Artificial light and the influence
on our daily life

Activity

Within these lessons the children will learn and think about artificial
light and the influence on our daily life, a.o. by discussion with elderly.
Teaching level & objectives

7-9 years old.

Artificial light.

Socioscientific research.

Discussion of the connection between science and society.
Strategies

Theory / experiment on artificial light.

Home assignment (what kind of artificial lights are used at
home and when/how long (lights/t.v./computer etc).

Interview with e.g. grandparents about living without artificial
lights.

Discussion.
Model

Active learning.

Constructivistic approach.

Mixed teacher/student control.

Case-based teaching, which can be used to engage students in
critical thinking and decision making about realistic problems
in a discipline.
Procedures


Materials

Sources of artificial and natural light.

Interview questions, (partially) created by the students.
Classroom organisation.

Whole class discussion / 'teaching‘.

Individual home assignment.

Small group discussion on results.
Learning outcomes

The children can list a number of artificial light sources in their
homes.

The children can write down a number of uses of artifical light.

The children will compare life with and without artificial lights.

The children can give a number of alternatives to artificial light
sources.

The children can create a questionnaire.
Evaluation

Observing the childrens reactions.

Have another teacher to observe the class.

Reactions of the children on the interview with the
grandparents (are they enthusiastic?)
