The strategic Learner - Madison City Schools

The Strategic Learner
“The Strategic Teacher is the one who
grows the Strategic Learner. Without us,
the student's capability will wilt and die .”

Using Instructional Strategies to Engage Learners
2.5 - Engages learners in developing and monitoring
goals for their own learning and behavior. (The Strategic
Learner)
Growing The Self-Directed Strategic Learner
“A highly self-directed learner, based on the survey results, is
one who exhibits initiative, independence, and persistence in
learning; one who accepts responsibility for his or her own
learning and views problems as challenges, not obstacles; one
who is capable of self-discipline and has a high degree of
curiosity; one who has a strong desire to learn or change and is
self-confident; one who is able to use basic study skills, organize
his or her time and set an appropriate pace for learning, and to
develop a plan for completing work; one who enjoys learning
and has a tendency to be goal-oriented.” (Guglielmino, 1977/78,
p.73)
Give one, Get one
• Reflect on your practice.
• On the back of the half sheet of paper, write down 3-5
strategies you use in your classroom.
• Find a “thinking” partner to give a strategy to and get a
strategy from.
• Discuss the strategies you got from each other as well
as your successes or struggles with these strategies.
• Working with your thinking partner, discuss how the
strategy makes the students strategic.
Why Reflect Over Lesson Planning?
“The goal of reflection is not necessarily to
address a specific problem or question
defined at the outset, but to observe and
refine practice in general on an ongoing
basis.”
M. C. Florez, Reflective Practice, 2001
Strategic Lesson Planning Guide

Strategic Lesson Planning Guiding Statements and Questions
Step 1
Plan/Determine the Learning Targets
Decide what it is the students will be able to do today as a
result of this lesson.
Ensure that the learning target of the lesson moves the
students closer to mastery of content standards.
Decide on formative assessment(s) that will be used to
determine if learning target has been met.
Step 2
Reflection of Before, During & After
Think about the strategy and purpose(s) of each part of the
lesson.
Is it connected and related to the learning target?
How is the strategy guiding the student to be a strategic
learner?
Step 3
Plan for Assessment of Learning Target
How will the learning target be formatively assessed?
Consider:
Work products
Separate assessments
Exit slips
Observational data
Self-assessments

Reflection
"Reciprocity is the belief that each learning interaction is an
opportunity for everyone to learn - an embodiment of the
saying, 'When one teaches, two learn.' When we look at
everyone else as a learner and a teacher, regardless of their
credentials or years of experience, we're often delightfully
surprised by new ideas, concepts, strategies, and passions.
If we go into an experience expecting to learn, much more
often than not, we will.“
