SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016
The 7th and the 8th graders had
and sat down to eat our lunches.
Oregon Historical Society Field
Trip
Jenny Davanh

by
went on a field trip Downtown to
the Oregon Historical Society.
The 7th graders went on the 26th
of September while the 8th
graders went on the 27th. We
went there to learn about Oregon
History which was interesting and
fun considering we went to the
food carts after. We rode the tri
mat down to the OHS which was
crowded but we can live with it, it
took a while but on the way back
it was faster going back to school.
In the museum, there were lots of
artifacts and life that other
people were living differently
than we are living today.
“Going down to the food carts
was better than going to the
museum”, students says as we
walked towards the food carts
Walking back was tiring
considering that everyone had to
walk back to our bus which was a
10 block walk back and we had to
hurry before we missed our bus.
“It was so tiring to walk back to
the bus, it was 10 blocks!”
Everyone had fun while riding the
max downtown, even though it
was crowded we managed it. We
learned new information about
the States and the Native
Americans. The food carts was
the best since some of us brought
some money to spend there the
food was delicious, but going
back was a pain.
Meeting Mrs. Wiggins
As you all know Vestal has been

Meeting Mrs. Wiggins
By Anna Vu and Norah Bean
Even though it was a little
challenging not seeing the
teachers we have come to know,
we are looking forward to building
new connections and memories
with the new staff. We have had
the
great
opportunity
of
interviewing the new 7th and 8th
grade science and elective STEM
teacher, Mrs. Wiggins.
Q: Why did you decide to work at
Vestal?
A: I moved to Portland from Chicago
in June. I didn’t know a lot about the
PPS school district, but I wanted to
work in a diverse space, and Vestal
gave me that opportunity.
Q: How long have you been a
teacher?
A: “I graduated my teacher prep
program in 2012.” This is my third full
year of teaching and I also taught 2
partial years.
2
A: I was
a food
scientist
, but I
didn’t
feel like
my
work
was a
making
a
differen
ce.
When I
was in
school I
had
some
aweso
me
teacher
s and
some not so good teachers.
Q: Was science your favorite subject
in school?
A: I LOVE SCIENCE! It has always
been my favorite subject in school. I
even won my fifth grade science fair.
Q: When you were our age, what did
you want to be when you grew up?
Q: How do you like Vestal so far?
A: It has been a little challenging for
the first week or so, but I have
students that make me smile and are
very welcoming.
A:I changed my mind a lot, but in
middle school I wanted to be a nurse
or a lawyer. It wasn’t until I took
chemistry that I developed a love for
science.
Q: How are you adjusting to
Portland?
A: I LOVE PORTLAND! The air is
fresh and people are very nice.
Q: What is are your favorite things to
do out of work?
A: I like to sleep, go bowling, cook
and watch SpongeBob.
Q: What is something you would like
your students know about you?
A: When I’m no longer their teacher I
want them to pursue their dreams
and live a successful life. I’m also a
fun person if you get to know me.
Q: What is your pet peeves?
A: I really don’t like mean people, I
just don’t understand why they have
to be mean. I also really can’t
concentrate when they are distracting
noise and background noises.
Q: Have you always taught middle
school?
A: It is my second time teaching
middle school. For a while I taught
9th and 11th grade.
Q: Any fun facts about you?
A: I have five sets of twins in my
family. I am an only child. I was in a
sorority at the Alabama A&M and I
went to Washington State to get my
teaching degree. The great thing is
that my husband is also scientist.
Q: Why did you decide to become a
teacher?
Q: What is your nickname?
I don’t have one, but I’m up for nice
suggestions.
Q: Do you have any pets?
A: I don’t have no pets. :( I would love
to have a Labrador someday.
Q: What did you struggle on when
you were in school?
A; I wasn’t a strong math student.
This makes it hard to study science
since there’s a lot of math involved in
science. I needed a lot of math
support, but I got better at it and “was
able to come in on a whole new
level.”
Q: What is your most embarrassing
story?
A: In high school, my mom didn’t like
my boyfriend. We both were on the
same track team. I don’t know what
my mom said to my dad and my
brothers, but they came to track
practice yelling my boyfriend’s name.
Then to make things worse my
friends kept saying my brothers were
cute, but during all that, I was busy
finishing my track workout.
Q: What is your most memorable
moment in all your teaching years?
A: “It would definitely have to be
when I left Chicago.” I had an all-girls
advisory and they threw me a going
away party. The same day we had a
school wide circle and all my juniors
came on stage to give me gifts and
flowers.

What’s Happening
In 1st Grade?
By Abigail Kohn
I interviewed Mrs. Tucker on
Wednesday
October
5th
2016. This was in Mrs.
Tucker’s classroom which is
Room 101. The children in her
class
were
doing
their
Learning Centers. She does
this to reinforce learning
through
creation
and
exploration. They have free
choosing time.
Transitioning
from
kindergarten to first grade
can be stressful, so Mrs.
Tucker likes giving them
exploring time. This is so
they can remember learning
can be fun. Students are
learning how to be problem
solvers through exploring and
free
play.
Mrs.
Tuckers
believes,
“Every student in my class
are brilliant scholars that
have the potential to surpass
expectations when given the
opportunity to explore their
curiosity”. They are still
3
working
towards
their
problem solving skills. And
Mrs. Tucker strives to,
“Teach every child like
they're my own.” Mrs. Tucker
appreciates the middle school
students going around and
learning
about
other
classrooms.
A: “A little over two
years.”
Q: What’s your favorite
thing about working
here?
A: “The people who make
up a community”.
Q: Did you have a
different job before
working at Vestal?
A: “I worked as a
preschool teacher.”
SO SAD TO SAY
GOODBYE!
By Jenny Davanh &
Nathin Willard
Ms. Kim is the Sun School
teacher for Vestal and
will be leaving from an
unexpected family issue.
We’ll be sorry to see her
go.
Q: Were your years here
at Vestal enjoyable?
A: “It was very
enjoyable!”
Q: How long have you
worked here at Vestal?
Q: Where do you see
yourself in 5 years?
A: “I see myself caring
for aging parents and
volunteering in a
community.”
Q: Do you think you’ll
miss Vestal?
A: “Already do because
you interviewed me”.

STUDENT SURVEY
MUSIC CHARTS
BY NORAH BEAN & ANNA VU
BY JASMIN ZUNIGA REYES
One responsibility that we have
at the Vestal’s newspaper is to
conduct a student survey. After
some thought, we decided to do
it based on PokemonGo teams
and popular shoe brands. To
get everyone’s opinion we went
to each class and passed out
slips for both surveys and
asked students to participate,
checking the box that applies to
them. Are you surprised by the
results?

Video Game
Reviews
by Jasmin Zuniga-Reyes
Unravel
‘’It is based on a story of
where a story is told’’
Have you heard of a
character that is made
by yarn?
Yarny is made out of yarn, a
small figure to be exact,
however that doesn’t stop him
from going on an adventure.
5
The game is allowed on Xbox
One and PlayStation 4. You
can also play it on a computer
but
on the computer you can only
play a trial, for up to ten hours,
although if you are lucky
enough of having a ‘EA
account’
then you may have the data
you saved.
On the official site it is stated
that “Music is the voice of
Unravel. What the story doesn’t
say with words or text, we
figured we could say with
music instead. Every place
Yarny goes, every high and low
along that journey, the music
speaks volumes about it.” The
soundtrack, created by Frida
Johansson and Henrik Oja
assumes that there are no
words that need to be spoken
throughout
the
game.
The attention to surroundings
around Yarny is very well done,
and it seems very realistic. It
must have taken a lot of time of
creating the areas. There are
puzzles inside the game and
you must use Yarny’s thread to
swing along the tree as well as
take a ride on a flying kite.

FUNBRAIN
Funbrain is an educational browser game website for children and adults. It was on this site that “Diary of
a Wimpy Kid” was first published before being turned into a book. If you want to play the other games on
Funbrain it is your choice. The games on Funbrain are math, and puzzle games. You can get to Funbrain
on the computer. Why would you play this game if you ask, because you can have fun. You can get to the
game for free (since it is free online) and you need a computer, then go to web browser and then go to
Google and type “Funbrain” and look for Mighty Guy 1 (which is like in the bottom) or you can just play the
other games if you want to. I got to play Might Guy 1. Check it out!
In Mighty Guy 1 you have to try to save someone by running through different levels using “Space bar”
(jump), “Right arrow”, “Left arrow”, and “Down arrow” (duck). You have to time the jump over a moving
donut and duck to not be touched by a rolling donuts (because they can bounce). You cannot be touched
by any object except the truck. (Even I couldn’t pass the level). Mr. Landis played the game and he lost
on the 2nd level. He said it is an addicting game and very interesting too. He wanted to try to beat it but
have to leave. Practice a lot because it kinda hard to beat through and play it if you want to. Mr. Landis
said “It not the most fun game but it makes you want to keep playing to beat it”. There are also Mighty Guy
2 that continued where it left off in the end in Mighty Guy 1 and Mighty Guy 3 coming soon.

with their friends/family. Here are
some opinions about the 3
different restaurants that the
majority of students have chosen.
“I love Panda Express! Olive
Garden has good breadsticks.
Buffalo Wild Wings has the best
sauces for chicken wings. I would

breadsticks. Panda Express has the
best fortune cookies I ever tasted.”

her parents. Students at Vestal had
different favorite characters and
opinions, but overall agreed
Finding Dory was a great sequel to
Finding Nemo.
BY: Norah B. and Anna V.
Hello! We are Norah and Anna,
8th graders from the journalism
elective class. We are in charge of
movie and food reviews, as well as
the student survey. We have
interviewed some elementary and
middle school classes, asking their
opinion on new movies. We hope
this gives you some insight on the
movies you have already watched
and will give you a sneak peak into
movies you haven’t seen. Enjoy!
ZOOTOPIA:
FINDING DORY:
Many of the middle school students
and elementary students grew up
loving Finding Nemo, so we
thought it was perfect for us to see
what their opinion was on Finding
Dory. Finding Dory is the sequel to
Finding Nemo, but instead Dory
goes on a adventure to find her
parents and seeks her memories
she has forgotten. This movie also
shows flashbacks into Dory’s past
and not to mention the adorable
baby Dory. Finding Dory was rated
94% by Rotten Tomatoes and
7.7/10 on IMDB. The students at
Vestal agree with these ratings, but
some feel that Nemo was a better
character than Dory. Conner from
2nd grade for example felt that
Nemo was better, but Sam from
Mrs.Wiggin's 8th grade homeroom
argued that Dory was inspiring,
because she never gave up looking
for her parents. Also other students
were amazed by the scene work.
2nd grader Grayson’s favorite
scene was the part were Dory had
to escape the sea snake. Ellie from
3rd grade also liked the parts
where Dory had flashbacks about
A bunny moves to the big city to
make her dream of being a police
officer come true. After arriving in
Zootopia “Where anyone can be
anything,” Judy discovers that it’s
going to be harder than she
thought. Finally after struggling
through the police academy, Judy
becomes the first bunny cop in
Zootopia. Many animals go missing
and it’s up to her to solve the
mystery, with the help of a hustler
fox or her career is over. Zootopia
was rated 98% by Rotten Tomatoes
and 8.1/10 from IMDB. Students at
Vestal agree that Zootopia is a
good movie, but some argue that it
has some flaws. Ashley from 8th
grade says Zootopia has a great
concept and plot. Eric from 3rd
grade also explains that he liked
how Judy the bunny cop
persevered and became a police
officer. However Taline Garris in
8th grade and in Mrs.Wiggins
homeroom disagrees, she didn't
like the discrimination between
prey and predators. In conclusion
Zootopia is an awesome family
film, but like all movies there are
some people who
disagree.
