Causes :
Fight in an overcrowded prison
The fire broke out after a fight between rival gangs, who
set mattresses on fire

Arson
The conditions of the prison system are absolutely
inhumane
Consequences:
Killed 81 prisoners, and 14 suffered
threatening burns, and seven suffered minor wounds

60 inmates were immediately evacuated and that, when
the firefighters were in place, the fire was quickly brought
under control
Firefighters found knives and homemade alcohol at the
site
Consequences:
The fire began in the early morning hours and quickly
spread
The 20 guards present, only five or six guards were inside
the prison at the time of the fire
Some prisoners waving their hands through the bars of the
jail as relatives screamed at security forces to allow them in to
help
Chile’s prison system is more than 70 percent over capacity
