Deland High School
Class Syllabus
Teacher: Yanina Brignoni
Class: Español 2 PRE-IB
E-mail: [email protected]
Class goals: Throughout this academic year students are expected to learn the necessary
skills to be able to communicate effectively in Spanish. To achieve this, students will be
exposed to meaningful activities that will allow them to practice Spanish through the four
language arts components: speaking, reading, listening and writing. Students who take
advantage of the course will be prepared to engage in real life conversation with an
intermediate level of understanding. They will also be able to better appreciate the diverse
aspects of the many cultures within the Spanish-speaking world.
Required texts and materials:
Español 2 textbook and workbook
 Spanish-English dictionary
 loose-leaf paper
 pens (black/blue)
 120-page, college-ruled, plastic cover notebook
 highlighter
 whiteout correction ribbon
***** All topics will be studied during the year. These require the study of grammar and
verb tenses. Please make sure that both, you and your child are aware of the importance of
daily conscientious study. *****
Methods of assessment: Three categories established are: diagnostic, formative and
summative. General assessment formats: announced and unannounced written and/or
oral quizzes, notebook grade, lesson/unit tests, mid-term, final exam, oral presentations,
homework, computer assignments, projects, and active participation. Three or more
summative tests/activities will be administered during any given quarter.
Notebook requirements: The Spanish notebook must be kept organized, clean and neat at all
times.
1
Grading policy: Grades will be entered weekly on Pinnacle Grading and will be weighted
as follows:
40%- Formative Assessments: class work, homework and projects, others
60%- Summative Assessments: quizzes, written and oral tests, others
Only students who have consistently and actively participated and demonstrated
academic interest and performance will be allowed to repeat only one summative test
during any given quarter, should they have the need. At the time, a new version of
the test will be administered. Please keep in mind that allowing a student to retake is
a teacher’s decision based on individual student merit. Once a decision is made, the
student agrees to comply with his/her retake appointment and remediation
requirement. Should the student not communicate with the teacher when in need of
a retake appointment change, the teacher will understand that the student no longer
wants to retake the summative and thus, the opportunity of retake will be forfeited.
A retake will require additional intense work commitment from the part of the
student.
Please be informed that as a teacher I reserve the right to consistently OVERRIDE
grades during the second and fourth grading periods. Please be aware that overriding
could mean either increasing or lowering the grade. This is a process that takes
performance, attendance, participation, and all academic elements into account. A lot
of thought and analysis is involved before a decision is made. It is not a preferential
treatment, but rather a wholesome and fair assessment of a student’s merit. I use the
override privilege only in special circumstances and very rarely.
Plagiarism: DHS plagiarism policy will be strictly enforced.
Electronic devices: Electronic devices such as I pods, I pads, MP3’s and cell phones are to
be kept inside the student’s bag and in silent mode at all times. It is preferred not to even have
them in class at all!
Make-up policy: Student and parents are expected to access Pinnacle for weekly class
agendas to find out what the student missed. According to school policy students are given one
day for each day absent to turn in make-up work. An absent note is required the day the student
returns to class.
Study Policy: Both parent and student understand that in order to be successful in the study
and learning of the foreign language, consistency and repetition are necessary strategies.
Therefore, the student commits to dedicating a minimum of twenty minutes daily for
reviewing lessons. An IB student should put in more time depending on his/her language
aptitude.
Classroom rules:
2
1- Respectful and appropriate behavior towards the teacher and classmates is always
expected. Students are expected to be cooperative and attentive.
2- Respect the equipment and furnishings of the classroom.
3- Students are expected to attend class daily and arrive on time with all required learning
