Matt and Marco Win Again
Two former Design students have designed a game which has won two
prestigious awards in the United States.
Matt Woolven and Marco Marino won the Independent Propeller
Award at SXSW Screenburn in Texas for GLiD, a single player game
which features a gentle insect-type creature, tasked with exploring and
restoring an abandoned world.
The pair collected a winner’s cheque of $50,000 and are now
deciding whether to sign a contract with a publisher or to set up their
own company.
Matt and Marco also won the Student Showcase award at the
Independent Games Festival earlier this year.
Matt said, “It’s been pretty crazy and we’ve had people like Sony
approach us. The picture has been
changing very fast and we are
hoping that GLiD will be available
across all platforms including:
Xbox, PS3, iPhone and iPad.”
Matt is dyslexic and has been
receiving Learning Support during
his studies. He is keen to
encourage other students with
dyslexia to follow their dreams.

Top Designer Visits
Northbrook
Renowned fashion designer Julian Roberts visited Northbrook to teach
fashion students about his innovative pattern cutting method.
Professor Julian Roberts has shown 13 collections at London Fashion
Week since 1999, under label names such as JULIANAND, nothing
nothing and Julian and Sophie - winning a BFC
New Generation Award for each label.
Julian is the inventor of a garment pattern cutting
method called ‘subtraction cutting’, which he
demonstrates live in front of audiences around the
world.
Students studying on Northbrook’s BA and
Diploma Fashion courses crowded into the lecture
theatre to see the lecture and demonstration. Later that
day, Julian helped a group of second year students to
have a go at using the technique themselves.

Students Visit the Big Apple
A group of 40 lucky Northbrook students have returned from a trip to
New York City.
The students are studying for BA degree courses in the Fashion and
Textiles department and they were taken on the six day educational trip
by their tutors.
The group stayed in a Times Square hotel and visited several art
and design museums, including the Fashion Institute of Technology,
the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. They also saw the Empire State building
and enjoyed a walk through the snow in Central Park.
New Look for
The University Centre
New signage has been installed at the Durrington campus, in line with
the site’s University Centre branding.
Northbrook provides a wide range of university level courses with a
largely vocational thrust, which will sustain students’ progress into the
world of future employment.
A total of 541 students graduated from Northbrook’s university
level courses last year - a number which has been rising steadily over
the last ten years.
“Taking the students to one of the fashion capitals of the world like New York is an
incredibly important part of their global fashion awareness and an enriching cultural
activity. In many cases it’s the first time students have had the chance to travel
across the Atlantic and to experience the excitement of New York, a city so famous,
it feels like you’re in a giant movie set!”

Super Vee Back in Action
Motorsport students have helped to put a 1970s Supernova
Formula Vee race car back on its wheels after an extensive
rebuild.
Super Vee, believed to be a factory development car, came
to the Auto Department as a total restoration project. In the
USA Formula Super Vee was the feeder class for drivers to
move on to Indy car racing and the car was raced in the USA,
reportedly lapping the oval tracks at over 170 mph.
On its return to the UK, Super Vee was used for several
years up to the early 90s in sprints and hill climbs. It was
until very recently the fastest 1600cc race car at the Brighton
Speed Trials and it is the College’s intention to take it back to
the Brighton event.
“This has been a long and drawn out process as undertaken by FdEng Motorsport
Degree students, in conjunction with several subject experts from around the
country. However we will now soon be in a position to present the fruit of our labours
to an eager Motorsport community who have high regard for this vehicle and the
work we have undertaken on it, as an interesting piece of World Motorsport heritage.
It is testament to our staff and students who have had to design and build most of
the car from scratch. I would like to personally thank them for their efforts.”

Fine Art degree students
have displayed their work in
‘Interventions’, an exhibition
of site specific work at Pallant
House Gallery in Chichester.
The work is the result of a
year-long project in which
students and their tutors met
at Pallant House to discuss
ideas for making daring and
unexpected art works that
could be situated anywhere in
Pallant House except where
you might expect to see them,
on the walls of the gallery.
From the surreal humour of
Maureen Hagger’s giant
soft-sculpture clubs made from
men’s ties, to the exquisitely
detailed miniature photographs
by Yasmin Raphael, the
‘Interventions’ exhibition takes
the visitor on a journey of
discovery which will help them
to see the building and its
contents through fresh eyes.

students took an exciting trip to
Barcelona in January to take in the
cultural sights of the City.
The students took a Gaudi tour,
visited a number of art galleries
and viewed an art school and
an artist’s studio. They also took
photographs of their trip and
made them into Polaroid-style
shots as part of their creative-lens
art practice.

XPOSURE 2011 Competition.
Two Northbrook students have won prizes at the annual awards for
Sussex Colleges held in Brighton. Simon Browne was named West
Sussex Apprentice of the Year and Ibrahim Wario was named City
& Guilds Sussex Learner of the Year. The Sussex Spring Awards
ceremony, organised by FE Sussex, was held at the Brighton Hilton
Metropole. Several Northbrook students helped out at the event, with
Cabin Crew students in their uniforms meeting and greeting the guests
and Games Design students offering an interactive demonstration.
Award winner Ibrahim Wario is 21 and from Hove. He has been
studying for a City & Guilds qualification in Aeronautical Engineering.
Ibrahim was a refugee who came to England with only a primary
school certificate and an ambition to one day work on aeroplanes.
After taking classes in Maths, Physics and English, he was able to
join an aircraft maintenance course at Northbrook College. Andrew
Bellinger, Head of Aeronautical Engineering, said, “Ibrahim Wario is a
hard working and diligent student with excellent attendance and solid
achievement, who has had to overcome many disadvantages in life to
get to where he is today.”
Simon Browne, 28, from Littlehampton, has been studying on a
Northbrook Apprenticeship leading to a Certificate in Property, while
employed by estate agent Molica Franklin. Selina Bishop, Apprenticeship
Assessor, said, “Simon pushed the boundaries by insisting that his
targets were in line with the more experienced senior staff.”

Construction work on the new Broadwater 14–19
Centre is now well underway. Phase one of the
building will include the new Hair and Beauty salons, classrooms and College reception area.
It is anticipated that the Reception area will be open in September, with the new teaching rooms
available shortly afterwards. A separate ‘sustainable classroom’ will also be under construction shortly,
allowing sustainable building techniques to be taught and showcased.
The College was awarded a £1 million redevelopment grant by the Skills Funding Agency – one of only
15 colleges nationally to receive this allocation.

Army Helicopter
Visits Northbrook
An army helicopter flew in to visit Northbrook
College students recently.
The Lynx helicopter’s visit was part of an army
careers event held at the College’s Shoreham Airport
campus The Army’s careers service is keen to recruit
aircraft technicians from Northbrook’s aeronautical
engineering courses. The students were shown
around the inside of the helicopter by the pilot and
door gunner, where they got a first hand look at
some of the equipment.
The careers day was organised by the Royal Electrical
and Mechanical Engineers and included a presentation,
a display of the various types of uniforms, seeing
what makes up a soldier’s field kit and the opportunity
to try on body armour, helmets and various webbing.
The students were also split into groups which were
each given a Haynes model four cylinder engine to
build and they were assessed on technical prowess,
the ability to work as a team, organisational skills and
interpretation of technical information.
Students with learning difficulties are taking part
in a choir for young people, which will perform at
Glyndebourne.
James Redwood, renowned composer and choir
master from Glyndebourne, came to Northbrook to
offer taster sessions for the students and to sing
with them.
The project is a joint venture with Carousel, a
learning disabilities performing arts company,
Glyndebourne and Pallant House Gallery, and involves
LLDD students from various colleges in the South.
Rehearsals will be weekly in Brighton, with the
College providing a minibus for our students.
The show premieres at Glyndebourne with
performances in Brighton, Chichester and London,
followed by a tour in late spring. The idea for the
project came from the 2012 Paralympic Games,
which will be the first year that people with learning
disabilities will be able to participate.

TQS Celebrations!
Frank Buttle Award
Following successful accreditation of the Training Quality Standard
in August 2010, Northbrook held a celebratory reception for staff,
governors, partners and clients, providing the opportunity to officially
present the recently received plaque and certificate.
Partners, Les Webb from Campus Training and Clare Mangan
representing Adur & Worthing Borough Council, presented the award
and congratulated the College on its outstanding work with local
employers and the high reputation it had developed.
Sue Dare, College Principal, explained how difficult the standard
was to achieve, but due to the strong employer relationships in place,
the College was in a position to successfully go forward with its application.
Jane Claxton, Chair of the Corporate Governing Body, congratulated
the College on its success and was delighted to receive the award on
behalf of the College.
Northbrook has been awarded a quality mark for its
commitment to looked-after children and care leavers.
The Frank Buttle Trust Quality Mark is awarded to
universities and colleges in the UK and Northbrook
is the first Further Education College in the south of
England to receive recognition. In order to qualify,
Northbrook underwent a rigorous assessment and
had to fulfil a number of requirements.
The Frank Buttle Trust set up the Quality Mark in
2006 in recognition of higher education institutions
who go that extra mile to support students who have
been in public care.
MPs Encourage Employers to take
on Apprentices
During this year’s National Apprenticeship Week,
local MPs Tim Loughton and Peter Bottomley both
paid visits to Northbrook campuses and met with
apprentices and some of their employers.
Minister and local MP Tim Loughton met
apprentices at Northbrook College’s Business
Development Unit, to mark national Apprenticeship
Week. During his visit, Mr Loughton met West
Sussex Apprentice of the Year, Simon Browne
and Tim Franklin, Director and Founder of local
estate agent Molica Franklin, who employed Simon
as an apprentice. Mr Loughton also took a tour
of the Business Development Unit and met two
young apprentices who have joined the Business
Development Team at Northbrook. Mr Loughton
spoke of the important role that apprenticeships
have to play in tackling youth unemployment,
helping the economy and in up-skilling the
workforce.
West Worthing MP, Sir Peter Bottomley, also
visited Northbrook and met a group of young
apprentices at the Broadwater campus, where they
have been employed as trainee electricians working
on the re-building of their own campus. Peter
Bottomley met apprentices who work for Simpson
Electrical, the company contracted to carry out

electrical work on the eagerly awaited rebuilding
of Northbrook’s Broadwater campus. During the
visit, a plaque was presented to Simpson Electrical
in recognition of their support of apprentices at
Northbrook College over many years.
The government is aiming to create 100,000
more apprenticeship positions by 2014. Apprentices
gain qualifications by attending college one day per
week while they work for an employer for the rest of
the week. During Apprenticeship Week, Northbrook
highlighted the benefits to businesses of employing
an apprentice, which can prove a low cost asset to
businesses in these difficult times.
Apprenticeship Celebrations
The Apprenticeship Team celebrated the success of their apprentices at their fourth annual
Celebration Evening. Certificates were awarded as well as 16 ‘special’ vocational awards for
apprentices who had achieved exceptionally well in
their specific sectors.
Kathy Kelly, a Health and Social Care apprentice
sponsored by Northbrook, was awarded ‘Apprentice
