TENNIS IN KEY STAGE 3
The aim of the Key Stage 3 tennis course is as follows:
1)
To increase the pupils knowledge of and ability to perform some of the basic skills of the game of
tennis.
2)
Develop an understanding of the rules, scoring tactics and etiquette of the singles game.
3)
Improve the consistency of groundstrokes.
4)
Develop techniques in the serve and volley.
5)
Develop an understanding of the rules, scoring, tactics and etiquette of the doubles game and
singles game.
6)
Improve tennis related fitness.
7)
Devise games and competitions to aid learning.
In years 7, 8 & 9 the minimum time spent on tennis is 6 weeks. The general programme of study
contains 12 weeks of lessons and it is hoped that all this subject matter will be covered, although the
amount of time spent on each skill may vary. The programme of tennis is detailed in it's skill
development because this may well be the first experience the pupils have had of tennis.
The main programme of study highlights the major tennis skills that will be covered during key stage
three and dependant on the progress made and the ability of each group. Further skills will also be
worked on such as:
a)
Short Tennis will be used as an introduction and practice for full court tennis.
b)
Use of more detailed practices requiring quick thinking, planning and organisation.
c)
Emphasis on groundstroke rallying, the use of linking shots.
d)
Introduction of the lob and the overhead smash.
e)
Pupil devised games and practises for all abilities.
f)
Game tactics in singles and doubles.
