She is currently the Director of the School of Economics, University of Nairobi. She is currently a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board of African Growth and Development Policy (AGRODEP) Modeling Consortium and the Centre for Economics, Environment and Society (CEES); a vice-chair of the AERC’s Collaborative PhD Programme Academic board, a member of the Collaborative Masters Programme Academic Board, a resource person with AERC; a Scientific Programme Committee Member of the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) and the Center for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA). Mariara is also a member of the editorial board of Environment and Development Economics and an associate editor of the African Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AFJARE); and, an international representative of SACHA International Academic Journals. Her key research interests include the impact (and adaptations) of climate change on agriculture; environmental and natural resource economics; and poverty and income distribution issues, with emphasis on multiple dimensions of child poverty. She is one of the most active and competitive researchers with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) Research network and the Center for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA). She has also worn many research grants from local, regional and international organizations. She has also participated and competently presented papers in many local, regional and international workshops and conferences including World Congresses in her areas of research. She has consulted for the World Bank, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC); the African Economic Research Consortium; and, the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) among other institutions. She has been a visiting fellow at the International Monetary Fund (Washington DC), The World Bank (Washington DC), Cornell University (U.S.A), Laval University (Canada) and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Italy).
