Alberta Provincial League – June 17-18 at Dawson Creek
The Dawson Creek Halo D-Backs successfully hosted their first round-robin
tourney of the competitive season and provided local baseball fans with plenty of
excitement at Kin Park. Playing against northern Alberta’s best AA peewee squads,
the Halo D-Backs lost a heartbreaker in their opener against Camrose, then earned
gutsy, hard-fought wins in their final two games vs. Vegreville and St. Albert.
With the exception of two innings, the D-Back’s used stellar defence, led by pitchers
Dylan Remenyk, Jason Ginter, Anders Carlstad and Tyler Akeroyd, to basically
shut down their opponents all weekend. Offensively, the D-Backs were led by Blair
Walsh with five hits, followed closely by Ginter, Akeroyd and David Readman with
3 each.
Game #1 – June 17 – Camrose Cougars 10 vs. Dawson Creek Halo D-Backs 6
SUMMARY
This game was close throughout. The D-Backs fought back from an early 3-1 deficit to lead 5-3
after the top half of the fifth inning. Camrose scored two in their fifth to tie, and then exploded
for four hits and five runs in the next inning to take a commanding 10-5 lead. The DC squad
scored once in their final at-bat, but it was not enough. The Cougars out-hit the D-Backs 9-7.
Dylan Remenyk earned Dawson Creek’s game MVP, as selected by Camrose coaches.
DC Player Highlights
- Starter Anders Carlstad and middle reliever Remenyk combined to keep this game
deadlocked after five innings. Remenyk was exceptional, as he got his squad out of a jam in
the 2nd, and then allowed only two runs and three hits over the next three innings. He fanned
five Cougar batters, and led the D-Backs with 4 stolen bases and 5 defensive put-outs. Tyson
McCallum took the loss after a tough single inning in relief. D-Back pitchers K’ed 9 overall.
- Tyler Akeroyd had DC’s only multi-hit game as he went 2/3 at the dish with a RBI. Connor
Fynn and Braden Clouthier and each scored two runs and had a hit; Clouthier’s was a double.
Anders Carlstad stroked a two-run single in the third inning. Additional singles by Blair
Walsh and Kyle Carlstrom.
Game #2 – June 17 – Dawson Creek Halo D-Backs 4 vs. Vegreville Bears 2
SUMMARY
Vegreville entered this game sporting an almost perfect 10-1 record in provincial play. As the
score indicates, this was a defensive battle. The D-Backs opened quickly, scoring two runs in
their first inning and were leading 3-0 after three complete. Starter Tyler Akeroyd and relievers
Jason Ginter and Anders Carlstad were very strong on the mound; combined they had 12
strikeouts and only allowed a single earned run. Mark Readman made a great diving snag on a
ground ball to end the game. Game MVP to closer Carlstad.

DC Player Highlights
- Starter Akeroyd went two complete, and fanned 4 of the 8 batters he faced. He also hit a
single, had 2 RBI’s, 3 stolen bases and 5 defensive put-outs.
- Ginter earned the win, as he tossed 3 & 1/3 solid innings, in his best pitching performance of
the year. He struck out 6, allowed no earned runs and scattered only four hits. Defensively,
he led his squad with 7 put-outs and two assists. On offence, he helped his own cause with a
single, a RBI and two stolen bases.
- Carlstad entered during the Bears’ 6th offensive inning, stopped a small rally, and then earned
the save by only allowing a single run in Vegreville’s last at bat.
- On offence, the D-Backs only had 4 hits and 7 baserunners in total. Blair Walsh hit 2/2 with
a double and a single to lead his team. Connor Fynn reached base twice, after being hit and
walked. He scored two runs and had 4 stolen bases.
Game #3 – June 18 – Dawson Creek Halo D-Backs 10 vs. St. Albert Cardinals 9
SUMMARY
This was the last and most exciting game of the tourney as the D-Backs rallied to earn an extrainning win. Up 5-1, the DC Halo entry allowed seven St. Albert runs in a forgetful third inning.
Instead of folding, they rallied to score two runs in the 7th to tie, then held the Cards scoreless to
force extra innings. In the 8th, Dawson Creek converted a Tyson McCallum bunt single into the
winning run, and then used solid team defence to keep the St. Albert team at bay. Three DC
double-plays highlighted a terrific defensive performance, capped by a game-ending sensational
catch and throw double-play to first base by outfielder Kyle Carlstrom. Blair Walsh earned the
game MVP.
DC Player Highlights
- With the exception of the third inning, D-Back pitchers were again exceptional. Middle
reliever Dylan Remenyk pitched his best game of the season; he tossed 4 and 2/3 innings,
allowed only one earned run and three hits. He entered to close the third, and then gave his
squad a chance as he carried the D-Backs through the 7th without incident. He also stroked a
double to assist on offence.
- Starter Tyler Akeroyd pitched a scoreless first inning, before retiring after injury. Reliever
Anders Carlstad threw a strong second inning, but suffered control problems during the
Cardinals third inning rally. After Remenyk settled the Cardinals, closer Jason Ginter used
great composure to earn the save in the pressure-packed extra inning.
- Offensively, the D-Backs pounded out 11 hits. David Readman led the hit parade, batting 3/4
with a triple, two singles, two RBI and defensively added 9 put-outs at first base.
- Catchers Jason Ginter and Tyson McCallum each hit 2/3 and reached base in three of four
attempts. McCallum had two bunt singles, scored three runs and stole four bases. Ginter hit
a double and a long single, scored twice and stole 5 bases.
- Blair Walsh had a remarkable game, on both sides of the plate. On offence, he hit 2/4
including a double and had two RBI’s as the clean-up hitter. On defence, he earned 3 putouts, 4 assists and was instrumental in two double-plays from the second base position.
- Connor Fynn added a single.
The Dawson Creek Halo D-Backs are especially grateful to its many sponsors,
volunteers, fans and especially the City of Dawson Creek for its continued support
in fostering local youth recreational opportunities. Visiting teams enjoyed the new
fields at Kin Park and all feedback was very positive.

Three additional games were played to complete the weekend action on the new Kin
Park ball field in Dawson Creek. On Saturday, June 17th, it was Camrose handing
the Cold Lake Cardinals their only loss of the season by a tight 4-3 score. Camrose
scored a go-ahead run in their half of the 6th inning, and then held Cold Lake
scoreless in their last at-bat to earn the win.
Cold Lake immediately rebounded to beat the previously undefeated Vegreville
Bears 3-2 in another defensive gem. Down 2-0 early, Cold Lake shut down the
Bears and manufactured a single run in each of their 6th, 7th and 8th innings to claim
the extra-inning victory.
On Sunday, June 18th, Cold Lake upped their record to 6-1 with a 10-9 victory over
the St. Albert Cardinals. Cold Lake led 10-6 after their half of the 7th inning;
however they almost let this game slip away as St. Albert rallied for 3 runs, leaving
the tying run at second base in their last at-bat.

The Dawson Creek PeeWee Halo D-Backs now await the results of the Vegreville/Ft.
Saskatchewan game which is expected to have a direct bearing on their future.
Should Ft. Saskatchewan win, the D-Backs will finish 3rd in the Northern Division.
Regardless of whether they finish 3rd or 4th, the Dawson Creek entry will see its next
action on July 1-2. Round-robin locations are not expected to be announced until
after June 20th. Teams are re-seeded after June play, and July’s round-robin will
qualify teams for provincials in their respective tiers.
The Halo D-Backs have applied to host the Alberta provincials, occurring on July
28-30. Correspondence to date leads team management to believe they may be
granted this host opportunity. Baseball Alberta is expected to confirm its host cities
by June 29.
