Football
Football is the most played sport in Slovenia. We have 3 divisions (division 1, 2 and 3) and more than
50 teams.
Slovenia national football team
The Slovenian national football team is the national
football team of Slovenia and is controlled by the
Football Association of Slovenia. The team played
their first match in 1992 after the split of Yugoslavia
in 1991. It qualified for major tournaments like EURO
2000, FIFA World Cup 2002 and 2010.

Stožice Stadium is a brand new stadium located in

the capital city of Ljubljana. The stadium has a capacity
of 16.038 seats and will be one of the main venues for the national team in the future.
Samir Handanović
Samir Handanović is Slovenian football player. He was born on 14th July in 1984. He plays as a
goalkeeper for Italian football club AC Udinese and the Slovenian national team. He is the one of the
World’s best goalkeepers. He got award for the best goalkeeper in Serie A (Italy) in 2012. He is
famous for saving penalties. In one season he saved 6 penalties. That’s his record. He is followed by
many top European clubs.

Basketball
Basketball is very popular sport in Slovenia.
Slovenia national basketball team
The Slovenian National Basketball Team is a team that is selected by the Basketball Federation of
Slovenia to compete in major international basketball events in representation of Slovenia.
Slovenia ended on the 6th place in the Eurobasket
2005 and thus qualified for Basketball World
Championship 2006. Since the independence of the
country in 1991, the team competed at every
European Basketball Championship but failed to
advance to the next group until 2005.

Stožice Arena
Arena Stožice is a multi-purpose indoor arena
located in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It was designed by
Slovenian Sadar Vuga d.o.o. architects and is the
biggest indoor arena in the country. It lies in the
Bežigrad district, north of the city centre. The arena
is part of the Stožice Sports Park sports complex.

Saša Vujačić
Aleksandar "Sasha" Vujačić is a Slovenian basketball player. He was
born on 8th March in 1984. He plays for Anadolu Efes S.K. in Turkey
and for Slovenian national team. In July 2011 he signed a one-year
deal and an option for another with Anadolu Efes S.K.

Slovenia men’s national ice hockey team
The Slovenian men's national ice hockey team, also known as the Lynx (Slovene: Risi), is currently
ranked 18th in the world by IIHF as of the 2011 IIHF World Ranking. The team is controlled by the Ice
Hockey Federation of Slovenia. Slovenia
has only 943 players. Their best ever
record is 13th place and highest ranking is
15th. Their current coach is Matjaž
Kopitar, father of NHL player Anže Kopitar.

represents Slovenia in international handball
matches. The current coach is Zvonimir
Serdarušić. On European Men’s Handball
Championship they got silver medal.

Athletics
Most known athletes in Slovenia are Primož Kozmus and Mitja Petkovšek.
Primož Kozmus was born on 30th September in 1979 in Novo Mesto. He is
a Slovenian hammer thrower and the current Olympic champion. His gold
medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2009 World
Championships in Berlin made him the first ever Slovenian athlete to win
both titles.
Mitja Petkovšek was born on 6th February in 1977 in Ljubljana. He is a
Slovenian gymnast. Petkovšek competes on the parallel bars, where he is
World Champion (2005, 2007), World Cup Finals Champion (2000, 2004),
and European Champion (2000, 2007, 2008).
Skiing
In Slovenia we have alpine skiing in Pohorje,
ski jumping in Planica and cross country
skiing in Pokljuka. The most popular
slovenian skiers are Tina Maze and Petra
Majdič.
Tina Maze
Tina is the most successful Slovenian alpine
ski racer. She has learned skiing at the age
of 3. She has won 11 World cup victories.

Petra Majdič is the most successful Slovenian
cross country skier. In 2010 she was the Slovene
of the year. So far she has won 24 world cup
victories.

In Slovenia we have Franja marathon.

Badminton
The Slovenian National Badminton Championships
The Slovenian National Badminton Championships is a tournament organized to crown the best
badminton players in Slovenia. The tournament started in 1958 and is held every year.

Luka Petrič is Slovenian badminton player. He was born on 10th October in 1984 in Maribor. He plays
for Badminton club Banik Maribor. Currently he is the best Slovenian badminton player.
