A settlement on today's location was founded in 3rd century BC by the Celts who named it the White City. It was permanently settled by Serbs from the 7th century onwards. In 1521 Belgrade was conquered by the Ottomans and became the principal city of Ottoman Europe. The status of Serbian capital was regained only in 1841, after the Serbian revolution. The teachers and associates of the University of Belgrade represent the largest part of the scientific potential of the Republic of Serbia. Apart from research projects, with the objective to improve the system of education and to modernize educational process, the University personnel carries out a considerable number of projects from the republic Programme of Scientific Research and the Programme of Technological Development, and takes part in their realization.
