Gates wins 10K Swiss
The team finished with
126 victory points, 1.75
ahead of Ellen Kozlove’s
squad. Kozlove played
with Ralph Letizia, Lee
Bukstel and Michael Wolf.
“We’ve never done
this well before,” Gates
said. “We had a really
good day Friday.”
Wins in the first six
rounds of Friday’s qualifier
propelled them into a
lead that held on through
the end of the day. On
Saturday, the Kozlove
team, who had been
second after qualifying,
Bill Gates, Sharon Osberg, Richard Friesner and Eric Robinson won
led six of eight rounds, but

Peter Rank 1938–2017
Grand Life Master Peter Rank of Palm
Springs CA died at his home Feb. 11. The threetime NABC champion was 78. Rank served as
League Counsel for the ACBL from 2001 until his
retirement last August.
Home-schooled in bridge by his mother (with
the aid of a Culbertson book), Rank started learning
the game at the age of 4. By 9, he was playing
high-stakes bridge at the country club.
“It was neat to be able to play with the adults,”
he said in an interview for the Daily Bulletin in fall
2015. “I was always better than the people who
taught me, and I don’t know why. I guess it was
just intuitive.”
It was on the Stanford college campus that
Rank discovered the duplicate form of the game.
While a college sophomore, Rank traveled to
Denver to attend his first regional.
“I arrived at the old Albany Hotel where the
tournament was being played,” he said, “handed
my suitcase to the bellman and went off to play in
the men’s pairs.”
During the game, Rank found himself facing
the bellman. “We took them for 1100 and 800.
I told my partner, ‘I really feel bad for that
bellman.’ ”
Rank’s partner replied, “That wasn’t the
bellman, it was Barry Crane.” When Rank returned
to the lobby, his suitcase was just where he left it.
The meeting with
Crane proved pivotal.
Rank won two of his
three NABC titles
sitting across the table
from Crane: the 1966
Wernher Open Pairs
and the 1977 Silodor
Open Pairs. (He won
the Rockwell Mixed
Pairs with Marilyn
Johnson in 1968.) In
1965, Crane swung
his support to Rank in the annual McKenney
competition for the most matchpoints, which
boosted Rank to No. 1 in the Top 500 masterpoint
race. (The annual contest is now named for Barry
Crane.)
Rank retired from full-time play in 1978, but
returned to more active tournament play in 2010.
A graduate of the UC Berkeley School of
Law, Rank was the former California State Health
Director and the former director of the California
Employment Department. (He didn’t miss a
Cal vs. Stanford football game in 50 years.) In
1968, he was recruited to work for the Reagan
administration, after which he opened his own law
practice.

Winners of the Lebhar IMP Pairs, Chen Zhao
and Jing Liu
Chen, Jing grab
IMP Pairs title
China’s Chen Zhao and Jing Liu won the foursession Lebhar IMP Pairs, holding off a challenge
by runners-up Fred King and Barry Bragin. Chen
and Jing’s margin of victory was 1.8 IMPs.
For Chen, a PhD student at the University of
Maryland in computer science, and Jing, who plays
for China’s national team which made it to the
quarterfinal round of the last two Bermuda Bowls,
it was their first North American title. The duo has
been playing together for less than a year, but they
have been practicing extensively online because
of distance: Chen is a first-year doctoral candidate
living in College Park MD, while Jing lives in
Beijing.
Jing praised his partner, saying, “Our new
system is very complicated, but [Chen] is very
smart: He learned it in just two months.”
The winners qualified in 34th place in Friday’s
opening round, but had took control of the lead in
the first final session. They finished with a foursession total of 120.07 IMPs (a strong 84.09 in the
first final, including carryover, and 35.98 in the
second) to edge out King and Bragin who scored
118.27.
Grossacks maintain slim
lead in Platinum Pairs
Brothers Adam Grossack and Zachary
Grossack finished the semifinal round of the Kay
Platinum Pairs with a narrow lead over Alan
Sontag and David Berkowitz.
The carryover scores for the top four pairs
going into today’s two-session final are separated
by a fraction of a masterpoint: The Grossacks
have 22.89; Sontag-Berkowitz have 22.68; Jeff
Meckstroth and Thomas Bessis have 22.50; and
Dror Padon and Zia Mahmood stand with 22.35.
Twenty-eight pairs survived the cut in
yesterday’s semifinal round.

More Do’s and Don’ts to
help your game – Part 3
By Brent Manley
Here are some tips
for taking more tricks on
defense.
DO
Lead aggressively
as a defender when it’s
clear the opponents
have a long, strong suit
they’re about to set up.
It might jangle your
nerves to lead away
from a king against a slam, but sometimes it’s
the indicated strategy. Suppose you (West) hold:
♠7 6 5
♥K 10 5 4
♦A 4 2

Based on the bidding, North likely has a
strong diamond suit that will produce a lot of
tricks once your ace is knocked out. You must
hope that your partner has the ♥Q. If so, you
have a shot at defeating this contract. Lead the

Opening lead: ♥A.
Bidding commentary: Straightforward. South
shows a hand worth at least 9 support points for
spades (likely with a five-card suit). North should
not count anything for the ♥Q J, but the hand is
still strong enough to jump to game in spades.
Defensive commentary: West cashes the ♥A
and continues with the ♥K.
Defensive commentary #2: East should ruff
partner’s ♥K at trick two and lead a club! No, he
hasn’t gone mad. You do see those diamonds in
dummy, don’t you? It is vital to take club tricks
before they go off on diamonds. Basically you
“
”
never going to defeat the slam. You took your best
shot when you led a heart.
DON’T
Try for ruffs when you have natural trump
tricks. Think about it. If declarer is in a spade
contract and you hold ♠Q J 10 9, you have two
spade tricks no matter what. It’s better to save your
trump winners for drawing declarer’s trumps to
keep him from using the low ones for ruffing.
With four of declarer’s trumps to the ace, you can
often make life difficult for declarer by leading
a strong suit or trying to hit partner’s strong suit.
Sometimes you can tell that partner has the length
in trumps, as when the opponents reach a major-suit
game via Stayman after a 1NT opening and you have
a singleton in the suit. The opponents are almost
certainly playing a 4-4 trump fit. Check this deal:
have to hope partner has the ♣A Q. This is your
last chance to do something meaningful, so don’t
blow it! Switch to a club at trick three before the
mice can get at partner’s club tricks.
When the dummy has an imposing side suit
with a strong trump fit, it is usually right for the
defense to play an attacking game. This may mean
ruffing partner’s trick with a worthless trump to
lead a suit through declarer that partner cannot
lead safely. Do it!
East should make the following opening lead
inferences: When dummy hits and the A-K of any
side suit is not visible, assume that partner does
not have both honors. The same inference, to a
lesser extent, is available when the K-Q of a side
suit is not visible. The full deal:

♣KQ2
South is in 4♠. If West leads his singleton,
South will easily make his game, losing only
the ♦A, a ruff and the trump ace. The outcome
is different if West starts with the ♥K. Declarer
wins and forces out the ♠A. A second heart
reduces South’s trump holding to the same as
West’s. Declarer now has no chance. If he draws
trumps, East wins the ♦A and the defenders cash
two heart tricks to go with the ♦A and ♠A. If
declarer abandons trumps, West will score two of
his low trumps.

Be scent-sitive!
Some people have an extreme sensitivity to
fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL
clubs, units and districts have adopted policies
that prohibit players from wearing fragrances.
The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the
matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill
of its members to refrain from using fragrances.
Because duplicate bridge requires players to
be in close proximity to each other, individuals
who suffer from fragrance-related reactions
cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among
the commonly reported symptoms are intense
headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a
trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related
problems. For these individuals, the issue is much
more serious than simply disliking a particular
smell — it’s a real health problem.
Please, if you’re going to play in a club or
a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or
scented lotions.
Appealing a ruling
Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal
a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking
with the director who delivered the original ruling.
The table director will fill out paperwork regarding
the appeal, and the appellants will explain what
they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling.
From there, the case may be handled by a variety
of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the
case, the circumstances of that particular case will
determine whether the case can be resolved by the
original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law
or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or
even a committee-type hearing which could include
bridge experts.

Slow play, especially habitual slow play, is a
violation of law and subject to penalty. When a pair
has fallen behind, it is incumbent on them to make
up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at
fault or not. All players are expected to make a
concerted effort to catch up when they have fallen
behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness.
In the absence of compelling evidence to the
contrary, the director should presume that a pair
finishing a round late by more than two or three
minutes on more than one occasion during a
session is responsible for the lateness. There is a
strong expectation that the director will penalize
such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to
increase for subsequent instances of slow play and
for chronic or egregious slow play.
While warnings typically will be given before a
penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits
the director’s authority to issue a penalty.
Players are expected to be aware, in a general
sense, of time used and remaining in a segment
in which they are playing regardless of whether a
clock is in use or a time announcement has been
made. An excuse of “no announcement” or “no
clock immediately visible” will not be considered
persuasive.
In consultation with the DIC of the tournament,
the TD may require that a particular pair not play
in a specified segment, not play against a specified
pair or not play together as a pair. The foregoing
is expected to be applied only due to egregious
circumstances or to unduly repetitious offenders.
An appeal of an action taken by a TD with
regard to time may be taken to the Director in
Charge of the tournament, and no further. For
NABC+ KO events, the TD is charged with the
responsibility to ensure that each KO match
segment finishes within the allotted time. While
a time monitor may be employed, the lack of a
monitor in no way limits the TD’s authority to
apply one or more of the remedies listed below.
The TD may choose to ignore an occasional
minor late finish. The TD may remove one or
more boards from a segment. The TD may award
no score (when neither team is more at fault), an
assigned score (when a result already exists at
one table which the TD wishes to preserve) or an
artificial score in IMPs. Every effort should be
made to remove boards before they can be played
at either table, but not having done so does not
preclude removing one or more later.

“It’s a great feeling, particularly when you
come back on the last round,” said Robinson.
At age 22 in 1979, Robinson won the first North
American Pairs. “At that time I was the youngest
person to have won a national open pairs. Five days
later this kid named Eric Rodwell won his first, and
he was a little younger than me.”
Osberg previously won three NABC titles and
two world championships in women’s events.
Second in the 0-10,000 NABC Swiss: Ellen
Kozlove, Ralph Letizia, Lee Bukstel and
Michael Wolf.
Rank
continued from page 1
ACBL Chief Executive Robert Hartman
called Rank the organization’s guiding light. “He
understood the ACBL’s complicated, not-for-profit
structure. He was that rare attorney who looked
for ways to get things done rather than focusing on
avoiding pitfalls. He was creative, he had flair.”
For almost three decades, Rank produced
fundraising shows featuring major celebrities such
as Bob Hope, Betty Ford, Steve Allen, Tommy
Tune and Gene Kelly. He brought that same talent
and creativity to the ACBL as he developed bridge
musicals as entertainment for many NABCs. He
was in the process of producing “There is Nothing
Like a Game” for the Fall NABC in San Diego
when he died.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 p.m.
Tuesday, March 14, in Suite 1814 at the Westin.

NAP–C Pairs compete for
President’s Cup
Players in the North American Pairs Flight C,
a grassroots event limited to players who have not
yet become Life Masters and have less than 500
masterpoints, will begin competition today for the
President’s Cup.
The trophy was presented in 1942 by Morgan
Howard, ACBL president that year. The trophy
previously honored the winners of the President’s
Pairs event, held at the Summer NABC.
The competition began last summer at the
local club level and qualifiers then advanced to
unit competition. Those qualifiers advanced to the
district finals and three pairs from each district –
more, depending upon attendance – qualified for
the North American final.

“Both sides play the same suit, one of them
crazy” is an old adage. It certainly applied to this
deal from the second qualifying session of the
Platinum Pairs, where quite a few Easts overcalled
in spades over 1NT – and lived to regret it,
typically losing two tricks in each suit.
Where Jill Levin was South, she had to guess
which suit to pick in this auction:
West
North
East
South
1NT
2♣ (1)

?
(1) One-suited hand.
She guessed spades, and won the diamond lead
in hand to play a club up. West won the ace to exit
with the ♦K. Levin won the ♦A to play the ♠A and
another spade. East took this with the ♠Q to play
the ♥J, then won the next trump to play another
heart. These cards remained:

When declarer played a diamond, the best East
could do was discard. Declarer won the ♦J, cashed
the ♠J, pitching a heart, then led a diamond up. East
could win his two spades but had to concede the
last trick, declarer’s eighth. Plus 110 for making 2♠
was below average for North-South – compared to
plus 150 for 2♠ by East down three – but it was still
a nicely played hand.

Convention card reminder
Each player is required to have a convention
card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a
session. The convention card must include the first
and last name of each member of the partnership,
and the cards must be identical.
If a director determines that neither player has
a substantially completed card, the partnership may
play only the Standard American Yellow Card and
may use only standard carding. This restriction
may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent
round after convention cards have been properly
prepared and approved by the director. Further, the
partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint
penalty for each board played, commencing with
the next round and continuing until the restriction
is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at
the discretion of the director.
If the director determines the partnership has at
least one substantially completed convention card
but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations,
the director may give warnings or assign such
penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the
circumstances.
The objective of these warnings and penalties
is the encouragement of full compliance with
ACBL regulations.

You play 3NT as West, and when North leads
a diamond, you appear to have nine tricks, but
look again. If you drive out the ♣K, you have no
entries to your hand. The defenders can lock you in
dummy with spades and collect three spades, a club
and a heart.
So at trick two, you lead the ♣Q, and everyone
follows low. What next?
At the table, I tried the ♣A and another club,
and Louk Verhees (South) discarded a discouraging
spade and diamond. So Ricco van Prooijen played
a heart after taking the ♣K for down one.
I wished I had had enough nerve to follow the
♣Q with the ♣10! Now, if North wins, I might go
down two … but if he ducks, I’d own him for life!

Transportation assistance
For wheelchair users, a shuttle is available
from the either the Westin or Sheraton to locations
within a 1 mile radius, including Union Station, the
World War I Museum and nearby restaurants such
as Lidia’s, Jack Stack Barbecue, etc. The service
is available from 3 to 10 p.m. Guests can request a
ride from a valet attendant outside either hotel.
Electronic device policy
The electronic device policy at NABCs allows
players to bring electronic devices such as cell
phones into the playing area provided that such
devices are turned off. Further, any such equipment
must not be visible during the session.
A violation of the policy will result in an
automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board
(or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the
first offense. A second offense will result in
disqualification from the event.

Use of the bidding box —
Alerts and Announcements
When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires
that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at
the same time.
When making an Announcement, use the
Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap
the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts
or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents
are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been
made.

and be charged for the total number of sessions
played after the event is over.
The Silver Ribbon Pairs champs in 2016 were
Dave Westfall and Craig Zastera.

Monitoring
At this and future North American
Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+
events with real-time cameras. The images will
be recorded and available for later inspection
and review by officials. The images will also
be available for public viewing via YouTube
within two to three months of each NABC. Your
participation in such events includes your consent
to be recorded.
By general monitoring of the session and
participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source
of information that may be useful in determining
facts and settling issues arising from some types of
ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please
summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

Notice of binding
arbitration
By becoming an ACBL member or
renewing your membership in the ACBL, you
expressly agree to waive your right to have
disputes between you and the ACBL resolved
in a court of law and agree to accept the use
of binding arbitration before the American

Play in a World Championship
without qualifying
In most world championships, competitors
must qualify in their home countries and they are
limited to playing with partners and teammates
from their home countries. Qualification generally
involves tournament play organized by the U.S.
Bridge Federation.
In 1997, the World Bridge Federation started
a new event open to players and teams without the
same-country restrictions or the need to qualify. It’s
the World Transnational Open Teams, the first of
which was played in Hamamet, Tunisia.
The 11th WTOT will be played in Lyon,
France, during the World Teams Championships,
Aug. 12-26. Qualifying rounds of the Transnational
Teams begins on Monday, Aug. 21. The event
concludes Aug. 26.
So long as the participants are in good standing
with their national bridge organizations, teams can
be made up of players from different countries.
ACBL is a national bridge organization.
In Lyon, there will be side games for club
players and Junior/Girl/Youngsters competitions,
plus games for players 9 to 16 years old.
Lyon is the third-largest city in France and
is considered the nation’s gastronomical capital.
WBF President Gianarrigo Rona said the high
season for tourism will have passed by the time the
tournament begins, which means lower hotel rates.
Also, he said, the temperatures will be mild.
There is easy access to Lyon by train from
several European cities, including Paris and
Geneva, Switzerland. “Everything is ready,” he
said. For more information about the Orlando and
Lyon tournaments, visit www.worldbridge.org
Junior Teams Vie to
Compete in 2018 World
Championships in China
The USBF is pleased to announce that the 2017
Junior United States Bridge Championships
(JUSBC) will be held December 27–30/31, 2017,
at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta. Players will compete in four categories:
• Open U16 (born in 2003 or later)
• Open U21 (born 1998 or later)
• Open U26 (born 1993 or later)
• Women U26 (Rona Cup; born 1993 or later)
At least one team in each category will qualify
to represent the USA at the World Youth Teams
Bridge Championships in China in the summer of
2018. (Sending an U16 team is dependant upon
securing enough chaperones willing to travel at
their own expense).
Teams may enter with four, five or six players;
winning teams with fewer than six players will
be augmented so that six-person teams represent
the USA in China. Depending on the number of
teams entered in each category, an online (BBO)
qualifier may be required on one or two weekends
in September. Further details and entry forms will
be available this summer.
The schedule of play in Atlanta will depend
on the number of teams competing and will likely
be different for the four categories. In all cases we
plan for participants to play at least two days before
anyone is eliminated. All matches at the JUSBC
will be played with screens.

Stop!
Using the Stop card during the auction requests
the next bidder to pause 10 seconds after a jump
in the bidding. TD Matt Koltnow explains that
using the Stop card is optional, and that while the
procedure is included in the regulations and is
not a law, employing the Stop card helps players
comply with Law 73D: “It is desirable for players to
maintain steady tempo and unvarying manner.”
The purpose of the Stop card is two-fold:
1. It helps the opponents avoid transmitting
unauthorized information by acting too slowly
or too quickly.
2. It helps all four players “play bridge” by
looking at the auction rather than reading
meanings into fast bids and hesitations.
Players who employ the Stop card must
consistently use it in all jump-bid situations, lest
the inconsistency be interpreted as information. For
example, a consistent Stop card user must employ it
preceding 3NT in an auction such as 1NT–(Pass)–
3NT, and the next bidder should still pause and look
at their cards before making a call.
“Taking time, even in an easy auction, allows
you to use that same 10 seconds that you’re legally
entitled to after any skip bid,” says Koltnow.
Like the Alert card, the Stop card is used for the
benefit of the opponents, not partner. Koltnow says
that more experienced players are expected to take
time after a jump in the bidding whether or not a
Stop card is used.

Today’s Sponsors and Memorials
ACBL Past President
Phyllis J. Harlan Day
By the Kansas City NABC host
committee
It is our pleasure to honor Phyllis Harlan
on this special day. Phyllis has devoted literally
decades of her life to representing District 15 on
the ACBL Board of Directors. She was also the
driving force behind the selection of Kansas City as
the host of the 2017 Spring NABC.
Phyllis is loyal, honest, trustworthy and fun.
She has been an exceptionally hard worker for her
home unit (Unit 167, Oklahoma City), District 15
and the ACBL. She has served on her unit, district
and ACBL boards for many years.
Phyllis served as president of the ACBL in
2014, and she traveled the entire breadth of the
North America with her husband Bill (who died
in 2016), meeting as many members as possible.
Phyllis believes strongly in the social aspects of
bridge. She wants to make sure that everyone,
regardless of expertise or experience, has a good
time. Great hospitality, according to Phyllis, is the
key to bringing back the fun side of our game. As
we make new acquaintances, we all become part of
the “extended family” of bridge players.
Thank you, Phyllis, for your many years of
work and dedication to keeping bridge alive in
District 15. Nobody does it better!
In Memory of Bill Harlan
Bill Harlan was a very good bridge player who
loved the game, but his family even more. Bill and
Phyllis were married for 57 years. They enjoyed
many travels to museums throughout the world.
Every year, they looked forward to their travels to
St. Martin. Today, Phyllis will join three of Bill’s
former partners to enjoy her day playing in the
Daylight Swiss Teams.
Students Honoring Don Stack
Don Stack, a Grand Life Master from the
Kansas City area, has taught many appreciative
students over the years. He instructs with kindness,
patience and a positive attitude. He takes time
before a session to answer any questions, and he
always stays afterwards to review hands. No matter
how many times his students lead away from an
ace in a suit contract, miss a Bergen raise and leave
him to play 3♣ or 3♦, or fail to trump from the
short side, he plays steadily and never gets ruffled.
Don’s students range from players brand new to
the game to seasoned Life Masters. He is generous
with his time and knowledge, not only to them,
but to anyone who asks him a bridge question. His
students hold him in the highest esteem because
he’s not only a great teacher and player, he’s a nice
guy. They would also tell you that Don Stack has
taught them more about the game of bridge than
any book could.
