DENVER GOLF CLUB
Newsletter March 2017
Welcome
A warm welcome to our March
newsletter, surely Spring must
nearly be here. The course is
looking fantastic and the greens are also running
well. Since Mike, Jason and Peter have managed
the first cuts of the year it is looking like a real
quality golf course – well done everyone.
I have tried to include as much information for
you regarding various competitions, both results
of ones already played and times etc for ones yet
to come.
Message from Mike Brown – Course Manager
We are working to get the course in
good order for the season ahead and
hopefully will soon open up the 8th
and 9th tees. Please can all members
ensure that they check the white board
on the left as you enter the clubhouse for any
notes regarding the course. Any issues, please
talk to us and we will do our best to resolve them.
I hope you all have a good season of golf and
competitions, keep trying for that elusive hole in
one!! Happy golfing.
New Jumpers and Shirts Available
Jason has started a new line of jumpers and shirts
which, at no extra cost, can include either just
your name or the club logo and your name. Just
ask a member of staff for details.

Winner
Our February treasure hunt competition was won
by Bob Weston who won a bottle of Martini
Rosso. Congratulations!!
February Fun Day
Our February Fun Day was such a
good day enjoyed by everyone – 30
people entered this competition. The
winning team was Adrian Horrod, Andy Jupp,
Alan Holden and John Green. The target shoot
out challenge was won by Dave Hotchkin. Well
done to everyone!
St David’s Day Competition
This was the first year we have run
this event and although not as well attended as we
had hoped an enjoyable round of golf was had by
all. The winners were 1st Angela Draper, 2nd
Brian Lister and 3rd Irene Evans with Irene also
winning closest to the pin. Congratulations!
St Patrick’s Day Competition
This was a really well attended event
with 22 competitors. It was a real
challenge as Mike and Jason had set
out the course so that it was ‘played backwards’
starting at the 9th green and working round to the
1st. The winner was Andy Simmons with an
incredible round of 59, 2nd was Angela Draper, 3rd
George Lawrence and 4th Rod Edwards. The prize
for nearest the pin – a litre bottle of whisky kindly
donated by Mo Stimpson – was won by John
Ireland. It was a great day and thanks must go to
the ‘team’ at Denver for preparing the course
appropriately for us; the team being Mike and
Jason who prepared the course and Phillip Day
and Peter Draper who positioned the holes so
carefully for us!
Competitions
Several recent incidents have given us cause to
look at the practical organisation of our
competitions, particularly in respect of teeing off.
To clarify matters, where possible, any designated
three ball matches should tee off on the first tee
behind any two ball matches. This is to assist in
the speed of play around the course, but should the
starters believe that any other start position is
appropriate, they will advise all other players
before the matches start.
In the event of a player being unable to finish a
round, there should be a reasonable explanation
for this. An obvious injury explains itself, but
where an illness causes withdrawal, the cause may
not be quite so obvious and can sometimes cause
ill-feeling especially where a playing partner is
left stranded. It seems to me therefore that there is
an obligation on any competitor to ensure that
they will be able to complete any competiton that
they start.
My final thoughts for this month also relate to
speed of play and in particular the letting through
of faster matches. If you find that you have fallen
a clear hole behind the match in front, it is
expected of you to let the following match through
if they are close enough to have to queue, even if
they are playing in the same competition.
I hope that you will consider these thought and
whenever possible, implement them so that we
might all enjoy our golf with the minimum of
angst. Thanks.

Pitch Marks
A gentle reminder again, that if we
all repair our pitch marks while we
are playing it improves the greens
for everyone.
Container
A reminder to our members who store their clubs
and equipment in the container; please can you
ensure that everything is cleaned before being put
away. An enormous amount of mud and grass
gathers in the container which then has to be
cleaned out by a member of staff. Thanks.
Easter Eggs
Last year we held a fun event at Easter when we
all brought in an Easter egg: these were then
donated to the Riding for the Disabled in our area.
This year, although we are not having an event on
the Easter weekend, we would still like to ask for
donations of Easter eggs, they do
not have to be expensive, even a
cream egg would be fantastic.
These children really enjoyed the
Easter Egg Hunt our donated Easter eggs achieved
for them last year. If you would like to contribute,
please can you leave your eggs at the golf club by
Good Friday. Thank you.
