Students with Chronic Problems A “chronic kid” is the student who will not stop doing what s/he does to get in trouble When identifying students with chronic behavior, severity of behavior has less impact than frequency of behavior Students with Chronic Problems are Missing These Skills The cannot experience an uncomfortable feeling without getting in trouble. The cannot be OK if someone around them is not OK. They cannot do something when they don’t want to. What Students Need to Change GRACE ◦ Adult Accepts Students: You Your problems Your pain Your need ACCOUNTABILITY ◦ Student Accepts Responsibility I did it I’m sorry It is part of a problem in my life I accept consequences I accept and need help What we provide student to achieve accountability: Time Relationship Questions Teaching Teaching a new skill set to manage differently. ◦ Being angry or upset and not getting in trouble. ◦ Being okay when others are not okay. ◦ Being able to follow directions even when I don’t want to or it is hard. Practicing to create rote muscle memory. Protecting Changing the environment. Restrictions based on what the student can’t manage. Used to stop the acting out. Providing What Students Need 4 STEPS ◦ Early Intervention (When) ◦ Caring Confrontation (How) ◦ Protective Plan (What) ◦ Outlast the Acting Out Outlasting—creating change for life!
