I would like to extend a very warm welcome
and the very best of luck to everyone
participating in Aberdeen’s Golden Games
2012.
The Golden Games are part of Aberdeen
City Council and at NHS Grampian’s
commitment to reshaping care for older
people in Aberdeen.
Life expectancy has been growing steadily
across the country with many people living
longer and healthier lives. Additionally our
attitude towards older people must change.
An increasingly older population provides
an opportunity to make the most of older
people’s contributions to the community.
The Golden Games 2012 are about being
physically active and encouraging residents
to continue participating in social,
economic, cultural and civic affairs. Older
people can remain active contributors to
their families, peers and communities and
active ageing aims to extend healthy life
expectancy and quality of life for all people
as they age.
The Golden Games presents a fantastic
opportunity for participants to try something
new, revisit a former favourite past-time,
get involved and experience the lasting
benefit of taking part.
I hope that you enjoy taking part in the
Golden Games 2012.
In recognition of this we have devised a
packed programme of events to promote
active ageing and highlight the diverse
number of activities available and suitable
for people aged over 65 in the city.
Whether using specially designed gym
equipment in the city’s care homes or taking
part in tennis, Zumba or health walks the
entire programme of events will highlight
the importance of remaining active as we
grow older.
The timetable has been put together to
promote activities which will help to
combat age discrimination, overcome
age-related stereotypes and remove
barriers for continuing to take part in a
range of activities across the city.
I was delighted to learn of the Golden
Games programme taking place in the City
this summer. With the Olympics just around
the corner the country will be buzzing with
activity and regardless of age or ability I am
sure this fine City will be caught up in
Olympic fever.
In my line of work there is no stigma
attached to age. You only have to look at
my esteemed colleague Alex Ferguson to
realise that age is no barrier to efficiency.
Many people marvel at his remarkable
achievements in football but very rarely
question his age. I am often referred to in
the local media as an elder statesman in
terms of my experience in the game but I
never question my age.
Being a football manager is not a 9 to 5 job.
You are on the training pitch most days
working closely with young professional
players and it is working with these
enthusiastic youngsters, at the peak of their
careers, which helps to keep you youthful.
Director of Social Care and Wellbeing

It is a privilege to work at Aberdeen FC and
having been in the City for over a year now
I can account firsthand the importance of
sport to the North East people. The
forthcoming Golden Games are a fine
example of the efforts being made to
demonstrate that age really is just a
number and not an obstacle in leading a fit
and healthy lifestyle.
