Proposal Title Proposal Author – Institution - Email Date 1. Project Abstract Describe the research project for us. It can be from the original proposal, perhaps updated as needed. We need to understand what you are trying to do, and how you are doing it. Since this is most like funded, tell us who funded it, when, and to what amount. If it’s not funded, tell us if you plan to pursue funding with results gathered. 2. Project PIs and Contact Info List out all relevant PIs and project staff. Give their names, and contact information (e-mail is sufficient, postal addresses if relevant). 3. Proposed Use of Internet2 Resources Citing evidence from Section 1, describe how running on Internet2 resources is relevant to the research. Describe the basic resources that are needed: Access to data that is (or is not) publically available Access to machines (e.g. servers) o Where they could be located on the network footprint o OS requirements (if any) o If accounts will be needed for support staff Installation of software o If Internet2 engineers have to do this, estimate how much of their time it will take. o Proposed solution for package management Installation of hardware o If Internet2 engineers have to do this, estimate how much of their time it will take. o Who owns the hardware, and how will you get it to us? o Internet2 will require that administrative access (e.g. “root”) be given to all machines on our network. Data retention/sharing/saving policies o E.g. will data be saved locally, and migrated later, or mirrored to external resources. The more we know, the fewer questions we need to ask as we review. Note that Internet2 is not the same as other distributing computing and network research projects (e.g. PlanetLab/GENI) in that we don’t have a rich ecosystem of servers available for research use. We have a limited number of services, located near the network equipment, and they have use cases already (e.g. measurement, control, etc.). We will evaluate the use to see if it will be constructive or destructive to the regular mission. 4. Duration of Experimentation Describe a timeline for the experimentation. Things to note: Time needed to configure/install experiment Proposed run time Milestone reviews for experimentation run (e.g. daily, weekly, etc.) Time needed to clean up/uninstall A final report is due no later than 60 days after the experiments have ended; this can be relaxed upon request if there is a need present work in peer reviewed publications. All results can be made confidential if required. Its better to overestimate and end early than it is to underestimate. Be realistic given your personal resources. If you are requesting Internet2 engineer time for any purpose (e.g. installation of software), we may make alterations to the plan to fit our own requirements. 5. Expected Outcomes What will access to the Internet2 hosts do for your project? Will the gathering of additional data make the final report stronger? Reveal flaws in the process? Lead to future innovations/projects under new funding? We need to know the goals, so that we can see how they fit into our own strategy for research support. 6. Relevant Ways to Share Resulting Data Internet2 encourages sharing results in peer-reviewed publications. Apart from this, each researcher will be required to submit a final report on the status and findings of their research, a template can be found here. This report is due no later than 60 days after the experiments have ended. Special consideration will be given to researchers aiming for use of results in peer reviewed publications; a delay in reporting can be requested and all results shared with Internet2 will be treated as confidential if required. Publications resulting from the research must credit use of the Internet2 Hosted Research Program. Prior to the completion of the use period, the researcher may submit for review a proposal to extend the use period for a specified time if required. Do you expect to present the findings at a future Internet2 sponsored event (e.g. Member Meeting, Joint Techs). If you weren’t considering that, would you consider it?
