August 2016 - Meeting Notes - "Recipe Refresh"

Corporate Wellness Round Table
August 24, 2016
We all know that nutrition is important, but we have learned in recent years that what we put in our
bodies is even more important than our activity, although regular exercise is still very important to
overall wellness. However, our wellness programs sometimes focus more on exercise than nutrition.
We explored this subject, beginning with a healthy “cooking” class led by Krystal Floyd, M.S., Wellness
Manager at OU Physicians. The recipe and cost analysis for 30 participants is attached. We call these
“cooking” classes “Recipe Refresh” because we try to shine a healthy light on some of our favorite
recipes without actually using a heat source at work. Below are some notes from our discussion:

Recipe Refresh is offered once a month. Our employees would like it more often, but budget
limits this.
We spend approximately $200 - $250 per month on food; utensils are from Dollar Tree to
maximize budget.
Pre-portioned items are used when appropriate for class navigation and mess management
(applesauce and peanut butter from the attached recipe were pre-portioned)
Recipes are found from Yummly.com, Pinterest and Google. Other websites offered were
Allrecipes.com and RecipeGoldmine.com. Krystal chooses a recipe, then tries it on friends and
family before offering it up to our employees.
We use Buy for Less because they allow us to use a store account. Our contact there is Mandy
Merrifield, [email protected]
It was also suggested to use Sam’s or Walmart Pick-up for convenience.
Other discussion points:


Weekly/monthly newsletter with healthy recipe – try something other than salads alone.
Road Shows – taking your message to offsite employees. Sometimes face-to-face means more.
Use postcards to include spouses in health decisions.
Social Media when company culture allows.
Health Pantry in breakroom.
Go Slow Whoa Vending Machines. These appear to be specialty (I haven’t found a mass
marketed one, yet), but many healthy machines exist. I am attaching the Go Slow Whoa
guidelines if you would like to use any of these in your offices.
As promised, Krystal’s information is below:
