Careers guidance, coaching and counselling Day 1

Career coaching, guidance and counselling
Career Guidance Theory
Traditional careers theories are briefly reviewed before moving on to consider
contemporary developments in theory and how to apply this in practice
Who is it for?
Professional
development
in
career
guidance
and
coaching
for
qualified
practitioners. Ideally advisers will have a basic understanding of traditional career
theory but this is not a pre-requisite.
What does the programme aim to achieve?
The world of opportunities is rapidly changing and increasingly complex. Rather than
a job for life with a stable job role, people have to navigate constant change. We
briefly explore with you the limitations of traditional career choice theory and
consider recent developments including:

Planned Happenstance; how to enable clients to make the most of ‘chance’
opportunities;

Informed intuition: what part does this play in effective decision making? How
to help clients explore their own narrative through visualisation and listening to
their inner voice;

Constructivism: working from how clients see and experience their world
A highly practical day, considering the implications of these developments for
practice and trying out activities that can be used to support client’s decision-making.
There’s the option of a follow-up day two experience.
Aims

To provide an overview of career theory and its practical application both
online and offline.

To develop appropriate focus and language that promotes careers work to
others
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the day participants know how to:

describe developments in career theory post 1990 and the implications for
their work

use a decision making method that works from the client’s way of viewing the
world (constructivism/ narrative approach)

use a decision making method that accesses intuition and the imagination
(constructivism/ narrative approach)

practically support clients to respond to ‘chance’ events and maximise their
chances in a rapidly shifting economy (planned happenstance and career
adaptability approaches)
