BTEC COMPUTING and ICT Department This

BTEC COMPUTING and ICT Department
This subject area offers two courses; BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Computing
and the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Information and Creative Technology. The
department work very closely with the ‘A’ level IT and Computer Science
departments; some staff teach on all three courses.
We are an inclusive department and this gives us the flexibility to offer wider choice
of computing courses. Students that apply to study on the three courses are advised
at interview and at enrolment to help them to choose a computing course that will
most suit their needs and career plans.

Entry requirements for the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is five GCSE
grades A* to C. Our primary programming languages are VB.Net and Python,
and we also use Adobe CS6 for the delivery of other units.
The BTEC Level 2 Diploma program is an equivalent of four GCSE’s and entry
requirements for this cis a minimum of four GCSE’s at grade D.
We have links with Manchester Metropolitan University, The University of
Manchester, Bolton University and University of Central Lancashire. Where possible,
we take students on trips to conferences, lectures and master classes where our
students take part in extra curricula activities within the departments. When
circumstances permit we take our students on trips abroad to combine cultural visits
with education.
Courses are taught in our multi-million pound new building, in which we have a
dedicated floor with 8 IT suites including a dedicated lab for teaching networking
and computer build and technical units for the BTEC level 3 and level 2 programs. All
rooms have interactive smartboards, whiteboards, visualizers, and all computers
have broadband access to the Internet. The college network currently uses Windows
8 and Office 2010 applications, along with a variety of other software, including
Adobe CS6, VB.Net. and Python. Our students have also got access to computers in
the study centre, and can remotely access resources through eLoreto, our intranet.
The network is managed and maintained by a dedicated network manager and a
team of technicians.
