High Legh Play Area – Questionnaire

High Legh Play Area – Questionnaire
Due to the removal of a significant amount of play equipment from High Legh
Play Area, Macclesfield Borough Council would like to take this opportunity to
relocate the play area.
There are a number of reasons for this, including health and safety issues and
compliance to new legislation.
Following a meeting with Cllr Claire Hay, MBC would like to address the
issues and concerns raised and would ask that you consider all the
information before you fill in the following questionnaire.
When the play area was originally installed, priorities and considerations
differed to today’s standards. We now have a responsibility to take new
standards and legislation into account when providing play facilities. In
accordance with current health and safety standards, there is a particular
emphasis on the play area being overlooked by neighbouring properties. This
is to ensure that as many people can see the children as possible. We are all
aware of the problems faced by children as vulnerable members of the
community, therefore, making them visible makes them safer. Open space
also significantly reduces the risk of anti-social behaviour such as vandalism
and intimidation and bullying.
MBC proposes relocating the play area to the area of land directly to the side
of its current location. This land is much more open and visible and is still near
to the geographical centre of High Legh.
If the play area were to be moved, the current play area would still be used for
leisure purposes and possibly developed into a woodland area, perhaps
incorporating a picnic area.
Macclesfield Borough Council aims to make all new developments as
accessible and inclusive as possible. This means taking into account the
needs of all those who are at risk of exclusion. This could be disabled children
or parents/carers, ethnic minorities, families on low incomes, or those at risk
of being bullied. In effect, it is about making all members of the community as
welcome and as secure as possible. Areas for consideration include, the
location of the site, access to and from the site, access route around the play
equipment, accessibility of the equipment itself, seating, signage, distance,
and surfacing.
