duelling Staaf and Patterson. But on the last lap, Paterson had the lead, until he fell upon Ray Woolhead’s SR3 rejoining from a spin. The impact was heavy, and Kaiser seized his chance and took the win. “I was running third and caught Jamie, but had speed in the wrong places. He had pulled a gap and I thought late lunges were a bit too risky. I got Per at Luffield and was chasing Jamie when he hit Ray. So I had to dodge the debris and just counted my good fortune,” he explained. Greensall and Woolhead had led the SR3 class all race until Chris Dymond caught them with only a few laps to. Dymond had gone through into Copse, but Woolhead caught the oil, spun and was hit by Patterson as he rejoined. Page 7 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing Their misfortune handed Smithson second in class. “I listened to the advice I had been given, did what I had to and avoided the spinners. Although I spun on the grass at Copse on the first lap,” he said. Gatti/Suominen came home seventh and Woolhead/Greensall were still classified 11th. For Woodward and Kaiser their successes crowned them UK Cup SR8 class champions and puts them well in contention for the Masters title in Abu Dhabi next month. For Kaiser too the dream of racing at Daytona in February edges ever closer as he now leads the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge. Page 8 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing Conclusion The 2010 season has been a fantastic roller-coaster ride for the team. Growing from three cars and three drivers in 2009 to six cars and nine drivers, the team had real presence at every round, and has firmly established itself as the largest independent Radical race team in the world. At the same time, the standard of engineering has been such that the reliability has been superb, undoubtedly a major contributing factor in the team's success. And for Ross and Terrence to win the UK Cup Masters Class with a double win at Silverstone, rounded the season off nicely. Page 9 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing In the UK Cup, the team’s new drivers, Mark Smithson, Sami Suominen and Luigi Gatti (the 'Super Mario Bothers') all achieved podium finishes, a fantastic feat in their first season of Radical racing. And in the Clubman's Cup, Ray Woolhead improved with every race, crowning his season with a fantastic stint at the front of the SR3 class at Silverstone, 'the home of British Motorsport'. The team would like to thank its sponsors and customer drivers for their support this season, the best yet, by some distance. Bring on 2011. ************* Page 10 of 10 2010 Round 8: Silverstone 360 Racing
