NETTA UMPIRING DO’s and DON’Ts If unsure of any Netta rule please contact your Club Umpires’ Convenor Do’s Umpiring Do walk onto the court to umpire. Do offer help, some teams need more help than others. Each Netta age group differs, umpire to the teams’ standard. Do blow the whistle to stop play if an infringement occurs. Do offer simple explanations of what has gone wrong when an infringement occurs. The players The rules Scoring a goal Defending Obstructing Contact Throw in Offside Over-a-third Possession Do make sure teams change ends at the end of each quarter. Do allow teams to borrow rather than play short. Do allow players to wear unrestrictive warm clothing with their uniform Do allow some shuffling to gain balance. Do award a free pass to the opposing team if player shuffles forward. Do allow players to hold the ball for up to 6 seconds. Do award a free pass when the player holds the ball for longer than 6 seconds. Do allow a goal to be scored through either or both goal rings. Do demonstrate how far 120cm (4ft) is. Do allow one-on-one defending all over the court. Do award a penalty pass/shot if players are defending closer than 120cm (4ft). Do apply normal rules and award a penalty pass/shot if the opposing team obstructs. Do apply normal contact rules and award a penalty pass/shot to the opposing team. Do show players where to place their foot when throwing in. Do re-take the throw in, if taken incorrectly. Do apply normal throw in rules. Do help players remember where they should be. Do apply normal rules & award a free pass for offside if player has the ball. Do apply normal rules if the ball goes untouched in any “third”. Do call ‘first possession’ if one player clearly has the ball first. Do apply normal rules for a ‘toss-up’. Do’s Have Fun! Don’ts Don’t be officious, be friendly, smile a lot. Don’t be afraid to help players, or offer suggestions on play. Don’t change umpires during the game. Don’t allow the playing patches to be covered. Don’t allow shuffling forward footwork. Don’t allow holding the ball for longer than 6 seconds. Don’t allow 2 players to defend a shot, but they may have their arms up to catch a rebound. Don’t allow players on court to raise their arms if they are closer than 120cxm (4ft) from the player throwing the ball. Don’t stand players out of play for obstruction. Don’t stand players out of play for contact. Don’t allow players to step onto the line or the court when taking a throw-in. Don’t penalise an offside player if they do not have the ball, tell them where they should be. Don’t wait for the players to wrestle to get the ball. Don’ts
