Owensboro Family YMCA Adult Volleyball Rules The Owensboro Family YMCA, hereafter referred to as the Y, Adult Volleyball league is governed by rules designed to meet the following goals: 1. 2. Sportsmanship will be promoted at all times. Player’s health and safety shall be promoted at all times. A. Age a. Participants in the Adult Volleyball League must be 16 years of age or older. B. Sportsmanship a. At the conclusion of the game both teams will meet and shake hands. C. Playing Area a. b. Out of bounds includes the wall floor or objects outside the court dimensions. A ball hitting the ceiling or other suspended object and landing on the opposite side is a dead ball. A team may continue play if they hit the ball and it touches the ceiling or other suspended object on their side and comes back down on their side, and if it was not their third consecutive hit. D. Equipment a. b. The game ball will be provided by the Y. In the interest of safety, the following equipment rules shall be enforced: i. ii. c. e. Knee pads are strongly recommended, but will not be provided by the Y. Exposed jewelry such as earrings of any kind, wrist watches, bracelets, neck chains, rings, and nose jewelry cannot be worn during the game. Team names and shirts must be appropriate. The shirt is not provided by the Y. Players must wear tennis shoes, no hard sole shoes or black sole shoes will be allowed. E. The Game a. The match will have the following rules: a. USVA rules apply to all games. b. The match will consist of 3 games, not best 2 out of 3. c. A team which has scored 25 rally points (points are scored regardless of who is serving) and is at least 2 points ahead is the winner. If the leading team does not have a 2 point advantage, play shall continue until one team has a 2 point advantage d. The service alternates when there is a foul by the serving team and the ball will be awarded to its opponents who shall rotate clockwise one position. e. Let serves are good (net on serve is played) f. Front line players may contact the ball from any position inside or outside the court except while positioned across the center line or it’s out of bounds extension. g. A player shall not play the ball twice in succession unless there is simultaneous contact by teammates. h. A team shall not play the ball more than 3 times before it crosses the net or enters the opponent’s side. i. Contacting the net or any part of it while the ball is in play is prohibited, except by the player’s hair, or unless the force of the ball by an opponent pushes the net into the player. j. Reaching over the net is only permitted to follow through with a hit or an attempt to hit, or to block or an attempt to block. k. A serve may not be blocked. l. The choice of serving, receiving or sides shall be determined by a coin toss. For subsequent games, teams will change sides. m. The loser of the previous game shall serve first in the next game. He/she will be responsible for point, net and foul calls, time and keeping score. iii. Line judges may be provided by the teams as volunteers, but both teams must agree on the person or persons responsible. iv. All calls are final; no arguing with the referee will be tolerated. v. If there is a difference of opinion on a point then the point may be played over at the official’s discretion. c. Roster: i. ii. iii. iv. v. A team shall consist of 6 players in all matches. A forfeit will be called if a team cannot field 4 players at game time. Rosters are set when turned into the YMCA. Roster changes must be approved by the Wellness Director. Any person that plays on a team on which they are not on the roster will cause that team to forfeit any and all games in which that person participated. Any team to forfeit 3 or more regular season games will not be allowed to participate in the end of season tournament. Page 2 of 2
