10 Fun Facts about Watson
1. There are actually two Watsons, a slow and forgiving one for development, and a fast
(and quirky) one for playing Jeopardy.
2. Watson’s first name was Blue J, Blue for Big Blue, J for Jeopardy. But trademark issues led to
another name, and they settled on Watson, the name of IBM’s founder.
3. The raw data stored in Watson, about 75 gigabytes, could easily fit into an iPod classic.
4. Watson has an algorithm especially designed to detect puns in language. (It doesn’t always work.)
5. In its first year of development, IBM’s Jeopardy machine took nearly two hours to respond
to a single clue.
6. The leader of the Jeopardy team, David Ferrucci, once programmed a computer to write fiction
by itself. (Its stories, he says, weren’t exactly gripping.)
7. Within less than two seconds, Watson brings back hundreds, or even thousands, of “responses.”
In the following second, it has to choose the best one and decide whether to bet on it.
8. In its early days, Watson once speculated that the diet of butterflies was “kosher.”
9. To create an optimal betting strategy, Watson played millions of simulated Jeopardy! games.
So it has far more experience in the game than any human ever could.
10. Watson’s performance plummets by 10% on Jeopardy clues written after 2003. IBM researchers
have no idea why this is. They call it “climate change.”
